Andrew, I'd have thought you'd have the genie set higher than 20kts, you're going to go faster than that upwind even on very light days. For average days I set mine to 25kts, for good days 30kts.
Yeah mate, but I am old and slow!
The sweet spot for my assy fins upwind is around the 18-20 knots mark, so yes, I usually set the genie at 23. On the real big days at the PiT I stop and look at the end and walk part way back anyhow.
I found this tidbit on the GPS-SS forum.
"The latest version of the GW52 util (v1.3) has a SPLT.exe and when this exe is called from within a command box like this:splt.exe test4_157800134_20151020_094413.sbp it splits the file on date into differen sbp files "
There had been some complaints from posters that the GW-52 made one continuous file of consecutive sessions (if not cleared). Apparently this is a way to separate them. I don't really get the issue though as when I load the files in GPS-Results I can just select the day/sessions I want to analyse.
Can someone with Windows savvy explain what this is and how to use it please? Start with what is a 'command box' and how loudly I should shout at the computer to 'call' for it.
I
dropping into windows now to install latest utill, I'll have a play, there's a remote chance I can figure it out.
OK here's what I found.
in the search box under the bottom left windows circle icon type "command prompt" clicking on that brings up the command line.
typing splt.exe -------------- brings up a fault report saying that splt.exe is not recognised. But typing :splt.exe ----------- returns to the comand prompt with no report.
The "Load SBP" button loads a file from computer into the util and then the file can be converted to .csv .kml (plt, nmea, gpx) by pressing the log convert button. I'm not sure if the split function worked on this file, because I've got no mult session .sbp files.
I spoke with Mal Wright today and he is keen to solve the issue with RealSpeed not finding some of the GW-52 5hz files Alphas. Hopefully I will meet up with him this weekend to see how he is going with it.
Just had a walk of shame back along the beach with the sail on my head totally shielding the GW52, where I'm walking on the beach there's no tracks.

So the sail acts as a total shield to the sats.
Another interesting development, If the GW52s are left in a pouch in hot sun out of the breeze the display can fade and disappear. I think this will probably be worse with the black ones. It comes back as soon as the unit cools down, so if it happens to you, just dunk it in the water, or put in the shade until it come back.
I haven't had any problems with mine while sailing, but it's only just got hot enough here to start wearing board shorts.
And here's another one, I took two GW52's for a sail today, and compared their results, If you thought those very short wave lines were just noise, (must admit I was a bit concerned) looks like they represent what's actually happening, your speed really does vary that quickly.
Here's the two tracks superimposed, showing my humble 2s peak.
Not a bad article that essentially sums up what we've been talking about...

Wow major sense of humour loss mate, do I have to put smiley faces after the post so you know it's a joke. Or was it that the comments were a bit close to home!
Not any kind of joke and that is so far from home as to be in the next Galaxy. Just in really bad taste and totally irrelevant to the topic. It would still be with a thousand smily faces. What is your problem anyhow?
Quote from Manfred: "Running the GW 52 at 1Hz to match the GT31 also makes no sense because of the missing antialiasing filters - the units have to run with the highest frequency possible (GW 52, Thingsee: 10Hz) to avoid this, because simple decimation of the data without filtering renders the data useless..."
Hello from across the pond here in the uk. Not jealous of the warm winters you have but guess it's summer over there :) ok ordered my GW-52 and waiting for it to arrive. I have been reading on here that it will work with Windows 10. GE-52 website has it listed up to Windows 8. So any thoughts from poeple using Windows 10 in how well it works and any pitfalls ????. Also looks like I'm going to have to buy a helmet for best results unless i can hide under beenie hat, I have a hat with a strap that goes over beenie to stop me losing it in a wipeout. It works for my Canmore 102
Good to hear you are working on a way to position the GW52 on your head.
I cut a section of the foam lining out of my Skiing type helmet and put them (x2) inside it (Antenna facing up) inside a sealed ziplock bag. I don't see any reason why sewing a pocket into a fabric hat would not work really well, also within a small ziplock bag for safety, as long as the hat is not something to absorbs and holds water in the fabric which could block the signal. Most modern synthetics should be fine.
I have also thought of gluing a small clear plastic 'Otter box' to the top of my other helmet.
Others have used cheap copies of the Go-Pro camera case and its mounting to hold their GPS.
Andrew asked in a PM about the details of the corrupted Win 10 computer with V1.4. Below is my reply in case anyone else is interested in the gory details....
I installed the utility but when I clicked on it to run it, it did not execute and I got the 'wait' icon (rotating blue circle) on the desktop. Eventually I rebooted the machine since the desktop was locked up. But, on reboot, I got a dialog box about 'sticky keys' as part of the accessibility package of the OS. What was really going on was the keyboard driver, or something, was completely messed up as the keyboard was randomly going in and out of caps lock. I could not login with a password. Eventually got the login via image working which is when I realized what was going on. Tried uninstalling the util but the damage was already done. Reinstalling the keyboard driver didn't help either. Finally punted and installed a 6 month old backup of Win 8.1 that I made just before upgrading to Win 10. After the install of Win 8.1 and a reboot the 'sticky key' issue was gone and the keyboard was again functional. I then upgraded back to Win 10 since I like it much better than Win 8. Haven't had a problem since the upgrade (but I now do nightly backups of the laptop just in case). Manfred was nice enough to send me a new key for GPSResults since the old key would not work with the 'new' OS. I installed V1.3 and have had no problems with it. I wasted a day or so of time getting back to a working solution so haven't felt the need to retry the experiment by reinstalling V1.4 of the utility. Wouldn't take quite so long to recover with the complete computer backup but would still be a pain.
G'day
I'm stuck on a MAC for the next few days. Any easy way to install the utility? No VM Ware installed... and I haven't used a MAC for ~20 years, so I don't know what I'm doing :(....
New to the GW-52... go easy boys.
I just received two GW-52 units. I've read though everything I can find from Locosys and this forum thread, but haven't found an answer to my issue. It's been obvious that the learning curve will be a bit slower than the GT-31 and overall, I'm disappointed in this "new and improved" unit. But, it's all we have right now, so I might as well try to figure it out.
I can not access the general settings on either unit right now. When I press (Start & Adjust) it will bring me to the GMT options screen. Mine is set at GMT-5.00. There is no backing up to the other settings. I can scroll up and down, but it belongs on GMT -5.00. I push Adjust to "choose" it and it will go back to the clock. (Start & Adjust) again and I'm right back at GMT -5.00. Both units, same thing. They have already been outside, found satellites and set the correct date and time, so I should be done with that setting screen. I would think. Yes, I can adjust all settings when using the utility app on my computer, but need to be able to so it on the fly.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Pilot error, I'm sure, but nothing in the "manual".
Dean
To get to your settings page, simultaneously press "ADJUST" and "GPS".
That should get you to the page you need for general settings.
As for the correct timezone, yeah I had issues early in the stage of owning the unit but have noted that it's now settled down and remains on +11.
Good luck!
