change anything tht is 50mm diameter to a 50x3mm T6 ally, thats what it should be. even 50x5 ally is too heavy for a yacht with this much bracing.
. Im starting to see how it has a big steel mast base. can this be replaced with something ligher that will fit your masts. 60x10mm is too over the top.
We'll get there
The question of no vang?
Landyacht sail control is quite different than water yachts.
The windspeeds that landyacht sails need to work in are from 10km/h to 100km/h+
where water yacht and sail board sails have a limited wind speed use band.
Have a read of this site it exlains the concept....
www.sailrite.com/High-Speed-Sails
The down haul system flattens the sail and this then gives a much better sail for high speed.
When the sheet rope is slackened the boom rises slightly and this gives a fuller sail and thus the sail has less speed and MORE power, for starting, soft surfaces, turns etc.
Have a close look the pic of Wildfire and the down haul and main sheet system.. By sheeting in it pulls the boom in and down flattening the sail.
The "Pacific Magic" yachts use a centre sheeting system that does a similar thing.
By using a vang as in a water yacht you will limit the landyacht speed by fixing the sail shape to a certain windspeed.
G'day Aga,
No wonder you thought the yacht was heavy..
It must have had an extensive rebuild at some stage, as the original chassis is built with 48x4.47 t6 aluminium scaffold tube & weighed about 60 kg. with the racing seat (even lighter with the seat on that yacht). There was no mast base, the mast had a bolt through the base of the mast & a bolt through the clamp on the mast.
The only steel tubes were the upper & lower 'a' frames & steering rod.
Cheers, Bill
Hi Bill,
I kind a guessed the yacht was not in origonal condition.
After 18 odd years as a hire toy: acidents / corosion / this-will-keep-it-rolling-handymen etc.
I like the idea of lossing the mast foot altogether. A linch pined bolt at the keel bracket would be quick & easy (just how I like it) and allow the yacht to be more transportable, on two wheels without a mast foot it would easily fit the walking track to Bucassia beach.
60kg - with ally mast will be my target
Thanks Bill
aga
I came accross a peice of Dia 25X3mm ally and replaced the heavy galv. back brace: back to the scales ; 55Kg ready to sail
The path up and down to our best local beach;Bucassia, at 55Kg it's easy enough for 2 people.
She FLIES
the Mrs on the "Faze5" with Jesse on his yacht
PS:
The next question is which yacht is faster ?.......
Then get the slower yacht up to match the speed of the faster yacht... then repeat....
good to see the whole family sailing. Perhaps Mrs Agamackay could be awarded her own avatar as the official Bucasia beach test pilot. welcome aboard, remember not to take it as seriously as the boys
dont throw that shattered mast away, it will be fine for a boom when you build a mini size yacht.
I had the same problem with masts on my wind flyer It was overcome by inserting the top half of another mast into the bottom of the sailing mast, no more breakages after that.
Dam that is a long fixed mast holder.
