I'm confused. Does the foil fit into a standard tuttle box, in which case I have an old board, or is it a deep tuttle but needing a spacer?
It goes in a deep tuttle, but needs a spacer (no deep tuttle fin actually fills the gap entirely)
The model we are talking about is a Manta2, can also be ordered with a standard tuttle strut (?)
But you could still use a deep strut in standard box, seen it done here. At least you don't need a spacer then !!
As in the photos, you could call the foil a medium tuttle (?) and once fitted with the spacer it's quite taller than a deep tuttle.
So there's still plenty of room for the foil to come up in a deep tuttle box if not blocked
Hi Sputnik11,
In the same boat. My AHD SL2 132 will need a spacer like Sean Hogan hasd drawn, otherwise I could end up splitting the box, not what I want. Hence, have a need for a board repair and will have a spacer made at the same time. Rather have the kit right day one than damage to a good board and possibly losing a foil.
pretty stoked yesterday, second session on the foil :
6.5 no cam
128 patrik sl
7/8 knots max
got it going with a little pumping ! How awesome is that stuff ! Less scary than the first time and managed to keep it flying for a 100 m.
And most importantly : no crash !!
can't wait to get it back on the water
If this spacer thing works......then no need for many to buy a foil board.
That should double or triple its popularity.
I'm thinking of buying a foil to go with my 75 cm wide Manta and my 7m Maui TXi.
Hoping I can get going in 6-7 knots.
I was in Noumea last week but the wind wasn't (and I still want to go back anyway I liked it so much). I was right where Sean's avatar pic is I think and was just floating around on underpowered gear just to get wet. There where a few guys out on 8m+ sails going well.
And then this windsurfer rises out of the water and sails by me completely silent. I let out a "whoa". It looks fully tech man. I want one. It was slalom board with the foil.
Are the foiling kites faster or not? They look faster, like they look really, really fast, but then they don't look to be actually pulling away from a planing windsurfer. Which is faster in 8 knots?
Bugger Panda we didn't even catch up !!!!
Should've sent me a message !
The guy you saw is benjamin tillier, pryde/taroa developer.
Kitefoils are definitely faster than us !be in 8 knots or 20, only above 20 can we see them struggle in the chop while we skim over it.
For example locally the best kitefoiler here does 34 knts Vmax in 12 knts but also 34 knts Vmax in 20 knts....
Looks like it for me with 30mm to 20mm spacer following the line of the deck and deep tuttle box fin. Will post pics when done. Get on it Sputnik11, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
You'll have to make your own, if you're not too much in a hurry I got a mate to make some cnc machined ones in commacel.
Will be able to post it to you if you want one.
I'm sure most boards available at moment were not designed with foiling in mind. And with normal fins the gap is no issue.
It will be interesting to see what board manufacturers and designers come up with and how quick.
with all this discussion about spacers, etc ...
1) should we be asking for a DEEP tuttle instead ??
2) should be using spacers for tuttle in deep tuttle box for our windsurf fins - not heard of issues to date, but MUCH less stress than long foil ...
and yes, i had heard there are speed limitations on foils - that is why i am so curious when i hear someone was trying to do speed windsurfing on one !!!
Sailed today in 8-14 knots,averaging 10 knots with a 7.5m / 115 / 44 fin.
Not much fun, though I did get going around a quarter of the time.
Two hydrofoil kitesurfers were out never off the plane, one of them looked fully powered up sailing all over the river.
Thinking a lighter sail and rig is more important with a hydrofoil as it gets its power mostly from fin lift.
