The unhooked handlepass loop, a history,
The unhooked handlepass loop was first performed by Otto Lilienthal a pioneer of human aviation who became known as the Glider King. During a flight on 9 August 1896 seconds before the first unhooked handlepass loop, Lilienthal's kite stalled and he fell from a height of 17 m (56 ft), breaking his spine. He died in Berlin the following day.
Whilst few tried to emulate him in this Cleveland era, against a background of Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi, and a fashion of full beards or mutton chops, the seed was sewn.
Fast forward to the early 21st century, a new breed of radical riders, Haslow, Lenton, Bose, Naish, Yates to name a few were pushing the envelope, drawing perfect circles in the sky with their modern equipment, to the amazement of all who witnessed.
Their bravery, courage and seeming disregard for personal wellbeing pushed the sport to further heights, literally. How could they do such a thing? the polies with knees destroyed from jumps far less audacious cried, and cried, and cried.
So arrogant were these riders, to unhook from such a powerful aerofoil, then, in an almost rude gesture, turn their back to the very power source that could hurt them so much.
But they did, and did.
Big jumps and loops lost favour in the latter part of the decade, as powered tricks became more the vogue.
Meanwhile, the polies still did the same old stuff.
Footnote: There is talk among historians of an earlier unhooked handlepass loop attempt in China around 1500bc by a peasant called Sum Karnt, however historical records are incomplete, and scholars generally accept Lilienthal as the first to survive, albeit briefly, attempting the move.

Polies carnt do unhookd loop handle passes
By the definition of 'loop' that kiters use, every windsurfer can do an unhooked loop handle pass.
Don't even need to be in the water.
Just spin your sail around, pass the boom from hand to another. The tip of your mast did a 'loop' in the same way as kiters do 'loops' and you passed the handle without being hooked in.
As many others have said one day a kiter will rotate with the centre of rotation between the rider and kite and the equipment will loop about the rider, and the rider about the kite. When they get good at it they will get the kite to fly backwards.
If it never happens the loops in kiting will never be loops, just stunts and tricks with a kite. Any little kid can do kite loops with a flexifoil kite on the beach, no big deal.
Go watch any paraglider doing loops. In fact I think a film was posted over on the kite forum not long ago. That is what you kiters need to do to do a loop.
One day somebody will do it, and it will be the most impressive thing a kiter has done. Short lines means very fast rotation, but check out the forward rotation speeds some windsurfers are getting (Koster, Boujima etc.). I bet the G force in a kite loop wouldn't be much bigger, and definitely no bigger than a spiral dive in a paraglider.
By th time it happens I suspect windsurfers will be doing triple loops, so kiters will still have a bit of catch up to do.

Windsurfing has been around for what,,40 years?
Kites have been around for about 12 years and have already smashed the speed record. And kiteing is still in the early stages of development, whilst windsufering has no where left to go.
I suspect somebody is about to post a video of a somebody getting very very close.
Can you (in any of your multiple logins) post a video of a kiter doing a loop as opposed to a kite doing a spinning thing, which as you pointed out in your original stiring, has been happening since ancient chinese times.
