made this video from some clips taken from last summer, its pretty repetitive.. the board is a flare 88 which is one of my favourite boards ever, it has a Isonic rocker and is one of the best shapes in the last ten years.. but I sold it!

You would have to be australias best freestyler. I assume Jaeger Stone's would be at that level and above, but he's a fully sponsered/payed professional.

Jaeger's freestyle is nowhere near that level

His wave sailing is freaking awesome though.

Havnt seen Jaeger sail in years but the only move I can do that I didnt see him do 3 years ago were double spocks, and Id be surprised if he cant pull them off every run anyway.. I saw him land his 1st flaka and took me over 2 years to land one after that... Also I think Simon Hurrey at Severne is an Aus citizen now, and he can do everything I can and more on both tacks, unless he has turned into a overweight WA wave sailor..

Unfortunately I think its more relative to the poor state of affairs of freestyle windsurfing in australia more than anything... there are 12yo dutch kids who can kick my ass and they learn in a semi frozen pond.. whats happening?

Anyone wanna run an Australian freestyle championships?? I reckon I would be the only one to show up and then I can get a sail sponsor

Hey Barn, does SP=Sandy Point?

Also, did it really take you 2 years to learn the flaka?

Cheers!

awesome skillz

i know a certain someone from the capital, while he probably can't match you, I'm almost certain he'd show up at a freestyle comp in Oz and rip it up.

yeah its sandy point, thats not the main speed run though and it only works in an easterly.. thats corner is better for me because I cant do any moves that need flat water on starboard so the main run is pretty useless.. unless I learn everything again on the other tack..

Also the flat water on the inside in a sea breezes are pretty useless for freestyle for me for the same reason..

It took me 2 years to learn to flaka because I was doing it wrong, not because they are hard.. For some reason I decided my way was the correct method and everyone that could already do them was using the wrong method!..

When I used the right method on the other tack I landed my 1st one, so it can take 2 years to learn it yourself, and one day if u use the right method!!! (just like everything)

The method is commitment, I was trying to place the sail exactly right because thats what the good guys do when they have learnt how to do them...

But this just meant I was just slicing the rig forward, and that doesnt work, you have to commit your sail, and your shoulders, hips, head and everything above your waist into the wind..

also before entering the move dont over sheet. Because if you over sheet, you then need to swing the sail around your body to get it into the wind... and this swinging action will stop your body rotating.. for every action bla bla bla..

so the sail rakes back and away from your body before you jump, almost sheeting out.. the sail slices in a straight line, not swung around your body.

and loads of timing.

here is my mate max who I never listened to, notice the sail and commitment into the wind, then the board follows after.. (I also used to try stick the nose in the water and pivot around on it, thats also wrong)

Thanks for the reply Barn, because it highlights something I don't think has been discussed before.

When you watch the best sailors doing forwards, back loops, push loops, vulcans, flakas, grubbys, spocks etc, etc, you are watching a level of sailor you can only aspire to. Their execution of each move is unique to that sailor, as well as their ability to modify/tweak each move, to add their own style, as well as the ability to recover any of these moves.

To my thinking, the watching and imitating of these sailors does not apply to the learning stage, especially for the "weekend sailor" trying to break out of his/her regular comfort zone.

Do you think there are alternative training/learning methods that have yet to be uncovered that will allow the recreational sailor some chance of making these moves, no matter how visually basic the execution appears?

Umm...none of these vids are from Canberra. Either from Sandy Point (south of Melbourne) or Gerroa which is NSW, a few hours south from Sydney.

Although I've never been there, I reckon the footage with sand dunes in the distance are probably Sandy Point.

so Barn, I'm interested in your thoughts; let's say you see a new trick...something you want to try. How would you go about learning it?

Yes I forgot to mention, as well as clips from gerroa and sandy point, there were a 3 clips from the nations capitol... from a secret lagoon at the very end of lake george!.. or maybe that was brasil, cant remember.. (I have a whole video from that location on my vimeo page)

Yes sometimes watching pros nail moves its hard to try to copy them, they are doing so many subtle movements that are impossible to pick up.. Its almost easier to copy someone who has just learnt, good and bad actions are exaggerated and fairly obvious to the laymen..

But that leaves the problem of finding someone who has just learnt the move your trying to master.. You can always find that person at a windy holiday location, but that means going on a windsurfing holiday..

Amazing by the way!

haha Sorry for any misleading suggestions that canberra has epic lagoons, the clips with the sand dunes (maxs flaka and my spock) come from my trip to brazil last summer.. I just put them in cause I found them on my computer... Anyone who has seen four dimensions will have seen the lagoons before.

Easiest way to learn anything is to book a flight to Jeri, its windy there right now, every day 30knots.. take triktionary because u will run out of moves to try!

flipper, the video with more footage from the sand dunes is called jeri2009, click on the vimeo tag, and youll see my other videos.. ive posted it on seabreeze before so im not doin it again..

but heres some more Jeri for anyone who hasnt seen it before, its me filming max.. he sells power balance bands so hes way better than me!

I am off there in December for most of the month, taking my brand new skate 100, but I think I am going to need more than trickionary. Can't wait!

You have just answered your own question... the lack of waves in most European spots (ie semi frozen pond) was the start of Freestyle.

Given the sheer abundance of wave sailing locations in OZ most people sooner or later get hooked to that and simply can't get enough. Then by the time they might start thinking about Freestyle because wave sailing bores them their body is so fcked up they simply can no longer do it.

After several torn ligaments in my foot and a knee that's starting to play up. I don't even bother thinking about any of that twisty twirly spinny freestyle stuff. Still it's great to watch.
