@CJW - yeah the north boom is probably a bit heavier, even in proportion to my slightly bigger one. and nope, thats not with an uphaul, haven't sailed with an uphaul for about 15 years (not bagging anyone that does sail with one though)

One of the main reasons I sail with an uphaul is that I've used it on 3 occasions when I've trashed gear out the back. It's handy as you can wrap all the sail remains, masts etc onto the boom and then tow it behind when paddling the board in, easy :) Saves trashing your sail by lying on it. Rarely use it when sailing buts it's handy to have imo

^^^Superfreaks start looking like an option when you get over the idea that lying on your ultralight, ultra-expensive sail is going to trash it.

Same for rigging on rocks or gravel, putting a foot through the windows or shoving it under a heap of crap in the back of your car etc.

I weighed my Superfreak ME 4.7 - it's about 3.5 kg. HotRod 370 mast is 1.57 kg. So yeah, it isn't ultralight now that other Hot sails and other brands are competing on weight.

Ok had a little dig around and have put together a light rig. It's a 4.6 3batten Wavesail that looks Pretty John Fogerty.

Some specs,

0.982 370 mast
1.968 sail
0.316 sawn off wave grenade carbon.
1.856 enigma boom proto with no harness lines (don't use 'em)
0.290 Uj

Totals at about 5.40kg.

Pic without UJ as I forgot.

Edit* have added wrong pic, was tricky balancing kit on scales..

Edit** do I have to point out there are reasons why all rigs aren't this weight? I can never tell what is assumed knowledge on this forum these days.

Obviously I haven't rigged it properly, just put a mast in it strictly for the sake of the thread. I think this sail has been posted before on SB. It has got the em3 material so if it was red it could be even lighter. There is still a fare bit of extra reinforcements as it is a wave sail.

Yeah man I just save money on gym memberships that way.. Plus my favourite sailor is Craig Maisonville who never wore a harness.

Uweh I don't know if the mast will make it into production. Would like to see how the rrd goes, those Italians usually give masts a great workout by crashing into each other..

That's so funny you are saying that! My friend has been hit while he was doing a top turn ON HiS wave at Kanaha and it was by an Italian!LOL

Apparently the Firelight 5.0 (408 luff) rigs quite nicely on a 370, so my dream rig is:

Chinook Pro Carbon 135-185 2.1 kg
Streamlined 30 cm carbon 0.4 kg
HSM 5.0 Firelight 2.8 kg
HSM 370 Ultra 1.1 kg
(don't know Ultra weights, only a guess based on what read elsewhere on forums)

Total weight 6.4 kg

if that little to help:

Chinook Pro Carbon 135-185: 2.06 kg announced, 2.07 kg measured.
HSM 4.3 Firelight: 2.50 kg announced, 2.75 kg measured.
GUN SELECT RDM 370 1.30 kg announced, 1.40 kg measured.
extention of mast * 0.04 kg measured.
foot mast (euro pin) 0.23 kg measured.
total: 6.49 kg

*I lengthen the mast in top with pieces of old mast which I cut to the length wanted for each one of my sails.
I find to lengthen the mast in bottom, where there is the maximum of mechanical stretch, is not a good idea. it is heavier. (but easier when you do not know the sail)

The Avant Viper 5.5m weighs 2.8kg. So I guess this is the lightest wave sail there is?

"Over the years, I've ridden for a lot of brands. I'm always looking for the right spring, balance, and feeling. We knew we needed to bring everything we learned about high-tech laminations into the world of elite wave riding. The Viper is so light and comfortable, I can pull sick moves without wrestling the rig." - Peter Volwater

Hi al2,

is your firelight the "normal" or the reef edition because of the weight difference ?

thanks in advance

I used to have the normal edition, but after breaking a couple of powerex masts and ripping the mast sleeve each time I switched to the reef edition.

Hi al2,

no worries about the few gramms on weight of the reef edition last longer...
