Very concise advert, and very inexact............good value depending on the hull / keel / rudder structural integrity and diesel condition and sails...

I like it.
I like it too. That's a no-bull**** price.

Seems to be a project
www.afloat.com.au/listing/hick-30-project-or-cheap-sailing/
Owned by a very good dinghy sailor, and a quick hull for a boat of that (medium light) displacement. I did a Hobart on her hull sister eons ago. The only thing that worries me is the engine location, which in a boat that size seems to muck up the interior. She could be an excellent buy; I used to know her owner and I don't think he is the sort of guy to let a boat deteriorate seriously, although the ad says he has moved back to his home state and had to leave the boat.
I just recalled and confirmed with a mate that he finished the original boat in his backyard from a hull+deck+ cabin also keel and rudder kit - these built by Robert Hick in Melb and trucked up here. Strip plank cedar with epoxy resin and probably s glass laminates each side. Top yacht but definitely a project now.

Says fiberglass but forepeak doesn't look it.
Chain plates a long way inboard so sheeting angle would be good.
Yeah whole rig looks swept. Looks very much like cedar strip all the way round which is great too.
Good value Nicholson 32.

Sad that he thinks he needs to encourage illegal living aboard to sell it. Also calls into question it's seaworthiness.

The Nicholson 32 is about the most seaworthy yacht on the planet!

Sure but no yacht is seaworthy when it's been let go for years. Just saying it's a bit sad he felt the need to include that last sentence. In my mind it conjures up images of derelict hulks that never move of which there are quite a few in pittwater.
This looks pretty good value on Facebook marketplace with new engine 2017 New furler and Rigging 2022 and all new hatches and windows. Suspect it won't last long.
Not wanting to state the Cybil Fawlty bleeding obvious but the owner surely is going to lose more than his shirt on this sale. 80fter extended to 100 and didn't sail near to the expectations still good on the team for the effort

Those YouTubers with the cracked Beneteau floors and keel would like it :-).
Any thoughts on these two as coastal cruisers?

The Pion is very far ahead of the Whiting 32 in my humble opinion. I assume the Pion has shaft drive not sail drive diesel. The build strength and integrity would be far better. If you want to PM me I can explain more so as not to seem biased against the Whiting.
The Pion has my vote too. You could almost mistake it for a Defiance. I like the mast stepped well back as it is which will make her very much a headsail powered yacht. Inner forestay as well to put a blade sail on.
The Pion is great value, and fulfills function for coastal cruising, being solid, and safe, and would not frighten the family . Really like keel stepped mast, set back ,as Cisco explains . She sits in the water .
The Whiting is a boy"s dayboat - fun,but could scare family,as bounces around, and then beyond being solo sailed . Sits on the water.
If it was built in Aust seems like early models were by Binks later models by Yacht Craft Redwood Park . Ok I see shaft drive and folding prop. Is the diesel 1 or 2 cylinders some of the early Kubota/ Nanni diesels around that size could have been 1 cyl not 2 as later models
The Pion would be my choice. I looked at them carefully years ago and it would come down to a close choice between a Pion and a Defiance. I ended up with a Currawong 30 because it was much cheaper at the time. There is a Mk 1 moored about 100 metres from my mooring. The Mk1 had a cast iron keel and I'm fairly confident the Mk 2 had lead. This boat has a keel stepped mast and it appears to be a heavier section than my neighbour. I would speculate because the keel stepped mast is a mark 2 with a lead keel.
Two fuel injectors makes it a two cylinder engine.
Pions are great boats. Quite a few built by Mander Marine in Adelaide from memory - sometimes as owner finished hull-and-deck kits. I crew-hopped between a Pion 30 and a Duncanson 34, racing out of the RSAYS in the late 80's early 90's. I was always surprised at how big the Pion felt inside compared to the longer Duncanson. Also seemed like a really secure feeling cockpit.
Thanks everyone, pion seems to get a few votes.
What about the age of them is 74 pushing it?
Given the age anything I should be looking for when inspecting?
Anyone else recommend any others NSW based 10 to 25k range.
Mainly looking at sailing from Port hacking to Pittwater and Sydney harbour.
1974 build is not pushing it as long as the yacht was a design type and length that you are after and was built solid in the first place and has none or little osmosis which can be easily corrected. And has been suitably maintained since its launching including standing rigging for insurance purposes..........
Of course the whole yacht is the hull (and keel and rudder), decks, cabin, diesel, shaft drive type, propeller and shaft and p bracket, mast, boom, stanchions and lifelines, sails, other.
So your most recent post of 10 to 25k range has blown the possibilities wide open................are you after a single handed cruiser, what is your length limit, do you need a cruiser / racer or cruiser? How much money have you put aside after the initial purchase for repairs / refurbishments / sails / diesel service / slipping .............and annual maintenance budget........................
If you only want to go from PH to SH to PW and back a 30fter would be perfect.
But please give some more information and we can comment more exactly and constructively / helpfully. What headroom do you need............are you after tiller steering or wheel steering ( unusual in a 30fter)............
Anything you should be inspecting - would be everything...............google a small yacht survey report template. What has been your prior sailing experience?
1974 - They built them properly in those days - materials were cheap = no skimping !!
Owner of 1974 Contessa - solid as !
Great thanks Planter yes I fully realise all that and totally agree as regards the Cole Contessa 25. But dtrainator has opened up a whole new basket of potential ~30ft yachts with his 25k budget if that is his purchase budget. If it his purchase and year 1,2,3 budget then it becomes more difficult.
Yes looking at 28/30ft if I can but open to smaller, looking at cruiser not racer more as a weekender, six foot ideal internal and easy to sail with 2 people.
Looking at Halvorsen, East Coast, Caviler, Pion so far.
Had a fairly big power boat on a mooring so fine with having it dived on, hauled out yearly if needed and serviced etc.
Happy to do some work but looking for something clean just debating on which components we want to tackle over time in maintenance but likely will do rigging over time as needed and other things as needed but looking for something that can be used and improved as needed.
