If you were only allowed to own one board, what would it be?

I'm curious to see what you guys think is the ideal one board. I kinda figure no such board exist for the broad range of sailing everyone does, but, if you had to choose just one that could probably do a bit of wave and flatwater blasting what would it be?

What I have - Goya One. Finally a FSW that rides waves proper.

But if it was more B&J and very little riding, an RRD FSW. Bloody fast but so forgiving - best gyber ever made, period.

For slalom a board of 64-68 cm wide would be a good choice.

If only interested in sailing in 18+ knots the i-sonic 87 wins hands down.

For me (75kg flatwater only these days) iSonic 90. It's my go-anywhere buggy

[edit] Disregard. I just saw you want wave & flat water blasting

I have only one board, 93lt starboard quad. But then I only sail waves, and live somewhere that this suits 90% of our conditions.

Up until I got into GPS sailing 6 months ago, I used a 2012 Fanatic Skate TE 109 as my flat water blaster (32.71kn 2sec peak at SWR), and this board doubled as my big waveboard for small surf and marginal conditions. Mind you it is not a wave shredder, nor is it a GPS speeder, but it is a great all rounder. Love this board, so it gets my vote if I could have only one.

At 110kgs i went from my favorite - 'fanatic triple-x 109' to a 'tabou 3s 116'. Still like to keep a big light wind board though.

Hard to go past a FSW IMO.

I had a JP 101 FSW, used 4.7-6.7 wave/freestyle/freerace sails in 12 knots to 25 knots flatwater to small waves.........and I could uphaul on it. Just a great all round board.

Funny you mention a JP 101 FSW, as that's the main board I ride. Whilst not super fast on the flat water (with me on it anyway...26.87 knots so far) it feels great on small waves and has such any eazy, comfortable strap position.

I am interested to ride some more wave orientated boards with a simular ease-of-use factor, that have a fair bit of top end about them, so there's some mentioned above that are on the list for test runs Cheers for the info so far.

Phil the older JP's are usually the most freeridey of all the FSW boards in all the magazine tests (recently / last couple of years more freestyle oriented). The most wave oriented of the FSW boards are always Goya One and the Quatro FSW with Fanatic Freewave also looser than most. Haven't ridden one but the Simmer FSW thruster is really good on waves apparently. I've seen guys shred on them and I thought it was a wave board until I saw it. They're not slow and draggy though, pretty good on the flat stuff.
Out of all that 3 of 4 are based in Hawaii so there ya go :)

I rented an RRD x fire the other day in New Cal. At a 100l you can blast this thing like a slalom board, it cuts through chop like nothing else, and the jibe is super, I reckon you could slash small waves with this thing even though it didn't look like it was designed for it.

I've had a range of FSW boards and this would be a worthy competitor.

You would have to go for a FSW.
90-100 litres rider weight dependant. Your choice of brand. Personally I use RRD FSW101.

Recently picked up a 2006 JP FSW 85 in very good nic and wished it had outboard strap positions to make it more of a fast freeride (pretty sure that JP FSW's from 2007 on had outboard strap option).

Do agree, can't go past a good FSW for all-round versatility.

Gazman, my 2008 JP FSW has an out boaund strap positon. Used them a few times on the lake with the cammed sail. Feels slightly more comfortable for speed (though I'm slow...) but for me it wasn't worth the effort changing the strap setting. Feels fine on flatwater in the "wave" position.

Even though I dont use it much anymore (just doing GPS stuff and gettin' old), my Fanatic Freewave 104 is a board Id never get rid of.
Its fast, gybes beautifully and goes pretty well on smallish waves.
Has the options of either in or outbound straps and change the supplied 29cm freeride fin to a smaller wave fin and it goes well. Works with wave sails from 6.2 down to a 5.

Did the person(s) that red thumbed me do so because the board was red, or you have actually tried this board and have a differing opinion. Please tell, this is the benefit of being in a forum community, being able to learn from others experience.

@ Mark, I just read the latest bieardseeker test on FSW's and the JP -92 FSW thruster was reported as being the most wave competent. I may have to give one a try!

Oops, now I know why I got red thumbs it was the Firemove I was referring to. Very confusing, so many models gave the word FIRE, in the name.

Just checked their site and if I hadn't used the board I would have called their description marketing hype, but its mostly accurate.

"Light feel, great control, quick manouvers
Freemove

The firemove complete the whole new “FIRE” family of our range. The closest freemove boards to a pure freestyle wave, the Firemove, incorporate a lively feeling with a great speed and control potential. The perfect match for those looking for fun both in light winds and choppy waters without sacrificing planing and manouverability."

yes I think you started on the Xfire the other day and then got the (white and red) Firemove, awesome board for our conditions !!

I was slightly being thrown around with the Firerace when we were sailing...

My 95 FSW is a 2010 Fanatic 95 Freewave. .. but probably would be very similar to a JP FSW 95 (I own a 2011 85 JP FSW - avatar). With the straps out (configuring it as the freeride part of the FSW), it gives it up wind ability as good as bigger freeride boards, and it's still very maneuverable with the straps out. The outward straps are still very inward, so don't have the issue of chop hitting your front ankle or leg. It's the "go to" board when conditions are unknown, or choosing 1 board for an after work sail, or when it's very onshore (mushy wind). It's also a jumping machine.

Roger that
But I assumed Phil was talking about the older ones as I doubted he was after a 2012 or 2013 model.

That would be a sweet board. Just need to win Lotto to pay for it... But you never know, a late model (2010 / 11) may come up second hand.
