At the spot where I learned it was called "dredging". I've heard others call it "slogging", and others "putting".

duempeln in German language (2nd and 3rd letter go in one, a u with two dots/points on top)
slogging is the English one I heard most often, then float n ride (but only when talking waveriding)
I've always called it ploughing since the 1980s, but I rarely (never?) hear others use it. Only one other has mentioned it in this thread.
