Just spent some time with a local shaper today talking about boards in general. We then got onto old boards, as he had a few round the factory. I love my old single fin Cordingley, although I've never ridden it. I'm looking into the possibility of having it copied using todays materials, as I don't want to damage this board. It was made between 74-77 a Greg Lawrenson beauty and it's older than me.

I considered a treehouse stand up paddle board - they look beautiful, but I settled for a Stonker made closer to where I live in Torquay. You got to love the natural wood finish.

Nah, just a glassing room. I can get shortboards machine cut for $50, sooo much easier, cleaner and faster (takes 'em 20 min to cut down a blank, and me 20 min of hand sanding). I know it's not traditional but it cuts 1 or 2 days off the build, plus I don't have the patience to hand shape a board or ruining a blank .

Is that how you did your last board?
& your kite board the carbon fiber one, is that a stringerless EPS core? Thinkin of makin one sorta the same but for surf, what are your thoughts?

There both done that way (the kiteboard was a free blank from a shaper as the EPS didn't expand right), the kiteboard is stringerless EPS with 400gms of carbon on each side (100 @ 0°,90°,45°,-45°) you wouldn't need that much cloth for a standard surfboard though. The surfboard is blue foam with a standard ply stringer and 400gms on the top and 200 on the bottom.

If you've seen any of the fibre flex boards there stringerless EPS with carbon unis down the rail. You can also get EPS with parabolic stringers (that's for the next one) there just 1/8" ply 1.5-2 inches in from the rail (you can even get the rail foam in a different color, uber cool).

Can't really give you a good idea about it because I haven't had the chance to ride the kiteboard yet (that and I'm a mad scientist and my work isn't gospel). I'd think that if you ran the same in carbon as you would glass it might be a bit stiff but that could make up for not having the stringer. Pco might have some better thoughts on it if you ask him nicely.

As might Dave from Treehouse. As far as I am aware, he glues up his own blanks from blue EPS.

The problem you might have is getting a slab of EPS thick enough to get the rocker you need for a board. Because it is extruded, it comes in a flat slab without the built in rocker you get in a blown blank.

You can use the shapers stuff ( www.shapers.com.au , they computer shape for you as well if you want) but it's less expensive to glue up your own. Found a place to buy blocks a while ago but I'm not sure if I kept the link, just need to run a hot wire through'em to cut the rocker in.

Thanks DL, I was in @ Colin Earles the other day and he had stringerless eps(i think they were) blanks and they looked the goods, didnt have time to talk to him about it tho.

I can't get them out of the bags with 1 arm, I've only got 5 boards (missus has a couple as well). Though I've got a Single Fin (was going to go green rails with gold pins ) and a SUP on the list.

Figure (did the math) if I pay my self a dollar every time I do my shoulder rehab exersices it'll pay for the board (single fin) in 3-4 months and I can't surf before than anyways.

The SUP, yeah I know but when there's no surf (or very little) on the northern beaches is the freaking war of the SUP. I'll probably do that one my self, need to redown load the shaping softwear though.

Speeking of carbon boards have a look at these www.avisosurf.com

Sweet. Make sure you put up a pic when it's done.
I surfed with Dave in MR and he was on one of his singles. Looked fun. I got a photo from the water. I'll try and find it...

Here are a couple of picks of the finished boards and proud owner.

This is a mal with artwork to match a tattoo.

A copy of a Brazilian board that was falling apart under the owners feet.

Oh and a 10'3" SUP.

Hey Doggie,

Here's Dave riding one of his boards in MR.

Turns out I don't have a pic of him on his single, this is him trying out Jemma's brand new 7 foot quad egg.

When is yours due?
