All this hand wringing over sharks when in reality there is a much bigger threat out there.

The selfie now kills more people annually than sharks.

The Great White shark used to be one of the most effective killing machines on the planet—or so we thought. Nowadays, the act of taking a selfie or getting the perfect shot while traveling is proving far deadlier. The development of front-facing cameras on smartphones and growth in popularity of social media sites, such as Instagram, have created a culture that values risk-taking when seeking the perfect shot while traveling. In the hiking, traveling, backpacking and extreme sports worlds, that often means putting oneself in dangerous situations, such as slacklining between canyons, standing on cliff ledges, climbing trees, or pushing beyond boundaries.

Has anyone ever heard if anyone has been attacked whilst wearing one or can anyone verify from a personal experience or encounter?

Wifey bought me an ESDS a few years ago and I have only used it a handful of times. I tend to be in the frame of mind "she'll be right".
We all know the current state of affairs out there - is there any advantage other than a positive state of mind when wearing one?

So from almost 3k views/reads of this thread we can come to the conclusion that either not many people have seen sharks in the water or no one has had an encounter whilst wearing a SS ?

Plenty of activity this last week according to Dorsal.

My conclusion is when your numbers up , your numbers up.

Im goin surfin

What is a "shart"?

Seriously, please edit your question and correct the spelling mistake @KEARNSY.

....... The current testing from last year showed 9 of 10 times the sharks was deterred in attacking towed decoy.

Maybe a shark knows the difference between a decoy and a real human, with flesh and bones? Jusat sayin

Sorry I am just reading more of this thread. My apologies if already stated.

Not sure if your asking seriously or not but they compare towing a decoy with out shark shield active and then compare the same test with it urned on. I guess towing people would not be accepted considering the did hundreds of tows on and off..

JB,

Chill out a tad.

Getting cranky resolves nothing.

"I think Cage diving has a small place in helping educate the general public, and they are also responsible for a lot of the research and tagging of great whites, so i can see the positive also."

"I would like to see some more serious research into the effects"

"
I DONT LIKE ANYTHING THAT TEACHES A WILD ANIMAL TO COME IN FOR AN EASY FEED"

What's difficult to interpret there?

You acknowledge there is possibly a link with CD and attacks, and that more research needs doing into the possible link.

But the idea of continuing the "research", (easily done without tourists teasing sharks), is quite OK to go on without disrupting CD businesses.

My thoughts are that the sharks probably don't care too much whether there's a person in the cage, so long as they get an easy meal, so why prolong the training while there is potentially more sharks learning that people = food.

You happily speak out vehemently about some things, but strangely silent on this one.

Your argument could be put like this:

1. Jumping into a cage surrounded by wild lions enables people to learn that lions will try to kill you = positive.

2. More lions seem to be eating people, so we must look into that some day. But keep doing what we are doing.

3. People attracting lions with the prospect of a easy meal is bad. Nothing to see here....

I can't help but shake my head, and even more when you suggest that CD should be separated from other shark attack thoughts.

No offence intended BJ, anything that will help should be available on the table for discussion.

PS, if I was trolling, I would have only posted a clown smiley.

"Chill out a tad" once again i have no idea what your on. Im not upset, I've just answered and tried to explain. Obviously you are reading this upside down or something as you seem to completely miss what I'm saying so ill give up.

Ill say this one more time, go start a Anti cage diving thread..

Which part don't you get he explained it clearly.
