Interesting!...I'm trying to figure out how to move up to the Sunshine Coast and am hoping to retire there.
I spent my teenage years in Auckland and yeah it was a bit windier there but nothing beats the freedom of NO WETSUITS!! (for most of the year anyway) and the warm water in SEQ.

my wife would like to retire in noosa. I think I could do that too but Caloundra and surrounds has better windsurfing options in my opinion.....

cheaper too.

We want to retire to Peregian or surrounds. We have a family holiday there every January and I get a good WS session in almost everyday at lake Weyba or Cootharaba.

yeah agree very much with peregian.

family and I go there about 3 times a year. I am very fortunate to have a brother with a holiday house there and we get to use it a bit. grabbing dinner at the pub and brekkie in the town square followed by a wave session at noosa is a very nice way to sped the day.

kids love the skate park there as well.

there is a half decent wave at peregian creek and the carpark just south is always empty. I sup sail there when we are staying up there from time to time. I may need ot check out pitta st next time. there Is a mention of it in a surf guide I have.

where are you located sbc,

because the wind records for port Macquarie show all this month it's been 15+ knots majority of days.

www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/IDCJDW2115.latest.shtml

Heh Gestalt
Mate I live and can absolutely testify that if it was 15+knt every day, I would not be surfing so much
I could count the number of time i have sailed this year on one hand.....not kidding either
Others are about the same or a bit more...it has been very very windless on the waterways.
Wind up high, just not at sea level , or from a usable direction

Pitta St is a bloody awful place. Filthy water, untreated sewerage, stingers, sharks and (unconfirmed) rumours of a croc living in nearby Stumers creek. Locals are uncouth also - nasty teeth and wonky eyes, and unreliable tempers.

I highly recommend that when it comes to surf, people would be best served by staying south of the Maroochy River, like at the Gold Coast for example.

coffs obs do look a little on the sad side.

you should go play with phil or sbc, their obs look much better,

on a serious side. at this time of year all of our weather up here comes from down where you guys are. except that low from 2 weeks back. in general though, if we're getting action then you guys must be also. except possibly coffs which may well be a black hole. Rockhampton is a rain black hole so it does happen.

here's some qld fun in 6 knots to get you guys by, only 1 and a bit months to go till the northerlies should start to kick in.

why not come up and play again.......

traffic in Noosa is appalling in summer.

yep & ya also gotta put up with the people. Wouldn't mind retiring in a quieter part of the hinterland but wind does suck on sunny coast.

Gotta take the good with the bad...
Wellington- 30 knots for 300 days a year & freezing for many of those & such a depressing place.
Sydney- Dunno bout it being windier than Brisbane, so much traffic that you can't make the beach before dark so you buy a formula board to play it safe.
Coffs- Great Whites, tourists, nudists and locals with two heads.
Gold Coast- no wind, traffic (90% of drivers using 1% of the roads on the coast are always on the road you need to use), get lost or shot on way to beach.

i'll go out on a limb here.

is there a chance that gps sailing is starting to have a negative impact because it is encouraging the need to be going flat out all the time.

what about cruising? going windsurfing knowing full well you will not be planing.

I've always had a no wind setup.

first one design, then a raceboard, traded that for formula and now the sup.

windsurfing can be done long before the kiters arrive at the beach and long after the kiters have packed up. why limit ourselves

Windislife you have been very quiet after starting this pointless discussion. So it seems there are plenty of people who sail on the Sunshine Coast. maybe you need to move or get some bigger gear.

Nice pics Gestalt, looks like fun- and looks many days around this part of the world. Non-planing wave sessions are definitly fun- and certainly beats paddling!

PS- Stunned, after bitching about no wind yesterday, some of Coffs' seemingly optermistic forcast spilt down this way and I had 3 hours in a clean 12-16 knot northerly. Maybe the whinge and win strategy is worth a shot.

Hey wiindislife,

One mast, one boom, a 5.4 and 7.0 both rigging on a 430. A 110l free ride and whatever wave board you choose and at your weight should be covered from 12-25 knots.

No biggie and lots of sail time.

EvlPanda have you sailed lake Burleigh Griffin yet?

Nah. It's still frozen over (and apparently full of bacteria).

I've sailed Sydney Harbour, which is pretty special when you gybe and see the bridge and opera house, but it's also chop from everywhere, gusty and full of enormous boats.

You know what, I quite like light wind summer sailing. Some of my most memorable sails on GC were on a 7.2 and 110 liter. At 16 knots the wind is constant, the water is flat, and everything is warm. And the apparent wind angles are so high, because you're going so much faster than the wind.

While storm sailing is awesome fun, and challenging and therefore rewarding, light wind sailing is where it's at sometimes. You look for maximum efficiency; every ripple counts.

As for Canberra take a look at Jervis Bay. Whitest sand in the world and only... 2 hours away. Gerroa isn't far either and I had dinner sat next to some JJ guy the other night; we actually work in the same company. So cross-off here I come. ...only 2 hours away.

Anyways. Light wind sailing can be wonderful. Don't knock it. You just need the correct gear, as always.

I enjoy light wind cruising on the retro longboard with a 7.8 modern cam'd sail. Taking advantage of those light easterlies off Wynnum\Manly, there's just enough wind to hold you up in the harness, the daggerboard gives you the freedom to go almost where you want, and improves your short board tacking.

Sailed it for 2 years on the lake while I was there. Good fun - battled snow and duck shyte but got some good sails in on the west side of the lake. Great for the big slalom boards! Heard some horror stories of what's in the lake but didn't see anything!

been sailing LBG 30+ years, still don't get what the water quality issue is about.
seems like a fairly recent phenomenon.

I was there in 98,99,2000.Others who windsurfed there told me "if you fall in don't get a mouthful of water" to me just another freshwater dam like anywhere else. Had my best sail there in winter and started snowing on the lake - crazy but fun.
