OK technically this boat is not for sale it's free!

www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1392615761366194/?ref=saved&referral_code=null

I posted it because we had the same thing happen here a couple of weeks ago but in the case of the local boat, it sank tied up to the wharf. If you own a steel yacht you have to monitor its condition very regularly.

A free steel boat could be quite expensive to dispose of. I knew a guy who said chopping it up cost more than scrap value.

Don't you just tow it to India and run it up the beach? Sure I saw that on YouTube.

In NSW you just ignore it and eventually the MSB removes it at taxpayers expense! The worse case scenario is to have the boat on the slips and it gets condemned. Then you are paying for a crane then a lowloader to cart it away!

I know of five people who have boat steel boats and have had to dispose of them due to the steel rotting away. One of the guys was working every weekend on his boat and still couldn't keep up with the rust corrosion !

I couldn't keep up with the corrosion on this one so she got scrapped.

Bought her sitting on a mooring in the Tweed and got her craned out and trucked home to Beenleigh area. Sat her in the back yard with dreams of doing her up and going sailing. Had been quite successful in making money on some smaller boats and this was the next step.

The rust just took off and between working and raising a family I just could not keep up with the corrosion. A few years later I sold all the components, engine, steering, rig sails etc and pulled the acro's out of one side and let her drop onto the lawn, then I cut her into chunks with a plasma. Got about $200 for all the steel and about $2000 for the lead. Between buying and selling I nearly broke even but spent many weekends trying to restore her then many more just trying to get rid of her.

I still have a few bits of her, got her ships bell and some winches. I have been meaning to dig them out and start a free stuff thread in the sailing forum that has worked well on other forums on SB. Watch this space if you need a couple free (old style) winches.

ps. I was told she was an Alan Buchanan design when I bought her but I think that is incorrect. I believe she was built in Brookvale/Manly area around 1966 and was one of two built at the same time.

Could be interesting for the right person .

Yes, your spot on... Nice sleek boat..
Great cruising the Whitsunday's, but not too far offshore.. Well spotted..Cheers

Galatea delivered back from clipper Cup in the early 80s with a cyclone along the way

Did the '93 Melbourne to Hobart on an S111. One of only a handful to finish the race that year. Great boat offshore, not just a Whitsundays cruiser

Why not?????

Why not what????? Did you read the quoted thread?

The ad's no longer up and I couldn't find anything relevant elsewhere. Our own boat's not too dissimilar and I can't see why it or the S111 isn't OK for the Whitsundays; one of the times I went up there it was on a vaguely similar style of boat and it was fine.

This one has had a price drop. Outboard is way too big but the rest is good value even if no interior.

The comment I was responding to suggested that island hopping was all a S111 was good for, "not too far offshore". I said the design is great offshore, and was not _just_ a Whitsundays cruiser.

Yes, and it strikes me that as long as you don't thrash the s**t out of it, you'll sell it for not much less than you pay for it - rather than a 30K boat that you'd need to put 20K into just to sell it on again.

www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/church-point/sail-boats/euro-sailing-boat-similar-to-laser/1305633263

It's a "Europe" not a "Euro" and it was the womens olympic single hander before the Laser radial got in on the act.

I've sailed one and they're absolutely fantastic, light, carbon mast, easy to pull up the beach.

Anyone looking for a fun boat for a person under 70 kilos to actually enjoy sailing around could not do better than this for 800 bucks! So much better than a laser in all respects except the ability to fleet race.

Somewhere in sailing anarchy there is long discussion about a set of yachts that I think includes this boat. There is much debate about who is the actual designer and which boat is what. The look like great yachts that are still competitive after 30 years.

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

The ad says it's a skiff. There's nothing remotely like a skiff in the Europe's heritage. The idea that people should call dinghies "skiffs" because skiffs are cool or better is such complete BS. It's against historical truth and it ignores the fact that the lightweight dinghies that had nothing to do with skiffs (Cherubs, NS14s, Moths, Int 14s, etc etc etc) actually had more to do with creating the modern racing dinghy than skiffs did, as did the traditional northern hemisphere dinghies. It's simplistic marketing crap run mad.

'Scuse the rant but surely truth must trump BS.

The Europe dinghy is just a British International Moth. The Brits favoured skiff moths while Australians preferred scows. When the Olympic committee wanted a single hander for women they selected the design of the current skiff moth and froze the design. Moths are normally a development class but the Europe became a one design class. It did change from a round alloy mast to a round carbonfibre mast though!

Actually there are bugger all of them in Britain, when we picked one up (in about 2005) it was a rarity.

Wikipedia says they were designed by a Belgian (in 1960) and yes, as you say, they measure(d) as a Moth. They really do look like a little Finn - funny that that's what you ended up with.

If you're tall they're not your boat. The boom is veeeeeeeeeery low - and very heavy. Think Laser with max kicker, but lower...

Current owners have held it for a fairly short time:

Actually it's a Belgian design, and it became a one design around 1963 in reaction to the pre-wing Moths like Duflos designs, which look a lot like the Europe but were more Veed and therefore too tippy for many sailors. It's still doing very well in Europe but lots of the smaller countries voted it out of the Games due to the expense. For the 2000 Games wing masts were allowed but they tried to make the class rules so tight that everyone bought the same carbon mast, so the Brits bought a one tonne block of alloy, milled it down to make the mandrel for their own carbon mast that could fit within the rules, and then sanded the spar from the inside. Shirley Robertson used it to win the gold but if I recall correctly the cost was about $100,000. According to the next owner (Laura Baldwin, 2004 Olympic rep for the UK writing on the class FB page) even used it sold for the equivalent of $28,000 today!

Not surprisingly the Laser Radial replaced it in '08.

I could not believe that write-up! Retired with an autopilot failure! Tiller steered SS34 without an Aries/Fleming/Monitor. They could have even sailed the rest of the way with a nice piece of shock cord!
That hard top needs to go it's an eyesore. The interior is not all that bad if you ignore the rough fibreglass work. Some lengths of Bunnings garden Merbau strips varnished would add to the ambience. There is plenty of room for a nice quarter berth.

My thoughts exactly on not using a Windvane!!
And yes, it could have a better looking dodger.
Add some nice timber to the interior and it would transform the boat.
A huge amount of money has been spent, for someone to step on and go circumnavigating..
A bargain!!

Might be a bargain for the right person but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes quite cheaply although we will probably never know.
A lot of those additions on the outside like the Dodger and the winch platforms and other things would result in a total eyesore finish if removed.
Presume it wasn't Golden Globe race that is referred to as it doesn't have a full keel yet it does have full modern instruments and a couple of auto pilots but no wind vane.
Wife would love the toilet seat although amateurs would like the instructions written all around the head. Think the seller would be well advised to spend 50 bucks and put a toilet seat on it. I'm a bit head centric ATM having just installed an electric one on my TS :).
