well. since solar + battery is already 10x cheaper then fossil ,
100x then nuclear

Source? Cos nowhere I've seen makes those actual claims.

Similar stuff was published in the Soviet Union. Those who disputed the scientific superiority of Socialism were often diagnosed as mentally ill. This usually resulted in lethal consequences.

The modern version is simply screaming "racist!" or "nazi!" or "denier!" at people until they just roll their eyes and leave the debate...

After all, we all know there is 97% consensus amongst climate scientists that GW is caused by human activities.

No mate as I explained before a new study says it's 99.4.

Another one by Cook or using his "data"?

Even if it's 100% accurate ... It's 100% irrelevant.

Common sense. The solar panel is made of cheap glass and a bit of silicone spread over. The best battery ingredient: lithium and sulfur. Cheap as dirt.Consider that against the whole process of extracting coal, transporting,, processing, converting in power plants into electricity, disposing of waste, dealing with CO2 and other pollutants.

LOL

Well, you're wrong. Even taking CO2 tax into it.

Nuclear is the answer for national grids, until storage for household PV systems becomes economical. And that's a lo-ooong way off.

I, like most, strongly for a good environment. Built an eco friendly house using recycled material. Stackwall, so no outside cladding or interior gyproc. Placed to the South of an evergreen windbreak. A passive solar conservatory on S. side with night curtain, silvered to reflect most of heat. Salad veggies/herbs year round..........analysed stomach parts of crabs from Liverpool bay, dissolving them with HF in solid GOLD crucibles. Found it took 15 years for HALF the pollution in the bay to clear. So in 30 years, 1/4 STILL there! Disgusting.
So, yes, for a clean planet, but this CO2 hysteria is rubbish. Best wishes!

So you're a pom troll. Must be desperate to spend your time shooting the breeze on an Oz windsport website.

Love porn! Do not understand why you call me a troll.

Well, you're wrong.

I am right. Lithium-sulfur battery offers 10 x increase in energy density. The problem is funding for research and development. In comparison to money spend on nuclear reactors, fission and fusion those spent on the stationery battery is laughable. Chemistry of the Lithium-Sulfur battery is known, the remaining part is only technological development.Remember that current baseload storage still relays on laptop batteries. Which is complete nonsense.Once somebody draws the plans for battery the size and weight of a nuclear power plant, things will change dramatically.phys.org/news/2019-10-scientists-lithium-sulfur-battery-production-future.html

Potential is above 2000mwh/kg which allows not only base storage but also electric planes in the future.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium%E2%80%93sulfur_battery
Australia has top-ranking universities and scientists. Why not to employ them to develop stationery batteries instead of spending millions on Tesla laptop batteries to power grid? At least money better spent that building fleet of submarines and purchasing jet fighters.

O Boy kilo, that's probably the biggest faux pas you could make on an Aussie forum.

You've now lost all credibility and will be written off as a total wanker. No matter how good your science is.

No, Mark, Lord Balniel, Earl of Crawford, Earl of Belcarres, Chief of the clan Lindsay, Knight of the garter, Lord of the Queen's bedchamber, advisor to her Majesty.
No, not really, though he was/is a friend of the family. Super nice chap. MP for Hertford North at one time.

Julius Nyerere also a family friend, my Mother, British Council, helped him get started, sending him off to Uni in UK.
He is half way to becoming a Saint in the catholic church. "A servant of God." Humble decent man. In the 50s he, a black Nationalist, made my Mum Godmother to his new baby.............
.......after the ceremony, we stayed talking for a bit, then drove home, passing the future President and his family trudging along the road!
"Stop and pick him up" my Mother said. "No, would not do. I am a senior colonial servant and he a Nationalist." my Father..

It makes me weep to see money squandered. To power UK, HALF the country would have to be covered in windmills. Lovely. Or 1/4 with solar panels, and when not windy/dark, NO power.
This BS has to stop. At every level CO2 GW is rubbish.

The way it will play out in the future is that fossil fuels will continue to be used, or reduced where possible, but increases in energy use will have to be from clean energy sources.

How hard is it?

Is this "lord" Moncton?

The last paragraph above is a real issue that has huge negative environmental consequences, decrepit, logman, poida, asymuth why don't respond to that point tha kilo54 makes. Do you guys really give a toss for the environment or is it just political ideolgy because half the country covered in windmills or a 1/4 with solar is not a good environmental outcome.

Is that at 100% capacity, 24/7? What about transmission losses to like, Sydney?

You might need to read it. I was just making the point that we do not need to cover the whole country. I think it fits in Melbourne. In reality they would be spread out across the country so no transmission losses.

Of course, solar panels are not 100% efficient. As shown in Figure 2, current solar cell efficiencies, fe, are in the range of 10% to 46%. However, the current efficiency for a standard, commercial solar panel that you would place on your roof is around 16%, where it should be noted that solar panel efficiency changes with temperature, but we will not consider that effect in our calculations. The efficiency of standard commercial solar panels is increasing over time and it is possible to purchase more solar panels with efficiencies above 20%, but they are more expensive, so we will use 16% as our baseline efficiency.

There are different solutions for different locations. Scientists and corporations ( even fossil fuel companies) are working on different solutions for clean energy. Maybe kilo54's intellect could help in the UK.

On the news last night the whole roof of a house will become a solar panel in a year or so time. That solution may not be suitable for england. Once battery prices or storage devices become cheaper the household power could be off grid. The grid and base load will still be required but wont need to be increased to meet the expanding need for power.

Just wondering how many people use a phone book anymore? Its called change. Maybe its the wrong forum to ask that question

I think there is a large assumption by many that solar equipment will become vastly more efficient and storage will become a lot more cheaper. I can't see that happening the lastest & greatest panels are more expensive per watt to purchase, I sell the stuff, its not getting cheaper and it still depends on the sun shining so its not going to become vastly more efficient, in 20 or 25 years its all going into landfill and will have to be replaced. Doesn't seem like a good solution to me, unless of course you sell the stuff, like I do.
