Lookin into gettin a gopro it's $100 difference between the black and silver. Is there really that much difference? The black one in the shop is $529 then you can get them on eBay for around $400?

What's the battery life like on them?

How do you guys attatch them to your kite?

Is gopro the way to go or is there a better camera?

Depends what your looking at doing really.
The go pro black comes with the remote, and shoots 12mp photos.
The silver doesn't come with remote and does 10mp photos.
If you have a smartphone you can use that as a remote, but the small remotes actually pretty handy when you need it.

The black is definetly better quality. Especially in lower light or if its overcast. Iv got a silver and it is fine.
Gopro are definetly the best for those kind of cameras, i wouldnt get a gopro copy or anything that is a cheaper version.
Theres lots of different mounts you can get. I find the best is electrical tape. Having it on the end of a pole and taking turns of filming is defenetly the best.

Overseas they retail for $400. The ones on ebay are likely to be grey import. The risk is with warranty, you will need to send it back to the seller if anything goes wrong with it and you wouldnt want to be sending it back to Hong Kong in that case.

But if you buy from a reputable re-seller located in Australia it shouldnt be a problem. eg: Kogan.

I've just ordered a cheap copy of a gopro. One of the guys from my work bought one and the picture quality looks great. I know it's not as good as a gopro but for me it looks like a great starting point. The great thing is that this cheep camera uses the same mounts as a gopro so later on I may get a gopro anyway. I'm saving about $300 by buying a cheap copy.

Agree with the above. Nothing wrong with the cheaper camera's. Pending on how picky you are about video quality the cheaper cameras do a pretty awesome job all the same. Most videos are compressed when you upload them to you tube etc.

If your not that serious about video quality for your kiting vids get the cheaper one and save yourself some $$$.

What's the max distance u reckon the remote works with? Like if the gopro is on your kite u could turn it on/off 25 average meters back to you at the bar?

Where do u put your gopro?

Sounds pretty fiddly to me. If you just record from the start rather than stop/ start. You can just video edit after your kiting session anyway and you also could miss something unexpected. Like getting run over by a boat.

I've had my Gopro mounted in the strut of the kite and the remote works well from the ground... when it gets wet you need to point it straight at the camera but still works fine.

For the original poster, other than a few small technical differences, the big difference between Silver and Black is the remote, which costs $100 separately. I think is incredibly useful for kiting, but some people may live without if. All matter of personal preference.

yeh it's legit, big company, I've bought a few things from them.
$49 at the moment for a HD kogan branded gopro knock off. Might as well buy a few and get different angles! www.kogan.com/au/shop/cameras/action-cameras/

Read my earlier post. Kogan are grey importers. ie: They buy GoPro's O/S where they're cheaper and then re-sell them here. There's nothing wrong with that since you can trust them with warranty claims - unlike bodgy bob from ebay China.

Kogans $34 shipping on the other hand is a bit steep!

Sorry I haven't bought a video recorder from kogan, just tvs and stuff.

I've got a few mates with them, haven't seen any breakages.

You can Google "kogan hd sample" to see what sort of quality is produced.

Hmm just read the manual. 1.3 Megapixel and it only shoots in 1280 x 720 (720p). Not true HD.

You would be better off buying this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QC8020

only got 2 things to add.
1. Mounts. There are heaps available for the GoPro, very few for any other "action cam"
2. Bullet style models are a pain the the @rse to mount.

Just got a GoPro3 for my birthday. Wondering if anyone has attached the wifi remote control to the bar? Seems like it would be a good place for it - it's no bigger than a car door remote... I've seen them attached to motorcycle handlebars, wonder if the mount for that would fit...

Turn it on and record, then forget about it and enjoy your session. View it on FF on the computer if you want to edit, and write down the time stamp when something interesting happens...

I attach mine to my wrist with a Velcro strap.

I used to attach it to my harness with the keyring but was a bit worried about smashing it so switched.... Overall is easier to access and way safer

Or any non horizontal surface you have to mount on. I take it from your "except" you have proven my point exactly.

Go pros are the best hands down simple. The black records a 60 frames per second the silver records at 30 frames per second. The black is better at slow motion not jerky like the silver. And at some stage you will want to replay at 50% speed that is when it matters. I own both big difference.
