Remember the French Boat is Team NZ design package
!

After the Rainbow Warrior, the Kiwis are helping the French with boats!!!!!!

Hi Mike, yeah I used to be dirty on the French!
Hey, awesome to see Bugs & B for NZ Windsurf 50 years in March

Yeah Brent, agree with B team and imagine if they end up being the Challenger

Alinghi lost her mast. BoatOne sailed an upwind and while bearing away on the left hand mark, a structural failure occurred, buckling the mast in two pieces at a third of its height, the rig collapsed on the deck and into the water.

Broken boats are hard to fix and never really as good as pre-smashup. Would imagine a fair bit of surrounding deck and support structure damage. This will be compounded by the need to get a new mast+rigging+sails up to speed and checking all the high load points that got freaked out.
Shore crew will be on 24hr shifts to get back in the water ASAP. Memories flooding back, sleeping in containers, grinding FkD carbon... do not miss that part of the AC one bit.

It must be like being in a car crash at that speed.

The mast down has slowed the bravado in Barcelona. In a little dirty weather only Lunna Rossa+Orient Express ventured out and called the day short in deteriorating conditions. Good to see some of the AC40s on the water getting dialled in, team Artemis below.

I wonder if they do much simulator based training?

Get all the procedural stuff down pat before trying to do all on a flying boat

Alinghi back on the water with a spare rig. Hopefully they can get back on top of the training schedule. All the other usual suspects going hard in great conditions. ETNZ boat still on a ship some time away I believe.

Patriot taking a hit. Noticed they're covering up the big deck openings and have tell tails checking out the airflow over the surfaces.

Close up of Alinghi's mast going creak-ping-bang. Seeing this sequence, they really dodged a bullet.

An article talks to the first close-ish sailing I've seen plus bit of video showing ETNZ and Ineos lining up for some promotional footage. Both teams looking damn quick, doubt there will be room for errors on the race track.

Unaided human observation of stuff going on around us can be very deceptive. That's where critical thinking and accurate instruments come in.

Probably usual exaggeration going on, was probably 8-15knt day with a single gust near 20. Either way, boats are pretty damn rapid. From what I understand they are getting on the foils under 5-6knts!

I'll pay that one Pete.

But I didn't say it wasn't 20kts, only that it didn't look 20kts.
In the absence of accurate instruments, all we can do is give an inaccurate estimate.
What I said is quite legitimate.

What would you're estimate of wind speed be?

A good article as the racing draws closer. Did not realise that if ETNZ are successful they will be the first team to do win 3 cups in a row. History beckons.

I really enjoy the cup as the Pinnacle of Sailing, as defender we miss seeing all the Teams in Auckland Sailing on our local waters and understand the price to pay to defend the cup.

NYYC Patriot is going to be re-measured due to their deck openings being covered. She looks bloody fast and aerodynamically clean.
It's game on as all the kit is used and seen.

Preliminary Regatta starts in a few minutes

Lidar Radar being used to show the wind in real time, just watched a practice race between Alinghi & Orient Express but now can't see it to link to.

Yes, the preliminary racing has started and day 1 over.
The French well they will have to improve a lot their second race start not even in the race.
Our kiwi boat looked good and was looking a good race against Prada but issues for them at least sorted for their second race.
Americans looked good with a fairly even start and could get high, once in front over for Ineos!

Here in NZ we have the racing free on TV3 or 3 Now app for reply in morning.
