I've spent a few weekends sailing in Sydney recently. One thing I notice is that while most boats these days are big and shiny, late in the afternoons when the huge stinkboats have gone home, one sees scruffy old production yachts of 25 feet or so heading out. Almost all of them look rough. Most are not well sailed. They seem to be used by guys about 40-50, normally sailing alone, who don't look particularly affluent.
I've got a suspicion that these guys would not have thought they could have afforded a boat a while back, but now that mooring minders are going cheap as chips they have been able to afford their dreams. They may never have sailed, but may have spent decades wishing they could. Now those boats are getting used, and their new owners (if that's what's happening) are realising their dreams. It's wonderful, if true.
Well that describes me lol.. Mid fifties never sailed lol looking for an old boat.. (probably going to stay a dream but heck it's fun)
50 must be the magic number. Sailed once or twice 25 years ago. It's like riding a bike right? :) now fortunately can think about buying a cheap yacht, and potentially having the time to take it out every so often.

Lovely boat if you have lots of friends....
I looked at that back in 2011. At that time the asking price was $335,000 "Firm". Times change....
"The Dr" has been a stalwart on the river (and beyond) for as long as I can remember - at least 35 years. Always in absolutely immaculate condition, and despite her conservative rig, still extremely quick. At that price shes being given away, and they do cruise/deliver short handed. I hope she stays local.
Dr Who and Starlight Express have got to be in the top 10 of Laurie D's designs.......he the most naturally gifted yacht designer ever..........and the builder McGaffin did them solid to last so long and for a lot longer..............

Hard chine with good volume aft certainly making the most of volume for length but steel rather than lead ballast is off putting.

Price: $28,000
That is a Brit built boat with a Mk 1 rig. If any yacht is bullet proof (60 knot bullets) it has to be one of them.
If it is as good as it looks with newish sail and rig it could be worth a punt.
Subtract what she needs from the price and you might get it for $20k.
Fifty years on and a good S&S 34 is still relevant.

This is the SS34 Yemaya that sailed out from San Francisco by Linda a bit over 12 months ago. This is an Aquafibre hull from the same mould as Edward Heath's "Morning Cloud". The interior is exactly the same. These were the original SS34 mass produced boats and are considerably lighter than the Australian versions and all had keel stepped masts.
The Boat's Story (from Linda Pasquariello 2013) Lina II (hull 63) was built for M. Dentraygues of France by Auqafibre (U.K)in 1970. At some point she was sold to Jean Paul Lambrechts of Nieuport Belgium. He sailed her via the Panama Canal and arrived in San Francisco in 1986. She was purchased by Pacific Marine Foundation of Bellingham W.A in April 2003. Then she was purchased by Simon Golledge in 2003 and moved to Los Angeles. In 2012 I purchased Lina II and renamed her Yemaya. I moved her back to San Francisco to refit her and get ready to take her on a singlehanded voyage of the world.
Full details here. www.ss34.org/index.php/directory/linaii/
In my opinion these are the pick of the SS34's and if I didn't have a very capable yacht already this would be my choice. Photo is Linda sailing off Hawaii.
Supposedly a Holland 25......I can't see it. Must be a one off 1/4 tonner someone designed and built.

Yeah , knew the previous owner who looks after all his boats well. I would have liked to have bought it a couple of years ago when he sold it, but didn't have time for it, still don't unfortunately. Nice boat, draft a tad too deep for me, but wouldn't be a deal-breaker.

Has been for sale for probably 18 months. Broker was highly arrogant about making any kind of offer when it was $129,000. Said the owner wouldn't take a cent less........
Nice boat for Tassie waters with a beautiful canoe stern;

Looking at the stern area more indicates it may well be a Davidson Black Fun quarter tonner. So potentially a better club racing boat than the Holland 25.
