Bronzy's will scare ya but they won't eat ya...

if scaring you mean tearing limbs from you, well then yes you are correct....otherwise im sitting here giving myself a facepalm

Im not sure how i feel about Bronzies either. I feel more comfortable with Tigers from all my research.

Bronzes have been implicated in at least a few attacks. First was Brad Smith (I think that was the one with two sharks one said to be a Bronzie) and the second was Esperance with Sean Pollard. Yes the offical report is Great Whites but it was originally called for Bronzies. I think a 2.5 mtr one would scare the absolute crap out of me.. Mind you a big seal will often see me bolting to the beach..

they have been the killer a few times over here and have done some damage....

bronzies are the red headed bloke who has had one too many drinks at the pub....unpredictable chaos

I was hoping someone in here may have an idea..

It's just that time of year, not to mention arguably the best salmon season we've ever had. The one I filmed at smot would've been maybe 7ft and I would've had no qualms whatsoever paddling out. It didn't seem aggro or hyped up, its' body language was quite relaxed. There's been others around the same size I've seen surfing, diving or fishing that I've wanted no part of whatsoever. Sometimes they act like a Lab, sometimes they act like a Heeler.
I wonder if there's heaps of crays in close along that stretch at present? That would explain why they're cruising through there and not the beachies. The one I was watching was certainly hunting in close under ledges. If you want to find out go for a swim out the back and crinkle a placcy water bottle underwater for a couple of minutes.

I agree with you JB, it is difficult to tell how big they are in the water tho.

There are a lot of them around now, inshore and offshore. A solid one shadowed me at Trigg last week and a smaller one again this week.

Bronzies appeared to be the norm in the north west when i surfed there quite a few years ago!
First surf i remember quite vividly as a decent size one cruised through the approaching set !
Being an East coast nancy boy blow-in i was more than a bit worried.......
No-one else in the lineup appeared to be even remotely concerned ,even referring to them as "my mate Barry"
or "Fock it's Fonzie" ....
The tinny boys would return from a days fishing and feed the frames of tuna and macks to them from the shelf
well inside the point ..even to the extent of wrestling with them from tail end of the frame while standing on the shelf
The bronzie hole was around half way out to the point apparently
Got used to seeing them cruising past and they appeared to be totally disinterested ....
but never felt comfortable..and i sure as sh8t wasn't the last one out for the late session

Razz thats the point i made. The report of a 3.5 mtr was in reality just a 2 and a bit meter bronzy..

Also a point about drum lines. I was told during the drum lines deployment in Mindarie, that all local beaches will be automatically closed whilst the drum lines were in the water. SO be careful what you wish for.

If it is only a 2 metre bronzy cool no dramas, but there has been at least eleventy -eight million sightings between mettams and trigg of a 3 metre shark, I know people get excited about stuff, but deploy the drum lines catch him and if it is only a 2 metre shark take him out a few miles or down the coast and let him go, he may have a new found respect for humans before he gets to three metres, in the other scenario if it is a 3-4 metre specimen job done....... I know I know yeah yeah we all surf the northwest and theres millions of bronzies, but they eat pretty good up there, you catch mackies off the beach and the food up there is thick, its a bustling ecosystem..... Down in perth have you ever tried catching a size jewie or pinky within three miles of north beach to trigg............... (yes we all have one story of one or two good fish caught there but compare that to up north)

Razz all the reports have been of between 2 to 2.5 mtr Bronzie. Two seperate reports said it was a 3.5 mtr shark. The first time reported, other surfers were in the water and reported not seeing anything that size. Videos confirming 2 to 2.5 m bronzes have been provided. Even Smicko shared his own above. I think in total I've seen 3 or 4 different videos from different days and all small sharks.

The second report of a 3.5 mtr shark was followed less than 20 minutes later by another report from a different source saying it was a small bronzie again. From that id suggest that the two people who reported 3.5 m estimated wrong.

If you read back you'll see fisheries were driving around with drum lines on their boat, but they found no sharks of concern..

Originally i thought it may have been people reporting sharks, to keep numbers down, but i don't believe that was the case..

doggie, here's a statement:

"Today again the alarm was sent in. Firstly for a 3.5 mtr shark and then 20 minutes later for another 2.3 mtr at the same spot. I think the second one was just people underestimating and i would say it proves they do."

That statement is equally as valid as bj's. Both are ridiculous.

You should tell them you've got proof.

Oh, and the app says 39 min, not 20 min.

You've got no idea about the issue. You simply want to have a dig at me and thats fine. Start a fan page..

The question was raised as to WHY is this happening, some people are genuinely interested in trying to find answers. But you simply once again just want to carry on with your passionate crusade..

Its a shame because its people like you, that stifle conversation that may help

Yet to see the pictures, but just because one may have been 3 mtr today, means nothing of the previous days.

Exaggerate, id say they simply just get it wrong..

They are still there and stop in for a chat occassionally.

Some them can be a bit flighty too. I scared one off a wave he had already claimed a few years ago. He saw me paddling hard and high tailed it. I felt bad I had hassled him so badly.

I don't agree with that. I think they have their place and i guess you just need to take the advice/alert with advisement. Most of the recent reports have included photos and videos even so i trust what has been reported.

The reports are normally provided even with a name for who reported it. Id prefer to see more info from Fisheries about the tagged sharks and their detections. Like what size, and even ID so we can use that info to our advantage.
