Before you bag tape or sandbag the div down. As you dont have a heat gun.
Put your board in the kitchen put div in pre heated oven on low WARNING it wont take long to soften!!! You only get 1 shot this way put on leather gloves take out of oven quickly put on board use your hands to bend into shape hold on until div cools and it retains it's new shape.
The Fumes may be toxic and the div may shrink if left too long! or Beg, Borrow, Steal, Hire a heat gun.
Coremat gets quite heavy with all the resin in it
End grain balsa is good weighs 120 - 180 gk/m3
Mike you are letting a few too many secrets go now..... soon somebody here will be able to build a board
Then once you have taken the div out of the oven wack in your ready to bake cake. Then when its ready you can eat it and get smacked off your head from the toxic fumes

A roll of electrical tape and two half-tubes of epoxy later, and the bottom layer of the sandwich is done. I had to have three goes at getting the tension right, it would have been a lot easier if I'd paid more attention to shaping the divinycell properly first. This includes cutting out the edges. The syringes are there to push the middle of the divinycell down into a slight hollow in the board.
Then again, a vacuum bag would have made life easier as well...
I hope the hardest part is done now.
Nebbian nice work on the photo's nice artistic flair there, with the shadow of the lattice work reflecting across your board work. You didn't happen to get too close to the glue did ya huh did ja
Gee I hope you read this next day after the glue high wears off
Mineral
So have you pulled the tape off yet???? (make sure the epoxy is good and hard first!)
That's the moment of tension, (is it all stuck??)
Yep, if it's all stuck ok that's the worst of it, just more glassing, bogging, sanding and painting. Low key and boring.
I was hurrying to get our secret weapon finished for Thursday, because yesterday they forecast a big wind then, but now of course the forecast has dropped back to 15kn.
Mineral: Don't think it was the epoxy, but the contact adhesive I used on the footstrap pads certainly has some interesting side effects
Decrepit: No chance man, what, you think I'll wait less than 24 hours for the glue to cure, to unwrap my masterpiece of construction? Ha ha
Or to slowly realise my lovely Flow might have to play second fiddle to the svelte but full-nosed yellow JP?
Hmmm decisions decisions...

Tomorrow comes the fun part... what shape do I want? Michael Jackson? Diana Ross? George Bush? Or maybe a cute little Drew Barrymore?

I put one layer of 200 gm/sqm over the whole nose, with another ribbon all along the rail. Had to cut the cloth to make it conform to the shape properly, so the top has several overlapping sections.
Is this enough glass, or do I need to put another layer or two on? Bear in mind my tendency to catapult...
I believe this entire thread is an elaborate hoax, including the pictures, Conceived by a person from America.
There is no board...
Hey Grinchy,
I think you need to look at this page:

nebs,
jobs lookin fantastic so far.
almost done.
just a tip. once your board looks like this you know you're done.

Hey Gestalt,
I wish... I'm looking forward to seeing what the latest shape can accomplish though.
Just being watertight would be enough for me
Nebs. it's looking good.
I used to have 1 200gm/m2 on top and bottom, with about 50m overlap. So that's what you have.
Was a bit vulnerable around the nose so I added a layer of 270 gm/m2 carbon/kevlar composite. That fixed it right up!
These days instead of using 1 X 200 gram/m2 I'm vacuuming 2 X 135 gram/m2
Result of all that waffle is add some more glass!! another 2 layers of tape should do it, but off set them a bit so you don't get a thick edge.
Can you account for all the time you have spent on this, Nebbian? Include the search for Diviny cell if you will. I once did a similar repair and have concluded that it isn't worth the effort.
Thanks Decrepit, that helps a lot I'll do another round of glassing tomorrow...
SharkByte: If I was paying myself for the repair then yes it's really not economically feasable, you're much better paying someone else to repair it or buying another second hand board.
But that flow and I go way back, I'm just starting to learn how to ride her fast as well [}:)]

Nebs,
Where are the finished pics? You cant keep us in suspenders like this.
Looks like a job well done.
The next board i'm gonna get will have a round nose. The amount of times I've pogged a hole in my sail with those pointy ones!

Did another round of glassing today, so now the tip of the nose has at least 4 layers of 200 gm/sqm cloth. It looks farken strong, and you know what? It might even be watertight!! (at least until the next catapult)
Nice post Decrepit, that's exactly how I feel...
quote:After I did the big front end job (and did it poorly, I may add), I asked and looked around for other damaged boards to work on. I gave it up as there weren't all that many to be had. They were doing repairs in the local shop, too, so there was competition. There's certainly something odd about a love affair with a piece of foam and epoxy. However, the satisfaction of a job well done, I can understand. By the way, what's with the conspiracy theorists on this forum? Anyway, when it comes to catapults and damage to boards, my search on this brought me to this forum. I dug up some photos of famous people sailing the hawaiian surf in the eighty's, too. In one I saw a mast pad about two feet long and quite thick. Someone also added a caveat to boom bras on another forum stating that one should only purchase the kind that has an integrated mast pad. However, I haven't been able to find one. I'm starting to think that avoiding such extensive repair jobs would be better than doing them. In that way I'm looking for a way to pad my luff sleeve.

Should be ready just in time for the weekend *crosses fingers*
When you have painted it, nebbian, don't forget to include a photo of the complete board. EastofOz, don't take this as an insult, but have you been diagnost Paranoid Schizophrenic, yet? If not, I suggest you find another psychiatrist. Decrepit, let us know which hole you prefer, the vent or the mast track.
