Just picked up an 04 petrol (shock horror gasp) soccer mum car (Prado) with service history for pretty cheap. If you're willing to go petrol you can get some good bargains but do your research as some motors far outperform others. Will let you know how it goes as it's my first petrol in 10 years.
I've been talked out of going 2nd hand diesel (with exception to the 1HD-FTE motor but it was out of my price range if I wanted anything under 450000 kms) by two of my LV mechanic mates now. Modern diesel repair and maitenence costs are substationally more than petrol nowadays (and diesel fuel not even cheap anymore either) so make sure if you go diesel it has a thourough log book history and throw a secondary fuel filter and catch can on it straight away. Just google injector replacements in any aus car forum and it will give you goosebumps!
If it's the 4.0 V6 you can't go wrong, great motor.
That's the one
the 3.4L in the 90 series seemed to be regularly doing 400k kms without breaking a sweat too if serviced regularly. There was one for sale fully kitted out for touring down Esperance way for $8k with 200k kms in mint condition a few weeks back. Bargain!
Yea plenty of petrols around at the moment. Everyone wants diesels, not sure why.
Because they cost so much more to service, at more regular intervals, and if you do a fuel pump or such you're up for thousands not just a coupla hunj. Sheesh! Why wouldn't you want a diesel?
Price up a turbo and the hipressure fuel pump on any diesel. Ive never replaced a fuel pump in any car Ive had unless it was for performance.
Ill stick to petrols thanks, you can have the diesels.
Plus I do my own services and get filters (gen) very cheap
Also particulate filters on the later stuff can run into $$$ as well.
I was agreeing with you ya ****en nonce, read it again.
So it seems I miss read your post, unusual that you agree with me so I naturally read it wrong, funny..
I've heard autos go well in the sand, I think I'd probably prefer one. Most important to me is the body is straight with no rust, engine is good with service history and under 200k km I guess.
Also heard the newer ones are all gonna be petrol, I think that was the patrols. Getting a lot of info from all directions. I wouldn't mind a petrol model, like someone said diesel is not so cheap anymore.
My old man used to say petrols the least cost associated with a car. With the rego rippoff these days, I'd say he's even more right. Mines almost doubled for my car in 5 years.
Im glad I got an auto, makes life a lot easier.

Now I'm only speaking about Toyota's here because that's all I looked at getting for 4 months (with a brief look at the d-max Ute but was a little out of my $20k budget with the model I wanted.)
With what you've said above and with a budget of $15-25k forget about the diesel cruisers. Either go the V8 cruiser 100 series (no gas conversion) or a late model 120 series petrol Prado (you should be able to find one tricked out with a budget of $20-25k).
Cheapest 1hd-fte (totally missle proof btw) I could find under 300k km was for $28k at an auction and from my research the 6 cylinder diesel and petrols weren't for me (6 cyl petrols had high running costs and lowish power/weight ratio and diesels high maitenence $$).
If you choose to go a diesel Prado don't get a GX model unless it's got full service history or you are a vehicle mechanic as most of these cars are ex-mine (you can get bargains with ex mine but you are rolling the dice).
I ended up under budget on mine with an older Prado with a few light scratches and dents but with service history and no signs of fluid leaks or undercarriage rust so I jumped at it. If you find a good 1hd-fte though don't hesitate, those things basically increase in value with time.
BTW, make sure you do some research regarding V8 100 series fuel consumption. It's the only negative thing I could find about it. I was ok with it but I don't do a daily commute.
Diesel service costs for me are about $100. 20L drums of the right oil are (just) less than $100 and you almost get two fills for that and a genuine OEM oil filter is $42. Air and fuel as required. Grease is almost nothing. Sure, bigger things cost lots (like injection system) but they aren't regular. I do the oil every 5-7k but it's supposed to be 10k. Takes a lazy intermittent couple of hours.
I have both a solid axle manual cruiser and an ifs auto 100 series and i can tell you a long trip is much more pleasant in the auto ifs.The solid axle manual seems to cope in the rough stuff better but driving on the beach the auto is better. So if you dont want to be exhausted from the drive before you get to surf get an auto with ifs.
Looks tidy for its age, I like those slide out draws. They're really handy I have them in my xtrail. The cars 2001 & has done 340k km
So....
Your x trail is aids tested...?
If you own an x trail
You really should get yourself aids tested
Also....
If you don't do your own servicing.... regardless make or model
You should get yourself aids tested
lol.....the xtrail has been good. I'm only swapping it for a bigger car coz I plan to visit certain places a little more often...and not gay bars or some sh1t like that u trolling carnt

Yep could be the go, considering patrols and prados now. Landys might be a bit too big for our garage. We ordered a 2019 Suzuki Vitara for the missus the other day to replace her corolla, so have a little less room lol
Fuel, fuel, fuel.
Had a 2008 GU Patrol, good rig but expensive to run 16l/100. Traded it in for a Dmax which does 8l/100. All in all my weekly fuel bill dropped by $100 per week which pays for the car loan.
Plus the Dmax goes more places than the patrol. Power to weight makes a huge difference in the sand.
+ 1 for a MUX under 25k, you'll save in the long run.

Yep the X trail isn't Bogan enough for these parts
I have had a 2011 challenger since new. It has done 120k. It is a great all rounder and great on the open road. I will admit to being winched out once by a new cruiser after pushing it too far. Economy is 11/100. The interior is quite long. I put a 8'6 sup in there. You would pick up a good one for under 25. Obviously don't buy any common rail over 70 k odo unless you see the receipt for timing chain kit being swapped out.or if you do get it done ASAP.

I went to cairns once.....
Never seen so many x trails
Never met so many bogans....
It's like the perth of qld

Need to be clear here Micks X trail is special, it has more surfboards in it that any board shop in WA ready for at any and for every surf condition.
In fact it has so many boards its a bit like the Tardis bigger on the inside than it looks from the out side.....serious.
It how ever has a few issues one never starts before 7.30 am any morning certainly not a dawn patrol vehicle only knows how to park reversed but has spent more time at the beach than any other vehicle I know
Nissan / Patrol never going to be as good
On ya Mick
