If I were still in the market I couldnt fly down quick enough to have a look at this. The new triple spreader mast and sails alone are probably worth the asking price and there is a lead keel to boot.

Is this a good post covid price as in they hold their value well?

I wouldn't want to be the foredeck crew handling MH genoas in a sail change - too old for that - but as a cruiser with a furling jib (maybe set up as a cutter), and some cockpit shelter, she would make a great performance cruiser.

I have watched this boat sailing past me when I was on a mooring in Kogarah Bay. They do sail well!

Would better deals be found privately given the fact you have a middle-man so to speak with a broker?

The jarkan 42 in tassie isted above, I'm not sure if priced cheaply or just priced accordingly. I want to put an offer of 60k in but not sure if this is an insult or not

Doesn't seem that private sales are necessarily better value as there are probably equally many owners that have over inflated ideas of their boats worth as under and most would be looking to gain most of the agents premium themselves. The big advantage in buying from an owner is that you can actually talk to them and discuss any issues with the boat. I am always highly suspicious of boats sold through agents. Its as if the owner is hiding something and doesn't want to be quized about it.

I don't think that offer would be an insult. You can always negotiate up but not down. I guess an owner might take the view however that you need to look at the boat first before your offer may be taken seriously. People's opinions vary wildly about what boats are worth what particularly boats which werent produced in any volume. As has been pointed out it needs a furler to make it a viable cruising boat and they're worth a few bucks. It's hard to know what a boat is really worth until you have gone over it yourself. It also looks like it needs the deck and coach house painted which isn't a small job but quite manageable for an enthusiastic new owner.
Have you looked at the boat yet and have you got a way to get it home?

Aren't able to look currently was just going to make offer as I'm looking for a marina to liveaboard in Tassie and this would be a step on step off scenario which would suit well. My thoughts were new mast and history with the boat would hold a good resell factor too

Sounds like a plan. Make the offer . If accepted just make sure the contract is the usual one with subject to survey and maybe inspection and sea trial and you are protected.

When I first saw the ad I thought it was the Jarkan 36 a friend of mine built. He had the hull and deck moulded by Jarkan and he fitted it out himself to an extremely high standard. The timber work was much better than that one. The hull was still in the mould when the bushfire went through parts of Huskisson and destroyed the factory but the hull outside was fine. Unfortunately he passed away from cancer not long after the launch and the family sold the boat on for a lot of money. It was fully fitted out with watermakers etc. He had built several serious cruising yachts and this was to be the best. The deckhouse layout was chosen because most of his cruising was in North Queensland.
If I was looking for a similar sized boat for Tasmania it would be one of these. yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/wauquiez-centurion-36/289881
There is one close to me and they are nicely built.

Ramona, are you going a bit soft?...this is one of quite a number of wheel steered yachts you have recommended recently, not to mention your own.

Wheel steering is great with the Aries self steering gear. Not so good for steering in light winds. If I had a choice it would always be a tiller!

Reminds me of when I was 25 over 40 years ago looking at hull and deck prices because I couldn't afford a finished boat 30 + ft. Eventually bought a sail away Hutton 28 and fitted an outboard (which I notice it still has today).

New prices are so frightening today that I would still struggle to afford the boats I would like even though I have lots more money. At least I can buy the dream boats of my youth even though they are now 40 years old. No such option back then unless you wanted a timber boat.

It looks roomy and a solid build. What is core balsa fibreglass like for strength go? Would it be a handful to sail? A very different looking Ketch?
The forward mast is very close to the bow.
Where does it get the name Cat rigged?
It obviously doesn't have a Genoa?
Would you still get the forward thrust, without a Genoa?
It looks like a lot of Work and money to be spent.
A project the owner couldn't complete in 17 years!
No mention of an engine?

A friend of mine owned one for years. He used to spend 6 months of the year in the Whitsundays. He would sail from the South Coast of NSW solo and he raved about how good it was to sail. He eventually built a large catamaran and moved North permanently. He went with the catamaran because of the deck space for harbour living.
Balsa core sandwich would be exceptionally strong. The catamaran he built was foam sandwich with epoxy. Also very strong.

Interesting and what a Lifestyle! There are some talented people around. A top guy I know.that lives by the south coast of Adelaide, built a large trimaran and trailer in his backyard. He then drove to Queensland and spent 6 months exploring the Whitsundays and drove home.He then built a large catamaran, again in his backyard. He has done some work for me and I have seen his work at the squadron, where he converted a 100ft racing boat into a cruiser.
Built a new cabin top and 2 engine housings.and internal walls. The work was carried out over a 6 week period, then it went back to Melbourne to be fitted out and upholstered. The owner, from Adelaide had a well paid job in the mining industry.

Yeah pretty cool. I like the idea of aluminium boats but I don't understand them well enough to be confident in buying one. Don't understand things like internal condensation and foam insulation ... quite apart from the obvious problems of how you isolate or bolt up necessarily steel items like engines and prop shaft bearings.

Bit weird that the side sun covers for the windows don't come down all the way.

Never heard of that site before. How did you find that one?

This is my mates alloy Cole. It now has an alloy cabin welded on and all the stanchions, pushpit and pulpit are now welded alloy. Some timber lining in the cabin section. No condensation. Always cool and very quiet below.

Looks like quick boat in light/moderate conditions. Was the footage taken from a drone, operated from a motor boat close by?
