After managing to avoid any real landyacht building for almost a year, I've finally fallen off the wagon and returned to my old self destructive ways
I had a look at what is being builtand here were the results
Yframes-steel been there twice
ski axle-been done
yframe skis-been done
big wedge bodies-done
wooden axles-done
so I decided to go the next step in the arms race.
The OTT
first problem -not enough room to fit my ageing body underneath unless it has big wheels, but Im intent on sticking to those lovely fallshaws at the back.
Problem 2 after sailing down the beach at Goolwa , I saw the need to go up to a bigger diameteraxle which could sail over the rough stuff without bending.
so i decided to go with the 50mm BQ core tubing that Ive used on my class 5.
this means that i will need longer axles to get some flex, so if the axles went all the way to the mast i might just have th room to get my legs under.
initially I did full scale drwaings on the shed floor to get my angles but soon found that that didnt work so well . on attempt no 2 I have built a steel mock frame with the axle stubsand front collar fro the steering , and the mast step welded into place the worked backwards to build the chassis. it goes something like this
The axles go into place
the rear layover/alignment get set
the axle mounts go into place
add front suspension unit, seat mount and some simple bracing
Voila!! 3.5kg of the smallest chassis Ive ever built. every angle an odd one.
This baby will either be brilliant or a complete dog
to get it out of the frame I had to cut off the excess mast pipe, and one of the rear wheel supports, but they can be welded back on if someone is building one for themselves
side axles are 3kg each and the front suspension arm will come in at 1.5kg, so despite the heavy steel in the frame the weight is looking Happy
And here you were thinking that you were cured of the dreaded "Compulsive Constructive Disorder".... oh well, keep the pics coming. Looks like an interesting idea, and I like the frame jig too
Think I will stay away from this one for this year, going to concentrate on a new class5.
Finally sourced some T6 scaff tube. Will pick it up this week and restart the project.
ground, polished, and undercoated. ready to build a seat/fuselage
would have got more done if not for our 5th day of rain in a row!!!
we usually get 5 a year.
what a waste of a long weekend.
how do you guys manage in snow/rainy,col places
Those days are reserved for sitting by the fire and watching movies.
Mind you the Doctor prefers that I should walk for an hour at least...........I think he wants me to catch Pneumonia so he can make more dollars out of me.
Ron
That is a strange looking beast, (20" wheels would have looked nice)
I will have to go with the scaff tube as it is the only one is the size required that I could source.
Diameter mm 48.40
Wall Thickness mm 4.47
Alloy 6061
Temp T6
I have also have some high tensile thin wall tube that can fit inside the scaff tube if it needs extra stiffening.
I will post pics in the class5 section when I get started again.
Cheers
Vic
Lousy weather does not make you depressed but the lack of wind does.
One can always sail in the rain!

Nikrum... Seabreeze is a window on the sport of land yacht sailing to the world, you seem to hijack each and every thread and continue to sprout your garbage, you were given you own thread for your ramblings but that's not enough.
Seabreeze has international viewing please make your comments suitable to the sport of land sailing and that audience.
Let others throughout the world enjoy the sport and STOP your garbage and ramblings... ENOUGH is ENOUGH !!!!!
People start threads to discuss, learn, impart knowledge to assist others in their journey of learning.
Nicrum,
Please consider other readers of this forum, if you want to ramble do it on your own thread. Its almost come to a point where I have lost interest in reading / imputing to some of the discussions.

Bonjour,
That's right you are read all over the world...
I'm french and like very much this construction section.
This Ott is a very good idea but always trying to avoid lateral bars,
because sitting and stand up often. Will have you enough room
between the axles ?
Good wind to everybody.
bonjour frogy. welcome to seabreeze
do you build your own yachts or just buy them ?
If I put up pictures of the new yacht , will i arrive in France for the world champs to find that every french mini yacht there is an OTT supermini
please promise youll keep it secret
after measuring everything and building a full scale mock up I SHOULD fit in the yacht by having almost no laterals.
