27th June 2015 I was searching the beach between Jl. Segara & Ramada Bintang for a boat to take me to airport rights. The ocean between the airport all the way to the front of Discovery was whitewater. There was even a bombie breaking out in what one local called gods waves a few k's out the back of Midway Kuta. I watched the G'land boat head off & get smashed by a wave as high as the boat in the Kuta reef channel, then remembered I had a waterproof camera in a bumbag & filmed it get smashed by a second wave. I didn't realize it then but the front windscreen of the boat was smashed & injured people. The boat turned back & took them to hospital.
After 45 mins begging & with the financial incentive of another couple of blokes throwing in $20 each along with me we got a ride to AR's thinking sweet we're gonna have it to ourselves. But some people had gone over to Jimbaran bay & got a ride from there, I didn't think of that damnit. Still it wasn't packed & it wasn't that great with an early fairly strong tradewind. Got some good size 2.5 to 3 times overhead screamers (about 18 foot face). Then stopped on the inside shoulder to get some footage of a set coming. But it broke really wide & I realized I was gonna get smashed if I didn't make a move. I managed to scrape under these waves just in time & pulled out my 5m waterproof camera I'd had for years only to find the water pressure had killed it.
Meanwhile the pro's & semi pro's were at Padang Padang getting bazzed & the hellmen were at Ulu's.
Bizarre watching this below average day at Gland via remote copter camera when I'm 1/2 way through Phil Jarratt's Bali Heaven & Hell book talking about the early days. We really need to discover a new planet with consistent epic surf, coz the world is getting way too small.

Kids are so spoilt these days, internet surf vids, dads pushing them into waves & tropical surf trips. I was lucky if I got a lift down to the beach
