Hi Ash,

I'm working night shift Saturday and Sunday nights, but hoping to sail Monday afternoon.

Lyndon & Pete might be sailing Saturday and/or Sunday, but I'll let them respond as I'm not sure of their plans.

Hi Ash,
I'm available all weekend.
Sunday arvo might suit me to foil in the kincumber broadwater. (if the predictions hold)
Monday is looking like the day. If I had to guess, we will most likely be sailing up near Saratoga sailing club, but that is a negotiation yet to be done.
Other than that, friday & saturday look like sup surfing Umina beach might be the best option. We have plenty of spare gear if you or you and family want to try that.

Also just letting you know I have a tandem windsurfer which is an absolute hoot with family. Great way to get a timid person started, or first planing experience for a more advanced. Let me know any time you would like to give it a go.

We have a "viber" group which you can join if you want to be part of planning our next session , and solving little gear problems etc.

Hi Ash,
as with Lyndon most likely getting out Sunday arvo or Monday, most likely foiling , either from Gossie or perhaps Broadwater

I'm always amazed watching the speeds the foilers get in these video and then see no harness hooked in!

I've certainly done no analytics about the forces, but I think the lower drag coefficient of the foil means the power generated by the rig is transferred more directly to board speed.
As there is less resistance from the board traveling through the water, it simply goes faster much sooner, there is less strain on the sailer holding the rig. As a result you don't need the harness so much.

I find that once you start to fly it's immediately noticeable how much less effort it is to hold the rig.

Come give it a try one weekend. It's even better when you're flying yourself.

Not really windsurfing, but Lyndon and I SUPed from Saratoga Sailing Club to Kincumber Broadwater today. Great afternoon to be on the water and quite a lot to see along the way (Fish and Stingrays). Interesting to see how the outgoing tide affected our board speed along the way. Woy Woy channel being the fastest part of our trip despite some strong paddling further along the route.

Its training for windsurfing and exploring for places to windsurf, so i reckon it counts.

Sailing today from Gosford Sailing Club (meeting in the carpark on the southern side of the club). Most likely we'll be on long boards, but maybe foiling if the breeze is sufficient.

We'll be there from 12-12.30pm, come down and say hello, or better still come for a sail with us.

Hi Andrew,

Great to hear from you. I'm pleased to advise that while there are no longer any official learn to windsurf schools on the Central Coast, you're in luck.

Heavy1, AUS814 and I have combined well in excess of 50 years windsurfing experience. We also have a wide range of equipment, some of which is perfect for teaching beginners on. We also have 3 or 4 others that regularly or semi regularly sail with us and who are at various stages of ability from beginner through to competitors at state and national level. The focus of the group is fun and frindship and we gladly welcome newcomers to join us.

We sail from various locations on the Central Coast, although predominantly the waterfront near Gosford Sailing Club, or from our home club of Saratoga sailing club.

I'll send you a message directly on Seabreeze with my contact details. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to the wonderful sport of windsurfing.

Firstly we are having a practice with LTs out of saratoga after lunch tomorrow , sat 18th.
Relay handover , Le Mans starts etc I believe is the agenda.
email AUS817 for details.

Next , Just a plug for Kincumber broad water, off broad water drive saratoga.
Such a great place in a south west breeze. Looooong uninterrupted reaches with relatively flat water.

The walk in and parking is a bit tough and the walk out is a killer at low tide, but its still totally worth it to me anyway.

Looks good Lyndon, must give it a go when it gets a bit warmer. Liked some of your greatest hits at the start. LOL

Kincumber broadwater is to SW what green point is to NE. that is good topography for steady wind, but little chop.
Up wind of the launch about 400m, are weed beds like peel st, however when windy there is negligible weed in the deeper water.
At a very high tide the weed beds don't work to suppress the chop and so you do get some chop then. Half tide is best compromise for walk out and no chop.

The best launch is accessed from a walk lane at 94 Broadwater drive saratoga.
Once at the end of the lane you are best to turn right and go to the beach a little to the south west. The beach to the left is not as firm.

