Old Surfboard rebirth into a Kiteboard.

I think you may have missed the line in my commentary which said;


"You could create a disc shaped void just under the top & bottom skin joined by a cylinder e.g. 10mm as SugarQube said,ending up with a cotton reel shape".

I altered my very rudimentary graphic to try and demonstrate the shape I was attempting to describe .

i didn't want to go and buy a board like that, but being given this board, i wondered how i could use it with a kite, with and without straps, in shallow water (just like last sunday, tide was about 1km out, wind was maxing at 8knts, i had about another 1km of ankle to shin deep flat water, then sand bars and more shallow water.).

i did not damage a fin this week, but i do agree that i need more fin surface area.

what about keeping the fins 50mm to allow shallow water use, but make them longer, like twice the length, and change the shape to a more square leading and trailing edge.

i found some aluminium chanel to use.

Sbray, i did do quite sim to your idea, but when i layed the new glass over the top, i lost the exact location of the blacks i installed. i did make a map, but i must have stuffed up somewhere.

so now i've used it a few times, and spend over 4 hours on it on sunday, i'm enjoying it alot. i've not tried it without the straps, but i can remove my front foot and move it forward which lets me go much faster.

the padding i put on the deck has a strange suction effect, all the holes are sealed against the deck so they form suction cups and stick my foot down. STRANGE FEELING!!!

now going to make some alloy fins, brb.....

I'd be a little wary of aluminium fins not only from a performance viewpoint but on the outside chance of landing or hitting them pete..one of the main benefits of the fcs /futures fin systems is that in some cases they break off at plug level when the f*&ckers hit you hopefully reducing the chance of slicing you like a stuck pig,especially when you are wet..and also minimizing the damage to your board..admire your persistence,i probably would stumped up for 2nd hand one from the buy and sell if i didn't have the collection of surfboards(10+ and a few other various incarnations ,even an old stonker epoxy )in the shed ..something to think about although i appreciate your efforts to keep us entertained !

That's because they are not required to produce lift consistently. Most of the time their angle of attack is zero, and when it is greater than zero, the drag they produce is sufficient to prevent the back of the ski going faster than the front.

Peter's kiteboard on the other hand will have lateral load most of the time, and given that his power source is a kite, and not a V8, he'll want to keep a lid on the drag component by getting lift more efficiently.
