Of course Monks have never been green at heart. Google page 1 of the bible.
"

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Agriculture. Although it is in scholarly and cultural pursuits where most educated people look to the medieval monasteries for their contribution and influence, we can hardly overlook the monks’ important cultivation of what might be called the practical arts. Manual labor played a central role in the monastic life. Although the Rule of St. Benedict (c. 529) was known for its moderation and its aversion to exaggerated penances, we often find the monks freely embracing work that was difficult and unattractive, since for them such tasks were channels of grace and opportunities for mortification of the flesh. This is certainly true when it comes to the clearing and reclaiming of land. A swamp was utterly without value, and was only a source of pestilence. But the monks thrived in such locations, and embraced the challenges that came with them. Before long, they managed to dike and drain the swamp. Soon, what had once been a source of disease and filth became fertile agricultural land.

Are you that intimate with me to be calling me son? Did I gave you that liberty to do so?Why you huggers consider yourselves in to be in a higher moral ground than people who have different views? Who is the nazi here?

Also the argument that there is more people in the ocean that ever is rubbish. In WA? The less populated stretch coastal region together with SA in the whole world? Why there are not exponentially more attacks than here in hawaii, california, east coast us, south africa and other places that GW's roam? If there is a surfer or two more in your spot in WA and you don't like because your surf is bad and you don't like people starring at you that is another problem. I bet we had more water users in the 90's in WA alone than now.

The 'son' call wasn't pointed at you but kiterboy. I can see the miscommunication on my part. No need to be so defensive. Just a conversation.

Interesting that you call us huggers when it could be people that do care about intergenerational equity and have a greater sense of the interconnectedness of the environmental world, we don't call you names, *cry cry cry*. I would say that there are more people using south-west WA waters now but we are both speculating, aren't we? No hard numbers or soft for that matter. All we can use is anecdotal evidence.

When you raise the point about why there are not as many attacks in Cali, Hawaii and such, the environments surrounding these areas oceans are so different. The productivity in the water and surrounding ecology is vastly different. We shouldn't just assume that there are more sharks lets cull them. Is there a problem in the food webs? Fish stock not supplying the higher levels of the trophic chain? Other apex predators pushing sharks into inshore waters? There could be a multitude of reasons. It COULD be because there is an above normal abundance of sharks. Lets investigate the reasons why. Before we make cliched knee jerk reactions.

No hard feelings Novetti, just discussion two point of view.

Mean while today another 8 sharks have been feed and fattened up ready for the swim West for the summer months , should be another new bunch arriving next week to entertain the punters It's a constant flow of 6 to 10 new sharks per week.

And you guys are talking about a Cull?
That will never happen. Way to many Shark lovers spending big bucks for a thrill, over 350 tonne of food gets deliverd every year to them sharks just to keep the tourists happy. :)

I'm over 50 and started surfing when I was about 9.

In those days if you mentioned sharks to the older surfers you were called names and told that maybe tiddlywinks was the sport for you.

Mind you in those days guys were baiting 44 gallon drums (Shark puts head in drum to get bait and can't get out) in the Port Hacking river and catching 15 foot tiger sharks

About 15 years ago I remember watching steve Irwin and Malcolm Douglas with my young son,
I was thinking this is a country I want to live, people with a scence of adventure people with a love of nature
Fast forward 15 years and I'm living with a bunch that takes their kids to mardi gras
And wants to cull anything that interfers with their lifestyle,

I was watching an Attenborough documentary the other night about the ocean. One of his final lines was "We can either destroy, or, we can cherish."

Because we don't support capital punishment here. We try to control drug dealers and domestic violence, but without resorting to Sharia law or something, its difficult. Sharks however are fish, they're killing people and they're easily controllable. My priority is to go surfing without having to worry about losing a leg. What's your priority?

If you are that worried about sharks take up a different sport. Sharks are a part of the ocean and that;s not going to change, if you are that worried about it get a shark shield or shark smart for your board. Radiater make wetsuits and have stickers you can stick to your boards that make it harder for you to be seen from above (blend in with the surface) my next diving wetsuit will be a radiater elude mid. Am i scared of sharks yeah sure, would i be happy if they took a few big ones out that are classed as a risk, no problem. Do i want them to have open season on great whites, NO. There are risks with any spot and if you play in the ocean shark are part of that risk. Will the risk of shark attack keep me for my water sports NO, for all those that want to cull, stay out of the water.

Easily controllable ,
They've had baits out for donkeys
And 95% of the time they've caught the non target species, if your scared of the ocean you don't and shouldn't go in the drink
