I said it was "a perfect example of free speech" not "the perfect example" and yes we do come under scrutiny on this site but it's a lot less than mainstream media. The Australian Curriculum promotes social media and forums as a very viable and important mode of communication and we are asked to look at how censorship works on these sites. So we are also looking at how "self-moderation" works in this form of communication, which is always interesting!
I didn't abuse you Milsy, I just gave you the one thing your life is apparently lacking, your shrimp boat. And you go and get all angry????
Sheeez, are you ok? Here mate, have a cuddle too.
For me, the whole thread is a pretty interesting read.
Those showing compassion and are sad at the passing of Robin Williams aren't wrong! And those that aren't fans of his aren't wrong! ( I was never a big fan of his, but I loved the show Mork and Mindy, way back)
Those that understand his depression led to his final action aren't wrong. And those that speak out against suicide as an option aren't wrong either.
Funny how when people have differing opinions they start calling each other idiots. But the forum itself doesn't suffer for it.
The pressures of life for modern man often are too much, some people thrive on it but often burn out eventually. I don't think cave men sat around depressed because they couldn't grasp understanding the futility of life or the pressures of society to achieve success or be labeled a failure etc... no they were just focused on surviving.
Family, career, financial pressures, stress at work etc... man has evolved and our brains have become capable of so much but we often can't handle the stress as evidenced by all the people on crazy pills, smoking grass and drinking themselves into a stupor so they can forget about it all.
I imagine R/W was on crazy pills and should have been smoking grass or visa-versa. It was all coming down on him and he couldn't cope. But step back and look at it and it looks pretty weak.
His career was on a slide, no longer a leading man, doing b movies and god forbid forced to do TV.
At one time worth 130 million he lost part to two ex wives then had to sell his 26 million ranch, boo hoo.
Still worth tens of millions and living in an exclusive community but apparently the demotion was too much, boo hoo.
Health failing, beginnings of Parkinson and open heart surgery in 2009 (both probably related to drug and alcohol abuse) couldn't handle it.
Well everyone else has to go thru setbacks in life but when you are used to sitting up on a golden throne apparently the fall is too great even when you land still far above most everyone else.
oh yeah, williams story is so inspiring, pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
he was no motor city cobra

Just thought I'd let you know that I often use this forum to teach students about opinion and how it is communicated outside of the confines of media scrutiny. This thread created much discussion amongst a group of students today. I commend one and all for voicing their opinions which allowed us to explore several different ideas about contemporary issues such as depression, societal pressures and suicide. The banter and honest rhetoric is a perfect example of free speech, ironically RW was a champion exponent of this when he was at his best! Thankyou crew, it made for a lively learning environment, cheers!!
And every single student agreed that milsy was a bit of a knob?!

Interesting that Rob Schnieder is blaming the parkinson medication..
Once again just shows that we really most often have no idea what is happening
