I have a suspicion that a lot of seabreezers would dig war films. I find them fascinating. So here's a chance to share your favourites with others. I'll go first with a tie for the two I think are the best ever :
- Zulu (1964)
- The Thin Red Line (1998)
there's war movies and then there's war movies - some where (usually) Allied machine guns never miss and the Germans/Vietcong etc are the worst shots in the world - and no blood from gunshot wounds, wrong vehicles/planes for the era etc!!!!!!!!!!!! ie Chuck Norris and John Wayne films
then there's
Saving Private Ryan - best by far
Obviously not as old as you blokes
Tears of the Sun. Awesome.
For other modern stuff - Blackhawk Down, Behind Enemy Lines, Crimson Tide (not really war but....)
Worst - Hurt Locker (yeah bomb techs that are unstable really last a long time), Jarhead. Both were raved about before release also
"Where Eagles Dare"
John Mills and Clint Eastwood
saw it at the drive-in when I was just a little kid and it left a big impression on me.
-life, death, suspense, double cross/twists etc
It seemed larger than life at the time.
Saving Private Ryan was a turning point that brought new technical standards to war films and allowed subsequent film makers to make films that were more truthful about the experience of combat, but the narrative and script were too formulaic for me.
I like the old ZULU DAWN, and Saving Private Ryan is pretty good- but a lot of little technical fubars kept popping up.
Dark Blue Sky is worth chasing up.
Really impressed with Das Boot, and Letters from IWO JIMA was very well put together.
There is a lot of good movies coming out of the old Iron Curtain countries (but dont ask me to pronounce them correctly- or spell them
I really prefer movies that closely follow what actually happened- and not just a directors money maker version.
Having said all that .....Kellys Heroes is responsible for a high rate of popcorn consumption around here!
Channels 7, 9, 10 love Merryls Marauders going on the number of times it's been on the midday movie Closley followed by Von Ryan's Express
Battle of Britain was my favourite as a pup, I loved WWII air warfare.
Does the EXPENDABLES 1 & 2 count
Apocalypse Now...many many film critics rate this as the best ever. I remember it had a R rating at the box office and my dad snuck me in.
speaking of Russians - letme put something different out there if you feel like expanding your horizons a little... I saw it many years ago and it still gives me the chills...

You've got an expression on your face like you've just popped the neighbours cat!!
Just because we're sharin dirt don't mean we gonna be swapping spit an lookin longingly into each others eyes!
Ahhhh Clint at his best- saving Panama with extremely accurate gunfire, steeliest of steely squints, combat camo face paint, cigars and one liners
