So, what are people sailing- both board and sail wise? For example, if I turn up with a 20yr old Mistral with a 10 yr old 8.5 sail- am I going to look just ridiculous and be ssoooooo far off the pace I will be asking everyone which way the sailors went? Just old and slow now!

Handyman as you're the man to beat on the GC, I calculate that you would have been right up there sailing your usual race! With your skills and experience you would probably still give most of us a (yet another) lesson in Raceboarding. Hope to see you up there soon. Most importantly anyway, its more about the fun of it.

ICarbon - thanks for the photos and the drink! (Shhh, outside assistance!)

Hi all,

so if I were to look at joining this racing what would be the best board and sail to get.
Better on RSX or old one design?

Cheers,
Paul.

Either RSX or raceboard will get you around the course and you will have some fun.
The numbers seem to be building more in the raceboard class at the moment.

RSX is the only one design option if you want one design. The Old Mistral One design is no longer a competition class but the board is still good for raceboard class. The Windsurfer One design is still used but not popular in QLD.

I have chosen raceboard over RSX because they seem to have better light wind performance. The wind seems to be light more often than not. I couldn't get the hang of sailing upwind on the fin alone on the RSX. Having to decide when to use the centreboard in variable conditions was a bit anoying as well. Its also nice to have more rig choices for different conditions.

As for choice of gear.
RSX, you only have one choice.
Raceboard, Is mainly a budget question. The new gear is nice and any of the brands seem to be competitive. Simon at Board Crazy seems to be the only shop who stocks new longboards. The others have to be ordered with long lead times.

The old boards such as the mistral one design are still competitive. There are not many second hand raceboard sails around, but you can use any sail to start with. 9.5m is the class maximum.

Note that on that page the first 9 are all old boards no longer in production. These are still very competitive - as in they are winning world and national championships. If you can find one of these in reasonable condition you're laughing. But the new boards are super nice as well, and although the waiting times can be a pain, in reality it could also take you a long time to find an equipe II or megacat in good nick.

If it is the original equpie it is the same as the mistral one design . So a bit narrow wont make as much difference up wind as it does downwind . Will tend to fall of the plane a lot sooner running free
