no that's it Legion thought I'd just finally reveal it and be done with it. BTW mate when you head up north on your annual trip do you stay in the bush, fully self sufficient? or do you perhaps take advantage of some of the facilities on offer? Either way if it wasn't for a station owner or local govt none of us would have the opportunities we have up there. I'm sure someone benefits from your visit up there apart from you.
WA has SO many secret spots like trigg point, scarbs manning st, mettams, smot, mullas, Margaret's, ocean beach, nth n Sth point, wedge ledge geeeeeeeeeezus but we keep em under wraps not like bells goldy Lennox Phillip is noosa etc if you live in a city or in a town it's pretty much assured blokes know your "secrets"
This topic reminds me of all the fisherman i talk to. They will have a Fishing spot in the ocean. Often when they arrive they get all upset because someone else is fishing on their spot
While I respect that some locals want to keep their spot low key ( yes they know that some others in the world know it exists) to me that is not the main point which is retaining an element of mystery and adventure in our pastime.
Who of us can't remember the anticipation of going on the " search" planing a trip based on a rumour? jeeze rip curl made a fortune tapping into this aspect of surfing.
Every time a spot is promoted a little bit of the mystery is gone. I don't think I am being selfish by being quiet about spots I know but giving others the opportunity to discover them for themselves.
Surf photos posted on the web that expose places and times are like seeing your future girlfriend on a porn site. All I am hoping for is that we consider leaving their bathing suit on
bakesy what gives u the right to decide for the other locals, the waves already has an annoyingly small take zone anyway.
can't believe yr attitude, you would make a good missus, always correct never guilty
I am assuming, that all the over protective 'locals' on here have never traveled to a place they have been inspired to visit by viewing photos or watching video of said place?
In the 21st century, we all participate in a very visual surfing culture. Seems to me very hypocritical to happily partake in the parts you like, while rejecting those aspects that you feel negatively impact you.
I agree that treading lightly is the key, and I also think that the over proliferation of images and consequent over exposure results in many surfers who do not tread lightly invading certain areas.
My inverted commas about locals was aimed more at the metro surfers who complain about overexposure of obvious spots right in the middle of the city, rather than the true locals living in more remote areas, that have put years of time and local knowledge into understanding their area.
I have certainly been guilty of being a grump from time to time when a bunch of unfamiliar faces descend enmass to the break i've been surfing regularly for many years.
I also agree with agent000 about the mystery being lost when spots are published in detail. I am not particularly enamoured with the idea of the 'here it is everyone come and get it' type mentality. I think there is still a place for sharing the stoke of the great waves you have scored on a great trip in lesser exposed areas through video in the public realm though - Just don't publish the exact location - In this case, I imagine only those who have surfed the spot in question would have recognised it. If not you would have to do your research to find it. This probably filters out a lot of potential blow-ins.
These days we have facebook etc, info regarding surf spots is every where!! Wanna surf dot com is one staight off the bat. How do you combat that??
You dont, thats how. And winging on a public forum isnt going to help.
I have my own secret spots that I wouldnt say where on here but I do tell my friends. I never say dont tell anyone as I have surfed these spots for years and havnt seen anyone I know there. In fact I have surfed it mainly by my self or with one or two others. They are pricks of places to get to and if you get into trouble its a long way to anywhere for help. That said they are cracking waves.
Anyhoo, Ocean Beach isnt a secret and neither is.......................
^^^^
Ocean beach isn't secret, but the fact that it gets that good is. Most people (like me) have probably only seen it in summer when it's a long close out.
It doesn't worry me the footage that was on here, but I would be pretty narked if I was a local that had to wait all year for it to turn on, only to have it over run by perth surfers so keen to stimulate the local economy.
Too funny. Doggie I agree with you. Goodvibes crust and legion,I suppose you all shook your fists in anger when Elvis started gyrating his hips. Legion I'm more shocked at you,as seem like the most likely person who would and could adapt to the New generation we live in.
As to the mystique, that is also laughable,as someone else posted, vids like the search quenched our desire to search.
Also for what seems like such a fickle spot you would have buckleys to.score it anyway.
Forecasters said dead flat here yesterday,I scored nice head high bowls with one mate on the gold Coast. Why because I know when it will work and what banks are around. Can't post a pic for some reason.
There's another right point somewhere that would work in similar conditions. Probably would have been smokin that day as well.
That they should want a K'Rudd style stimulous package to their community as a consequence of more crowds to a wave with a jakes style take off zone.
ok then, I will not ever post another pic/vid of that spot. I will also remove all vids from youtube but I hope the red/green thumbers and those who respectfully took the time to present valid arguments stop using the net to suss out conditions or find spots. Try going back to a time when all you had was a synoptic chart in the west and a network of mates that live in places 100's of kms from your home. We should also ban the surf report thread and the radio stations that air daily surf reports, in fact this very site should become a no go for those that want to limit exposure.
Haha Bakesy, you're getting thrown to the wolves worse than a Rupert Murdoch media driven vendetta against K-Rudd
Screw surfing, I'm gonna take up chess instead. Keep my brain fresh, no need to deal with kooks, drop-ins and crowds or over protective locals. And if I lose a piece I don't need to spend hundreds of dollars for me to be still in the game. I don't need to spend hours checking the forecast for conditions to be right. All I'll have to do is grab a beer, sit down and start playing!
On a serious note though, the locals that I've met on my trips even down there have been great. They love a chat and can easily single you and your mates out as metro lads down for the weekend and let a few waves go for yas. Have not seen or dealt with any aggro about guys crowding up a certain spot. The only time was from the older local crew when one dropped in on another and the ensuing water fight with was quite amusing for blokes in their 60's. As such it all just boils down to respect. If we rock up to a foreign line up, no way are we going to paddle to the take off like tough sh** as if we own the place. Posting photo's on the net? Sure the few thousand that frequent this site might have a read or watch but really out of all those who really are going to put the effort into travelling down to these 'secret spots'? Furthermore those that do generally know what they are doing and don't cause trouble so why what are we worrying about? When push comes to shove, the local will always score the waves because of local knowledge while the blow-in gets dragged out by the rip or takes off too late.
This is becoming thread is becoming worse than a highschool 'he slept with, she slept with-' secret. We all know about said spots but it's the verbally proclamation of it that is drawing ire from all...