From the grassy edge the sand is firm for about 25m, which is enough to clear a short fin at mid tide.
After that it is may be 50 m of really boggy stuff, where every 3rd step is bottomless. Yuk.
I usually lay on my board for that bit (upside down) and float over it pushing with my feet.

Its foil deep in line with the oyster racks to the south. Thats where the ribbon weed starts and its pretty firm.

As I say , especially at low tide, the set up and walk out is a chore (you have been warned), but to get canton style wind and flat water, without any weed and clean water, .... its worth it to me , anyway.

Lastly Ash says it works in NE as well, but I can only personally recommend it if its between w and s . Don't go there for SE or NW.

Lastly the reaches are nearly 2KM, without the risk of hitting bottom , even with a foil.

There are submerged rocky shelves about 50m out from the opposite shore, but just stay a little out from the opposite shore and you will be fine.

HI Guys, yes its freezing and the day light hours limited, but just a shout out to all our group, we are likely sailing Tuesday. Where is yet to be decided but probably Saratoga. So give us a yell if you can join us.

Lyndon and I had a very lightweight sail yesterday from Saratoga. I gave Lyndon a few pointers in light wind pumping so lookout next time we're racing in super light breeze.

We also did some research for the Relay event I'm trying to put together. Saratoga will be an awesome venue for this, more into to follow once I get approval from the club and the NOR created.

Sam and I are sailing from Gosford Sailing Club today from 12:30pm. Anyone wishing to join us is more than welcome.

Lyndon, I'm in for Tuesday and the forecast is looking good at this stage.

Hey Guys
Almost went for a sail last Friday in SW corner of the Broadwater but just way to cold when I tested the water. I will try to catch up with you one weekend soon.
This Sunday on the Broadwater might be ok if I can brace the cold water. At least a little less fresh water in the bay so might warm up a bit.

Hey there "Hobie hairdresser" ,

That Hobie needs to get out there. Happy to help make it happen.
Why not give it a go this weekend, or try a SUP.

Just post here or send me a seabreeze email.

Sailed kincumber broad water today. Looking at weather station wind flicking between west and north west. As such it is to be avoided. Wind extreme inconsistency , very difficult to point of dangerous.
Still think it works nicely if South West, but to be avoided if , west , especially tending to north west.

How are you guys transitioning people from low-riding to foiling? I've noticed a few down here on Pittwater getting their sea-legs by towing behind a RIB to get used to the foil. Maybe some try the eBoard route? Or do you just go the "sink or swim" method of just getting straight onto a foiling windsurfer and going at it?

I must admit, although I've never foiled before, I feel that having the feel and pressure of a sail to lean against would feel more comfortable while trying to deal with the board.

Hi , I'm booked in to try an electric foil board soon. (family fun basically) Ill let you know if the sail makes it easier. To be honest I don't think it does. the foil seems weirdly stable in the roll axis once going at speed. You don't need to balance against a sail. However the sail causes diving and climbing with the power of a gust pushing the board down and sheeting out causing a climb. This needs constant adjustment of weight fore and aft to maintain steady flight. In short I think the sail makes it harder. Possibly harder than a kite or wing because of the way a sail pushes through the mast foot, although that's just supposition.

Im just starting with sup foils and my limited experience there also makes me feel that once you get all that catching the wave stuff solved, the riding bit is probably easier than wind foiling. IMO

Excellent work Lyndon, you're the Real Solo Man. Great effort to sail for that long. I bow to you.

In 1988 I was in FNQ on a sailing holiday and decided to sail from Shute Harbour to Daydream Island on my Windsurfer O/D. Made it there on the same day as the Pro Sailboard Series Racers arrived, they were heading north.

Had a chat to a few of them then headed back to Shute Harbour, but the tide was against me so I had to hug the coastline to make any headway and keep out of the channel. Took three times as long to get back. Wife was starting to worry. All good.

Glad I did it then as there is no way I'd do it now lol.
