It's unwise to pay too much. But it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It cannot be done.If you deal with the lowest bidder, then it is well to add something for the risk you run.And if you do that, then you will have enough to pay for something better. There is hardly anything in the world that someone can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper --and people who consider price alone are this man's lawful prey.

Go with the Moses

Moses is the one brand that you do see any negative posts about there foils.

Mario, my recommendation would be to go for the Starboard Freeride over the Starboard GT. The Freeride will allow you to foil in slightly less wind and offer a tad more stability. I have used both and both are great easy to use and learn on options, and based on our current needs the Freeride looks to be the slightly better choice. While the 75cm mast is fine, ask your shop if they can upgrade you to the 85 or even 95cm alloy mast. Not the end of the world if they can't.

Hi IWB

Thanks for the reply and help.
I think you are on spot, i think the freeride foil is the one for me as i dont want to race or go fast, just want to cruise on the days below 15 knots

Cheers

Hi Mario,
No problem. The nice part is that should you ever want to upgrade to one of the more performance oriented foils from starboard you can order the wings or fuselage or mast separately. The Freeride foil surprisingly has some nice top speed if you decide to go fast. I haven't tried yet but thinking what could work nicely on the freeride, is putting the 95 fuselage on to gain even more lightwind performance, stability and upwind angles than when using the stock 75cm fuselage.
Again don't be put off by the "race" foils (should you ever decide to go that route) as they too in some areas can be used for cruising and slower speed and with the right setup are very forgiving. For ultra light wind my first choice I use in many cases is the Starboard race foil with the 1000 front wing, 115 fuselage and 255 tailwing/stab. This is a very stable setup and capable of cruising a lower speeds. A setup like this I can foil in even lighter winds and point higher than the freeride. I mainly use a 7m but sometimes bring out the 8m if ultralight. Best of luck out there foiling.

I'm an F-One teamrider, and have to say there's more brands which are really really good. Both the 2020 F-One Carbon Hybrid and Horue foils are also freestyle proof and warranty covers jumping. To me that is the only real metric, since most brands don't allow jumping with their products to fall within warranty. I know Balz has broken a couple Moses wings, they're not unfallable. No brand is.

Moses is a very fine brand, Starboard is too, I know a lot of happy Starboard customers. Just because you've had a bad experience, in my book it doesn't mean you can frame other brands openly negatively like that. The windsurfing world is small, the market even smaller. Negativity without explanation can be really bad for a brandS' name.

As teamrider for a big brand I try to keep my replies as uncoloured as I can (although same as everyone I have my preferences of the characteristics of a foil and those characteristics are very well represented in the F-One products, otherwise I wouldn't be riding with them as part of the R&D team). If I provide my opinion on another brands' products I always try to put forth the good and the bad and especially WHY I think a certain product would (not) be suited for them, from my point of view.

I'd like to ask you to try and adjust your tone a little, or at least provide a good reason for your negativity instead of just "they're cheap rubbish, go buy a Moses". Starboard is a really big brand, that sometimes things slip through their quality control is normal, its about how they handle that which counts.

Sorry for the off topic, just see this alot lately and its not necessary.

Agree with above.

I don't understand the negativity - especially as my bet is most foils are not used anywhere near their performance capability or for what they are designed for.

And writing off a brand for minor/perhaps unimportant issues like loose fit wings or weight, while ignoring price differences doesn't make sense.

Sorry to upset the delicate balance of the Seabreeze.

Sorry azymuth but a loose fitting front wing is more then a minor/perhaps unimportant issues.

One thing that seems to be very commonplace is that the foil manufacturers provide excellent support of their products. Same for boards, sails, components, fins, masts, and booms.

Unless a foiler is OBVIOUSLY abusing his/her equipment, it is not difficult to get manufacturer or vendor support to replace products.

Sugar gets a better response than vinegar. Be nice about it.

If a manufacturer or vendor fails to support a product, chalk it up to (an expensive) lesson learned, and change products.