If not there is a queue of teenage daughters wanting to lay claim to "their " new yacht
oh well here the next 2 days worth of effort.
always remeber to clamp the base and the shaping frames otherwise you will need more sawhorses to put the sawhorses on when you do the internal fibreglasssing.
you can never have enough clamps i went into a discount hardware shop and asked how much they were by the box
Ive used half the box , but therest of the box has got lost in the shed
of course there is no such thing as too many cable ties either
the inside of the nose is glassed in the usual manner, special thank you to the sun gods for this opportunity this afternoon
finally always make sure the cable ties all go the same way , which should make it easier to get a good finish
weve got a busy weekend of work happening so progress may be a tad slow.
I am being rather careful to get a reeeeealy nice finish on this yacht .
our North American associates have created some true masterpieces of late, and the quality finish bar has really been raised
you must be so proud Gizmo
Bonjour,
Met you Paul, and your family in Argentina.
Producing around 80 yachts a year alone with my brother...
Just coming back from french nationals, our team won in promosport !!!
Mini yacht races canceled because not enough pilots.
you'll have to promise not to tell anybody about our little secret weapons
todays efforts were a mixed bag of results.
after all the measuring and drawing and checking , i cut the holes for the axles to pass through the fuselage, set it up on a flat surface and i believe the expression "merde" would be the appropriate comment.
the ground clearance was all gone, and that is the rockered bit at the stern
so lots of cutting and chopping to get to the right height, then get in to make sure you can get in I think I'll fit , onwards
having tested the fit , I had to make up the newouter skin from 3 pieces to make sure it will fit. the inside of the ply will get the bad hole filled then a reinforcing layer to prevent the seat snapping( its happened before) this area of the seat will be 20mm thick when finished
many thanks to the clamp gods , once again
Geez I would have to velcro the top on, to get in and out.
Looks great. Gunmetal grey will go faster as well!!!!
No No No! We ALL know that red vehicles go faster( something to do with heating the layer of air immediately closest to vehicle surface to produce lower air density thereby allowing it to flow faster)
"Geez I would have to velcro the top on, to get in and out."
Chook, don't let all our secrets(velcro panel locks) out! [}:)]
Paul,
it would seem that you are getting quite familiar with your eventual demise
I am going to have to Build a Seat Capsule like a Burning Aberlour Bottle..
You don't got a lot of room to move in there do you?
Ron
my 5 has a cockpit not unlike a combi,or bongo van.
this technique could get passed on to the 5 so its not so ugly today i managed to finish the backfilling of the wrong holes, so its all looking Bogged and messy. i will go do some real work for a day and then come back for a sanding session before the glassing / fairing starts again
There was an offcut from the sheet of ply that id carefully planned . all my girls have build some kind of boat with dad , sooooooo.........
. my youngest and I had thoughts of a tiny little schooner that we could drp into a dam or pond, but its ended up 1m long, will be gaff rigged, bald headed, self tacking. a great chance for charlotte to do some glassing , sailmaking, lead moulding and yacht balancing , as all little girls should learn
2 days of sanding and grinding, bogging and sanding. it gets a bit frustrating , so the little schooner has been getting plenty of attention.. because its small we can get little bits done before school.
I recall that used to be the principle of the LLM
Like I said, why do we do it. Its looking good though, may be I will have to add some wings and things to the mini
Picked up the scaff tube today, I have been working on the seat on the 5 the last couple of days(filling sanding ect).
sanding,sanding,sanding.
finally happy with the bogging, but before I start painting I decided to refit the seat. just a couple of little spots to file in the holes
Ive been stressing about fitting and today when it was all together I relized there is buckets of room, its a party yacht
it all feels a bit boxy now its together
Ive got a great paint colour for the body, but you'll have to wait.
strangely, today I found myself doing detailed drawings for a friend for a new Y frame mini
