i've been saving my penny's ,and am ready to buy a carbon boom
i have had my naish carbon boom for 10 years now ,and time to renew ,
i will sell it off .
I have been looking at the chinooks ,very nice ,any others I should look at .
I would add a Severne Enigma to the shopping list or at least look at it as an option.
I like mine... but wouldn't want to seen to be Brand Pimping.
Also have Severne Engima booms here. I've had my wave one (140-190) since they first released the super skinny one and have absolutely hammered it in waves and freestyle for years, it loves it. The only thing I have done is replace the boom pin locking clips after about 5 years which is a common problem on all booms which use that type of pin clip (many). It still worked ok was just more piece of mind.
Also depends a bit what it's for, wave, slalom etc. In the wave 140-190 market there are a heap of options now, all very similar, all basically ~25mm dia, similar front ends etc. Slalom is a bit different as some have wider tails for bagged out sails, better looping/pulley options etc. Slalom wise I reckon the Pryde booms with the integrated outhaul and super clean tail look nice but i've never had the best luck with their products

The German magazine SURF tested a bunch of alu and carbon booms in 2011. They measured the force needed to pull the boomarms apart.
Force measured in N/mm (higher numbers means a stiffer boom). All booms tested in 180-240 range.
Looking at the numbers the carbon tail of a NP X6 doesn't add any stiffnes compared to other alu booms. Also the cheapest carbon booms are barely stiffer than the stiffest alu booms.

Personally I own the Prolimit carbon booms, my supplier in Greece has them really cheap and I have been very happy.
One is 2016 180-240 for my freerace gear (Ka Koncepts and Koyotes) and the other is for the small gear 140-160.
(I am light, my biggest sail is 7.5)
I tried couple of times on clubs Enigma and the X9, haven't really noticed any significant difference.
I guess on bigger sizes it does really matter a stiffer boom especially on jibes, going full power on a big sail, a cheap Alu or carbon boom feels like holding a flexing rope.
A lot out there ..I thought the pryde one looked interesting too...looks very tidy with the strings inside the boom arm on the adjustable outhaul system ,clever .
i can also get Gun .or Goya .
i will be buying a 180-250, slalom and will be using a outhaul system .

My issue with this test is force to spread the boom a certain distance, does not account for slop in the fitting of tail into main tubes. Some would move a bit with almost no force, others tighter.
I think it need to be just the main tubes tested for deflection, then the tail likewise.
Remove the extensions, lay it flat on sawhorses and push down

Just got one..very nice. I like the narrower grip .
I got a freemove but it still has the pulleys for the adjustable outhaul.

They're both good quality products, so you can't go wrong. I'm sure you'll find people with positive feedback on both. And unfortunately we're not likely to get any reliable data with stiffness and strength.
Personally, I would choose the NP on a subjective basis due to:
a) always had a great reputation for quality
b) I like the brand
c) quality of the head and tail visually to me looks better
d) price doesn't affect my decision too much
Others will love the Chinook, all good.
Hopefully you can find a NP retailer and get some extra discount off RRP.
Enjoy whichever one you choose.
I like the pryde one too...I really like the idea of the hidden lines ...just had a look at windsurfing perth ,and they sold it ..

I just scored a NP RSX carbon boom 226-266. Not normally a NP supporter. Totally stoked n amazed how much better Carbon is than alloy boom. Like WOW !!! Every pump, every gust is converted into forward drive. Girlfriend? What girlfriend? Im in love with another..
Good to see you are not concidering aloy they don't last one year and snap but carbon will do 10.
i have a servern its solid and nice v grip but heavy and all the holes elongated badly in the tail piece very quickly had to repair, modify.
also have AL360 carbon amazing boom best quality I have seen period.
i also like North they are light and strong wish they were V grip but.
Does anyone currently make a carbon boom at 160-210. But that is at least 44cm wide inside at the front for my small slalom and speed sails, and with a adjustable outhaul compatible rear end. Preferably more old school bend shape than the really narrow C shapes. All the short booms I have found are made for wave sailing and a way too narrow for what I need!
There are some Slalom booms that might fit the bill at min length 180, but they won't go short enough. Can they be successfully shortened (cut 20-25cm off the rear of the main tubes)

Chinook would have been on top of my list until recently, but then we had a 2 year old Chinook carbon boom 180-246 break (without any crash worth remembering), and a couple of months later after that a Chinook 90% RDM 400 mast broke just sailing along. Maybe just bad luck, but the broken mast will be replaced with a different brand. It actually felt rather solid (read: significantly heavier) compared to a couple of RDM masts from other brands that have seen more usage without breaking.
Geez ..that's scared me off ..chinook might of been a lemon .i had a NP one fall to pieces ..it was 10 years ago ,but everything corroded on it .and the head was awful.the jaw didnt open ..but big improvement s now .
the chinook is a new model ,so maybe it won't happen ,they have their name to look after ..
the new pryde boom might be the one .

Waveinn. With booms becoming smaller diameter, consider what your harness lines will do.
Freeride/Slalom/speed gear: Will change effective line length as a given line is designed for a specific boom diameter. Some rigs/sailor combos are sensitive to these changes in line length.
Wave: With some brands of lines, the lines won't fasten properly to boom and will twist around making it difficult to hook in, or flap around in the chop causing rehooking mid-gybe. Both cases very annoying. I ended up getting some specific lines for my Reduced Diameter gauge wave boom with the help of the dealer to stop these effects.
The solution is new lines (non-significant cost), but keep it in mind.
I have 2 Al360, Italian. Bitchen, the covering is the weak point.

it is going to depend on which booms are available where you are.

Just replaced my previous Enigma 170-220 boom after about 10000km with a 160-210. Does my 7 m to 5.6 race sails.

I went down the shed and used a measuring stick.
i just brought another NAISH CB ,HAD 9 1/2 YEARS , out of my last one , just a bit loose ,
i got a 180-240 .
if you put it near a severne ...ha ..they look the same
windgenuity .
sailquik , the starboard flight booms look just the ticket for deep profiled small boomed sails
Thanks for the heads up. That is indeed interesting. But I fear they might actually be too wide!! Especially that rear end. No specs on their website either.

did look at duo tone s ,but I 've had a bad run with north booms ..

I like most of my Severne boom, stiff with easy adjustment. But the adapter for RDM,s is crap. My previous boom the adapter clipped into the head and stayed in place. The Severne one is like an after thought by the designer.

I think they now have an alternative head for RDM, well mine is anyway. I wonder if the elongated holes on some Severne booms were the earlier ones with only one button.
