Windsurfing Victoria (WV) with support from Parkdale Yacht Club (PYC) is currently working on running a windsurfing event for the WV members on the 1st April 2012 from PYC.
The name of the event will be the 'WV Classic'. An event that is full of classic activities, which will be a classic event in the future. The idea is this event is run annually and becomes WV's signature event with PYC.
Please note; this event will not be a clinic or demo day. As WV has provided directly or supported a number of clinics and demo days though out the season. This will be an event for WV members with a focus on fun.
As per the start of the season event at Elwood Sailing Club (ESC), WV has invited all the WV supporting Victorian windsurfing stores and schools to be part of this. This includes SHQ, RPS, The ZU, Core, KA, SBHQ and WaSSuP, with VWS.
The event structure will be based around social fun like we had in the 80s and 90s. All entrants will be part of a Team of four. Some of events we are looking at running are;
• Course Racing race (water start, with a upwind leg)
• Slalom Figure 8 race (beach start, as many laps as possible within a set time period)
• Relay Race (beach start, to outer mark and back)
• Random Fun Race (TBA)
The schedule of these races would be based on the weather and other PYC club day activities on the day. As an example we would be looking at running the 1st race at 10:30am, the 2nd race at 1pm and the last race before 4pm. With regards to beach start races. A marked off area will be setup by WV with PYC to ensure safety and access for all beach users.
Points will come from 3 of the 4 events and each team member, for each team. This allows for more equal opportunities for people to be an overall winner etc. Areas of acknowledgment could be (1st, last, best dressed, most retro gear). Plus we are looking at maybe having freestyle demonstration sessions during the day. Example; Long boards at 11am and short boards at 4pm, for a maximum of 20 minutes each session.
Team structures will need to follow some guidelines.
• Four members per team
• Have a captain
• Team name
• One member of the team needs to be an intermediate sailor that is confident to compete or someone with some form of old style gear (e.g. retro long or short board)
• Only one team rider from a store or brand is allowed per team
• Teams can be supported by stores or schools or other windsurfing clubs (this is encouraged)
• The gear you sail can be yours or borrowed gear
• Your national sail number needs to be displayed on your sail by any means possible (WV will have some coloured electrical tape at the registration table)
The event will also include a dinner BBQ with access to the PYC bar. The dinner will also include the WV Course Racing series and the Victorian Wavesailing Series (VWS) awards night as well.
More details on the event will be posted in the next week or so, so stay tuned and start thinking about setting up a team with a name and marketing the team.
A suggestion has been put forward that the teams could also be from different locations (e.g. beaches). Bonno vs Mt Martha vs Elwood vs Inverloch, etc.
Team SHQ is in! We'd like to invite 2 people to join our team, 1 intermediate level sailor is needed to join us. Being a SHQ teamrider does have it's perks, so please reply to this post if you'd like to be on our team. I'm thinking of dusting off the old teak boom from above our shop door for the event. It hasn't been used since 1979!

roomer has it that Nick Moloney from Core Boardsports will be busting out the Mistral One Design that he used to become the first person to windsurf across Bass Strait..we are on the search along the coast for Retro kit and are really looking forward to seeing you all on the 1st of April, if your are Surf Coast or Geelong based and want to join our team then please get in contact, the more the merrier...we are sort of hoping it will be 'nuking' as we don't know how to go fast or turn corners, our biggset sails are 5.7m ?!?! yeeeaawww catchyaoutthere
If it isn't 20+ knots our team won't get off the beach (unless we bring the mega logs) The team has two but we need a truck to move them as they are so wide
Used to have this nifty trick for getting rope booms nice and tight. Not sure I can remember what it was. Maybe we should have a 'rig this old skool sail' challenge!!
Shopping at the Salvos this weekend for my costume.
Will there be a prize for the fastest guy in a velvet suit?
Sounds like at lot of fun, The ZU Boardsports team will be there ! We might even have some retro boards stashed away in the roof. Check out this "ahead of its time" Rip Curl thruster. All we need now is a few additional team members with some retro rigs. Catch you there!
There has been a few queries about the retro and intermediate team component. Only one member needs to be a intermediate sailor or only one member sails with retro gear (say post 2000).
The 1st and last team, best fancy dressed and most retro trophies has now been ordered with the WV Course Racing series trophies.
Announcing the SHQ Boardsports Neilpryde RS One-Design Team!:

Greg has an original Wally that's missing a boom.... Wonder if our old teak wooden boom might make an appearance in the hands of Retro Man? What do you think Fletch?
