Will go sailing on Saturday and get back to you then.

If you do experiments that show the horizon is not a straight edge but that it actually curves, then you should believe the earth is spherical.

I would probably believe so myself too were it not for the theory that at the equator we are supposed to be like revolving ay 1000 mph plus lol.

Google "Does air have inertia". You believe in friction and intertia right? If so, it's a slippery slide to understanding Coriolis force and visualising the revolving oblate spheroid we live on.

Speaking of levels how are you going replicating, or otherwise, my picnic table experiment?

Why would the atmosphere be stationary relative to the surface of the earth?
What would be holding it back?

How far are you willing to sail?
Head out 10 miles and take notes on what shore features you lose sight of at what distance.
You're welcome to use binoculars or telescope to aid with spotting features.

Then when you get back to can see just how high above sea level those features are.

I have observed that the rain water pools in an even depth sheen along the top of the aluminium table top. I could get a spirit level, but water will always find its level. If the table is not flat I will observe water missing from the higher end. Yes?
Weirdly you can't see the foreshore over the Boombas side. Dunno why that is. Maybe a Mirage Meniscus thingo???

So, you're a tall man, I'm assuming your eye is 1.85 metres above sea level. If the table top is 0.8 metres above sea level, you should be able to see a laser pointer sitting on it. If Pcdefender/Petermac/Pm33 is shorter than you ... he wont.

See, this all makes sense to rational people that can compare this with whatever else they have learned. But to a typical flat earther they will deny it, and then claim someone is in on it and then come up with fantastic stories such as 'you are drugged on the plane and then land at a different location'. It seems anything goes when defending flat earth, except of course observation and testing.

Don't stress peoples. I am expecting the first results from our multi centre picnic table observational study any minute soon. PcD is due to report on his findings any moment now.

Getting Pcdefender to perform his own studies is a good idea. I worked with people suffering from Delusional Parasitosis a while ago. Its a terrible affliction that makes no sense at all to other people. The psychologists we engaged told us the best way to help them was to take their claims seriously, pretend to do your best to find the microscopic bugs infesting them and their bedding. Then tell them that you just can't see anything, so best they have a look through the microscope. Go along with their every request.

See, I understand that you are being sarcastic and that you are joking about what flat earthers would say, but there are some that think your comment is genuine.

Can't we move the centre of the earth to the south pole? It would make travel a bit quicker than that map.

The icewall at the edge can stay though. It stops all the water falling off the edge of the planet and getting in the way of the turtles and elephants.

The elephants suck up the water that flows over the edge and blow it back over the rim. That's how we get rain.

They aren't turtles. They are tortoises, as is obvious from a cursory examination of their feet

Derr.... Next time do your own research and look at the photos.

I can imagine it now, you will tell me that the tortoises are wearing flippers and the government just want me to think that they are turtles. Yep, that makes CT sense. It is a conspiracy and has no real reason and no evidence at all.

I stand corrected.

Elephants? No. They are hippos wearing face masks.

Are there supposed to be 4? I am not up on science, so I wasn't aware of the correct number. Maybe the other 1 or 2 are backups and waiting nearby with the standby turtles(tortoises)? I think holding the world up 24/7 would be too much work for two elephants, so they probably have shifts.

You guys are just fake experts making stuff up. The turtle has no legs... "In the Chinese mythology, the creator goddess N?wa cut the legs off the giant sea turtle Ao, and used them to prop up the sky after Gong Gong damaged Mount Buzhou, which had previously supported the heavens."

It's a photo! Don't beLIEve the lies of religion/mythology. Believe what you see.

The turtle has legs. Any other comparison is crazy. How many gigantic space turtles do you know of? All the other planets are spheroid, so no turtles there.

You people have been gotten to and are in on it.

^ Obvi a plot by that Chinese Winnie the Pooh fella.
Accordingly the gospel according to Terry: " ...The Discworld has no such predictability or adherence to the laws of physics. The Disc is a flat earth, a circular plane supported by four gigantic elephants which stand on the carapace of Great A'Tuin, the world turtle."

I think that one works for everyone. For the casual CTer, the response will be 'yeah, that's correct!'.

Me, I just think its baloney. Turtles can't float like that with 4 elephants on their backs.

Oh, just to get a headstart; was Trump shot at because Biden wanted Trump out of the game, or Trump wanted people to think that Biden wanted him shot, Biden wanted people to think that Trump wanted people to think that Biden wanted Trump shot, or just some idiot that thought he had the right to kill someone he didn't like?

Back to the turtle/tortoise debate. It occurs to me that there is almost no matter in open space, so flippers or feet are largely irrelevant. Turtles/tortoises are going nowhere.

How fast is Earth's orbit around the sun?

Earth orbits around the sun at a speed of 67,100 miles per hour (30 kilometers per second). That's the equivalent of traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town (or alternatively London to New York) in about 3 minutes.

Other than in its orbit, how else is Earth moving through space?

As well as moving around the Sun, the Sun and Earth are orbiting around the dense center of our galaxy at some 447,000 miles per hour (200 km/s). Our galaxy, in turn, is moving relative to the other galaxies around us, and so all the mass in the universe is continuously dancing around.

Only an idiot (ie you) would paste text rather than a link.

www.space.com/33527-how-fast-is-earth-moving.html#:~:text=Earth%20orbits%20around%20the%20sun,York)%20in%20about%203%20minutes

"Earth's spin is constant, but the speed depends on what latitude you are located at. Here's an example. The circumference (distance around the largest part of the Earth) is roughly 24,898 miles (40,070 kilometers), according to NASA. (This area is also called the equator.) If you estimate that a day is 24 hours long, you divide the circumference by the length of the day. This produces a speed at the equator of about 1,037 mph (1,670 km/h)."

I did post a link.

So we in Australia are supposedly rotating at maybe 500 mph and the earth is also travelling around the sun at 67 000 mph.

It takes a lot of faith to buy that sh/t lol.

It would only take faith if someone just made it up.

How do you think they arrived at the conclusion of how the Earth and the rest of the universe moves?

One way would be to say "we live on a Globe Earth, and to make that work the earth has to bin spinning and orbiting at certain speeds."

Another way would be to observe where the planets, stars and other galaxies appear in our skies and plot their positions. Then it is possible to develop a model that explains the true motion of these stellar objects rather than just observing relative motion.
Testing this model would be done by making predictions as to the position of these objects in the future and then comparing the observed position to that prediction.

No faith required
