The last line gets him the title of the greatest, let alone his surfing.
To be able to stay at the top for nearly 20 years in any sport or work is an amazing feat.
Awesome effort and very inspiring for all.

Yep but then he'd lose all his sponsors, his family and wouldnt be able to play as well anymore.

Kelly on the other hand does it, gets paid more, lifts his performance and racks up a couple more titles beating kids less than half his age in a more dynamic, athletic way.

Travis Pastrana has/is giving it a fair nudge.

But Kelly is definitly a freak of nature.

Slater - 11 in a row

Bjorn Dunkerbeck 12 world championships, covering 3 disciplines (waves sailing and racing beign completely different, nobody has been world champions in both like 5 or 6 times as he has)

Doggie, not taking anythign away from Slater he is awesome, just saying there are others.

Did he ever decide to skip a comp and still win the world championship? Cos thats what Slater did

He won so much I would bet there was plenty of years he could have given the last couple of events a miss and still have been world champ - but I'm not gonna sit down and do the math

you have to look at the dynamics of being pro surfer, or at least like him.

they are very fit- try paddling one of his size boards

balance, finesse , ability, agility, strenght,' bravery', determination- everything a top gymnastics champion has, plus ocean awareness, wave knowledge and so on

then add a competitive drive to stay ahead of the youngest and best for decades.

even the great MR only managed four titles

who else has done that with the requirements needed to stay at the top for decades.

golfers- don't make me laugh. sure its hard to win, but these guys hang around for lifetimes.

there are plenty of other elite sportsman outside surfing calling him one of the best ever

^^^ Lacey like I said - Bjorn. He did all that you mention in wave sailing but also in racing which is completely different.
And for more world titles than Kelly (so far lol)

Slater - fully awesome. But to say he is without competition by other sportsmen .... hmmmm.......

BUT he won heaps in windsurfing, 1st world championship at 13 years old (?) and then when he took up kiting he still won 2 worlds in 1998 and 1999 ish

That says something about him as true talent
