Want tips for boosting big air on chop/flat water

I found a couple of photos of GClarke going big at Lagoon a few years ago. With a solid 35 to 40 knots the wind starts to feel pretty solid under the board and on this jump Geoff seemed to get hit by a second gust which floated him a huge distance. I am pretty sure he is using a 4m sail and a 68 l Acid. More than enough for those conditions.


I wonder if that's my 68ltre starboard acid?
I bought one from Tassie and I've forgotten who from..
If so it's certainly got an easy life now.

yep I am pretty sure someone registered Slingshot pretty early on though I have heard Lofting is quite common and not just amongst the cool New Yorkers...."cool loft Man/Dude".... lofting does seem to indicate that a urban journey involving cars, busses, parks, trees, and roads may be involved...not sure how intentional it is though.

What size sail is he using 5m? And it looks at least 30kts, you could probably get going on a 3.5!

Well, you can't teabag successfully unless you occupy the higher ground!
BTW great shot. Would the poley's view up reveal boardies over a wetsuit? I do hope not!

Thanks! Was going to go windsurfing last Saturday but my kite mates have been giving me hell as I have probably kited less than 10 times in the last 3 years! I just bought a Woo device to see how high you can jump so made it interesting. I got kinda bored with kiting to be honest.

What I realised is the kite/kiter is a potentially awesome platform to film a windsurfer. The video clip is like a drone footage so want to experiment more with it. I didn't know windsurfer so I think he was concerned as I stalked him! lol

lol Yup Dakine shorts all the way, I use the same for the slalom kit also.

Considering that physically & technically it is much harder for a windsurfer to get height compared to a kiter, windsurfers do pretty well. Watch this (and hopefully enjoy)

part of the trick (particularly in stronger wind) is tilting the board "toes down" so that you get the wind under it, kind of acts like a sail itself. Maybe someone has already said that?

Ok I know Im a long way from anything close to "big air" but I feel like i made some ground (or should I say air lol) on Friday. It was quick sail so I didn't get a chance to try much but it was good try a couple of things, and apart from a crash or two I felt like I had more control. Its really handy to look back at the video to work out what i need to do next. Also it's very interesting to look back and see difference between how I think things happen in my head and how they actually happen in real time.

So after all that I came away thinking I want to go bigger, higher, further! In short what i'm thinking I need to do next is-

-More Speed
-Hit bigger ramps
-More speed
-Pop the board more
-Tuck knees up more
-Put the squeeze on more
-Turn downwind, go for distance
-land pointing more downwind

Any feedback is welcome

I found when I started kiting a lot my control in the air with the windsurfer really suffered. I guess it is different muscle movements, or just lack of practice!

You are getting some nice little chop hops there. One thing though is you need to start sailing with your arms a bit straighter. Especially your front one. It will give you more power into the jump and help you get some more lift because you can do a nice hard sheet in with both hands as you are leaving the lip of the wave helping the board pop. With your arms in their current position you haven't really got anywhere to sheet to. Try and make the number 7 out of your front arm and front leg if you know what I mean. Also try an overhand front grip when you chop hop. I think it will give you more leverage to do the squeeze and get a bit more lift. Keep in mind though that the last statement comes front an overhand sailer who finds underhand uncomfortable so i could be biased on that one but I think it allows you to get lower under the boom for a nice big pull down on the boom once you've popped the board.

Thanks, I'll give that a go. I was actually thinking I need to try giving the sail a good pump on launch, so extending my arms makes good sense. I'll even try the overhand method.
