Common sense. The solar panel is made of cheap glass and a bit of silicone spread over.The best battery ingredient: lithium and sulfur. Cheap as dirt.Consider that against the whole process of extracting coal, transporting,, processing, converting in power plants into electricity, disposing of waste, dealing with CO2 and other pollutants.

The way it will play out in the future is that fossil fuels will continue to be used, or reduced where possible, but increases in energy use will have to be from clean energy sources.

There are different solutions for different locations. Scientists and corporations ( even fossil fuel companies) are working on different solutions for clean energy. Maybe kilo54's intellect could help in the UK.

On the news last night the whole roof of a house will become a solar panel in a year or so time. That solution may not be suitable for england. Once battery prices or storage devices become cheaper the household power could be off grid. The grid and base load will still be required but wont need to be increased to meet the expanding need for power.

Just wondering how many people use a phone book anymore? Its called change. Maybe its the wrong forum to ask that question

I think there is a large assumption by many that solar equipment will become vastly more efficient and storage will become a lot more cheaper. I can't see that happening the lastest & greatest panels are more expensive per watt to purchase, I sell the stuff, its not getting cheaper and it still depends on the sun shining so its not going to become vastly more efficient, in 20 or 25 years its all going into landfill and will have to be replaced. Doesn't seem like a good solution to me, unless of course you sell the stuff, like I do.
