The bikes would want to be stronger than their WS gear!

Using my extensive library of NP broken booms & masts, I could form up a cool bike frame...not that I'd ride it!

[not sure if I can say that here or not?]

I'd prefer it if Shimano got into windsurfers, rather than NP getting into bikes.

Without wanting to be unfair to a sport I love, I think Shimano etc are better at making gear that is workable and efficient. Of course, they are dealing with a much bigger market, but it seems to me that something like a Time Trial bike (equivalent to a Formula board in some ways) goes together a lot more easily than most performance boards. Of course, it's hard to compare rigging up a race sail to chucking wheels on a TT bike before a comp, and boards don't suffer from salt, but I still get the feeling the bike stuff works better.

Of course, even the TdF bikes are also under a lot of rules that make them easier to own at the cost of a drastic performance drop, but Shimano seem to support that and it doesn't seem to hurt cycling.

PS BMW have done bikes that look pretty standard..... dunno why they'd be better at bike design than bike design companies.

umm chris,
the flyfishing world is shocked that shimano has purchased gloomis rods (a supposed premium flagship brand) and seem to be downtuning them to mass produced junk.

your info is.....?

My info on fishing is that I don't got no info!

They do make fantastic bike stuff though. If they make bad fishing gear, maybe it shows that a manufacturer may not be able to make good stuff in too many sports, which could mean in turn that NP should stick to sails?????

These will be the first under their own label as Neilpryde bikes...
I work for Scott and actually most of our top end carbon road cycles have always been made by NP - so nothing new for them! In fact I think they already make a lot of other brand's frames for them...

Can't be too hard it's just like making a bunch of RDM masts right???

I hope they make some 80s themed BMXs.. that match the old Combat wave sails, with plastic spokes and red tyres.

Yep and is already behind the company so makes sense.

I dunno about the seabreezer's but here alot of windsurfers are into cycling as well, so why not expand into cycling as it is a similar customer base. Pryde might make the frame and rims but probably not most of the components (same as every other bike brand does). Then they might sell a road bike for $10,000 thats a fair few sails worth for something with not much on-going development costs and a much bigger market.

Any prices been leaked yet?

Fairly hard market to crack into I reckon. The road bike market from my perspective is broken into two categories, those bikes which have the name and the history (Conalgo etal)such that people will pay enormous amounts of money to ride them and bikes that offer much more value for money (Giant etc).

NP don't have the history of Conalgo to attract the brand snob or the market power of Giant enabling insane value so i'm not really sure where they will fit in. Unless they come up with a very unique product which is almost impossible to do in road bikes these days I don't really see it amounting to much.

Errrr, fit a rigid mast and sail on it? Now that would be a sport difficult to master and it would be just plain lazy. Slim and trim will be out and fat people in spandex with logos all over them just aren't visually appealing for some reason and the humble bib style overalls will again find wide appeal, especially with big logos. C'mon Eileen! Y'know what I mean!

Sorry just one of my silly moments...I'll just retire back under my rock.

I would also guess their Carbon fiber factory is making bike frames and/or fishing rod ski pole sections just like fiberspar, triana and excel are.

Actually if you check out triana's website you'll see they have quite a good range of rods and no distributor in Australia!

Are the development costs for a $10k bike really that low? A succesful newish top-end manufacturer like Cervelo has costs such as wind-tunnel time, engineers working on bottom brackets, guys who can fabricate full carbon fork and steerer combons, etc. The costs of producing the mould for something like a fork and steerer, let alone a frame, would seem to be miles higher than the straight mandrel used for a mast or the constant-section sections for a boom.

And then there's the marketing/team costs you need for cred and input. Cervelo run a slick PR/website, and a full Tour de France "test team" plus a women's team. Running around three continents with a signpainted bus, dozens of bikes, several cars, mechanics, soigneurs, directeur, film crew and team of 25 pro cyclists doesn't seem particularly cheap.

Although I'm certainly no expert in any way, it would seem far from surprising e if Cervelo or a similar manufacturer actually had a much higher development-cost spend than NP.

Maybe NP are just going to use last year's moulds from the brands they produce under contract; apparently other small manufacturers do.

True, it depends on how far they want to push it though especially in regards to marketing & team costs. Tunnel time isn't really required given cfd is so good now (it looks flash & makes good techno photos though).

Cervelo's r&d team still doesnt seem that big considering the unit's sold would be alot higher. Mould's wise, well pryde is in a great position there- 2011 pryde's could be 2012 Scott's etc

well... looks like those of you that would buy the bike if BMW had something to do with it can buy go out and buy it. According to this article the Neil Pryde bikes where co-developed with the BMW design studio:

LOL.

you are kidding right? thats gotta be one of the more ignorant comments i've read in a while.

yer your right swoosh, ignorant that I didnt include comments such as... "having studied cfd"? . But I guess I only saw a brief glimpse of it (as with many fields), I should stand corrected by someone that works everyday with it.

Using REAL riders in wind tunnel applications is a precise science huh, what with all the cameras they have around showing their wind tunnel testing- wouldnt possibly be used as an advertising opportunity . Yes tunnels are a good validation tool, a great advertising tool, essential... no (as opposed to cfd analysis). I never argued against that when done right the data from tunnels exceeds anything that can currently be achieved by cfd.

Broad sweeping statements- hardly. But hey it's an internet discussion, if I wanted to really get in depth with a subject I wouldnt be talking about it with a bunch of anonymous windsurfers. If my comments s*** you so much maybe you should think the same .
