Just got home from epic session at Bulcock Beach. My gf went for a walk to Kings while I was playing and she came back with oil on her feet and said the beach smelled really bad.

This is not good.

Container ship travelling from Newcastle with load of ammonium nitrate (fertiliser) in containers. Lost several containers in big seas (der) and one ripped a hole in the hull spilling fuel oil (200 tons) into our sea.

Stupid bastards must have over estimated their skills and under estimated the conditions. Sound like some kiters at Bulcock lately

We will end up paying

This is really bad guys...i mean REALLLY BAD. Oil doesnt just go away, this **** is getting stuck in our mangroves, staining our sand, killing our wild life and about to ruin our river.

WHY THE FCK ARENT THE FCKING AUTHORITIES STICKING UP FCKING FLOATATION OIL CATCHERS IN THE RIVERS TO STOP THIS!!!! Seriously, should I get on the phone and organise it for them?????

WHY ARENT THEY HIRING EVERY FCKING LANDSCAPER ON THE COAST TO GO DOWN WITH THERE LABOURER RAKE SHOVEL AND WHEEL BARROW, CLEANING THIS, PAYING THEM AND SENDING THE SHIP COMPANY THE BILL. YOU WANT MORE FCKING JOBS???? THERE YOU GO!!!!!! MAYBE FCKING ANNA BLIGH CAN TAKE IT OUT OF HER FCKING ADVERTISING BUDGET (WHICH IS HIGHER THEN MACDONALDS NATIONAL ADVERTISING BUDGET), AND PAY THESE GUYS HERSELF.

I am sorry about the swearing guys, but I have lost faith. Lost faith in our authorities, I have lost faith in our government, I have lost faith in everything after this, our government has lost my vote.

Bloody hell, they aren't doing squat. I went to the beach this arvo and saw no one there doing anything. The boardwalk was black.

Dont get this **** on your kite - it is a pain to get off

Could also be real slippery on the strapless like we had last year.

What a mess....and the Epa want it to be picked up by shovel and rake and not bulldozers- as they are worried about beach impact - From what i Saw on Kawana tonite they would need a cast of thousands

I say pick the **** as fast as possible - what a pack of ineffective buerocrats

Was wondering what that black s**t in the water at Stumers was yesterday. Didn't think it had reached this far up. Might trade the yellow switchy in for a black f-one.

This is how the Sunshine Coast Daily put it:

"Experts are hoping an oil slick will stay off the Queensland coast for as long as possible to limit environmental damage."

And the ocean with it's abundant sea life is classed as what?

this is a catastrophy and will have years of impact to the region and eco systems.

It is rediculous that the authorities let things like this happening! dodgy Vessels in Australian water in Cyclone conditions leaving Brisbane. WTF!!???

Where are the regulations Mr Rudd and all the other careless ar.eho.es??

About 650 tonnes of fuel and ammonium nitrate - a poisonous powder used in the manufacture of fertilizer, is estimated to have spilled from the vessel. Non of the containers are recovered from the ocean!

This better sets off a big prevention plan before bigger ships loose their ****!
The GBR has to be protected from such!!!!

Im sorry for all the birds, turtles, fish and people in this region!

went to kawana beach first thing - high tide
still oil on the beach but not as much as yesterday - I figure a lot has been covered by sand which now means its buried in layers of sand

No sign of any cleanup

Anna Bligh is having a meeting today to work out a plan - by the time they do anything it will be well mixed into our environment -

I hope she enjoys her fresh coffee and muffins at her meeting while the turtles and fish and birds are choking on their new polluted environment

At least Bob Abbot had Bullodozers and trucks scraping up what they could - but he got told to stop by the EPA idiots who said it was not they to pick it it up and they dont want machinery on the beaches -

Is there anything the Kiting and surfing communities can do? Is it worth throwing down some time and all meeting at a point with our shovels. There is plenty of us if you include the surfers.

If anything it may create enough stir to hurry the authorities / government along.

I can organise a crew from up here to come down for the weekend. work all day, Cable at night. Suggestions??

Or is this far worse and completely out of our control?

a disaster management plan should have been implemented immediately- I am disgusted that this could happen but absolutely distraught at the impact it is now having because it was not contained. I agree- heads should roll !!!!!!!!

Please let us in the west know where to email to register our outrage!

Isn't ammonium nitrate what they put in to soldier's food to make them less horny?...not good, ugly slick too........hopefully the ship's owners will be made to pay for their negligence. The hurricane was flagged many days in advance.

Pick up the slick and bring it to your politicians doors step I say.......see how they like it in their face too.............throw a mud pie.........man this makes me mad.

Otherwise I wish you all a great weekend.

They could get a million $ fine how pathetic .The Exon disaster cost them 10's of millions why is this any different an absolute ecological disaster that will remain for our life time or maybe the next generation as well.

It's not only the damage to the shore line but the fishing industry will be destroyed as well , watch the rise in imported sh!t seafood in years to come.

That looks real bad. Has anyone even tried to make up an excuse for why action wasn't taken to limit the impact of this spill ASAP? There has to have been plans in place for this sort of thing... Its not the first oil spill ever... Attempts have been made in the past to clean up and limit the spread from other spills. ????

Its getting worse

From news.com

"THE cargo ship that caused one of southeast Queensland's biggest environmental disasters has leaked oil in the Brisbane River.

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown, who flew over the ship berthed at Hamilton at 1pm (AEST) today, says there's a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River from the vessel, the Pacific Adventurer.

He said the oil had escaped a boom around the stern of the ship.

"There is a very serious oil spill now in the heart of Brisbane," Senator Brown said.

Around 100,000 litres of oil from the cyclone-stricken Pacific Adventurer have washed up on the shores of Moreton and Bribie island and parts of the Sunshine Coast.

The areas have been declared disaster zones and state and Federal authorities are responding, while the maritime watchdog is investigating the spill. "

I'm not sure about the paragraph re: Authorities responding. I was down at Kawana earlier and there were no authorities in site. Just a really strong diesel smell from that 100 000 litres!!!!.

Same sh!t happened in Spain years ago and after I think 10 years you can see the oil spots around the beach and rocks.
If you step on them you can only remove it with fuel.

Just a couple of quick points. Normally container ships are ok in weather such as this, they were not in the midst of the storm that was further up the coast but would have experienced some conditions. The issue is more that there has probably been an issue with the rigging of the containers to the deck. They lost 31 containers overboard and I am not surprised that they got a hole punctured in their hull. You would be surprised how many containers are lost of container ships each year. The reason they dont recover them is that they normally sink to the bottom within a day or two as very few are airtight. As to the people saying what are they doing bringing oil in close to our shore etc.. what was spilled was the fuel oil for the ship, it was not crude oil. The impact and residual from this is likely to be far less than if it was crude oil as in the issue with Exon Valdez and the event on the coast of Spain as another member mentioned. Not withstanding this, the response from the government is appalling, even the lack of comunication to the local communities is sub standard.

Does anyone know if the spill/slick has made it's way into Morton Bay at all? Just I want to go kiting tomorrow at Sandgate, been hanging out all week since last weekend when I had an excellent day on Sunday.

Oh! we've got a great plan for the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Anna and the boys will make sure all those greedy old pensioners and battlers don't overfish the bay. The EPA have NFI. They'll just sit on their collectve, money grabbing arses and fck the coastline and the bay, so nothing fcking lives. I feel so warm and fuzzy.
