Andy was going so well. Sailing across the Pacific in the trade winds seems a lot nicer sail than around Cape Horn against the wind. Maybe he could send one of us a postcard from Bora Bora.
Tough decision, but certainly the correct one, I'd hate to have to self steer for a trip half way around the world, at least now he can relax and just enjoy sailing home, whilst stopping along the way for pizza and beer
My understanding of making a new record for this is that it must be nonstop (ie no landfalls) and unassisted.
Posts above are suggesting otherwise. Did I miss something??
Doing it single handed with landfalls and assistance is still a great achievement and in my opinion more noteworthy than Sailing La Vagabonde.

He will not get a record once he gets outside assistance which includes going alongside or using a mooring. He can anchor and fix it with what he has onboard and resume the record attempt. If he uses anything not on the boat no record.
Sailing an S&S34 from Sydney to the Caribbean solo non stop is a fantastic personal achievement. My suggestion if he wanted it would be fix the problems and continue the record route. He still gets to have completed a solo circumnavigation, just not unassisted. He would get to round the two southern capes.
Unfortunately Andy made the decision last week to pull out of his record attempt and head to St Lucia to repair his boat then sail home via the Panama Canal. Bloody great effort and he will still have sailed around the world
Info for Cisco.
Hat's off to him, he may not have set any record but he did a very tough and very long upwind passage. That's something many sailors will never do...
Hi seabreezers!! internet finally! Well it's nice to be wearing clean underpants. And great to have internet. The wind generator exploded behind King Island and the fleet one satellite system hasn't worked since then. It was a tough call to end the record attempt but it would have been foolhardy to carry on.
An awesome sail, really inspiring. I hope you have great fun completing the circumnavigation in the trade winds across the Pacific.
Great effort.
Look on the bright side if you had to end your quest. The Bahamas is better that most places to stop over...
Plus you now have a leisurely sail across the Pacific.
Good to hear you and the boat are sort of back, plus new reg grundies also is a bonus.
So what is the plan now, a few months r+r in the tropics before coming back?
What a contrast...
Uphill slog in the Southern Ocean/Indian Ocean and now tradewind sailing between islands.
Andy!! Antigua Classics start on April 20 and Antigua Race week start April 27. St Lucia to Antigua 196nm.
Just sayin,

Ha ha I'm not allowed to dilly dally on the way home plus my wife said I could buy a bigger boat when I get home!!!!!
Hi Andy, congratulations on what you've achieved. Listened to your comments on the podcast re. bigger boat. Do you have any thoughts on what style/size of boat for the next one?
Really good podcast Andy! and well sailed.
thanks for the link gl.
Andy you mention you may see if you can do an interview or two with other sailors...Webb Chiles is in St Lucia, on his Moore 24, three stops since NZ, Darwin, Durban and St Helena.

Yeah it was pretty funny, as soon as I got permission I was on the internet straight away. Didn't take me long to find my dream boat. ........
Hi Andy,
I think it is amazing that a major sailing record like this exists that can be done in boat that is no better than what is owned by many of the members on this forum. It seems you have demonstrated that it possible to achieve the record within the resources available to the average sailor.
Do you think the S&S 34 is a good boat for the sub 40' westerly circumnavigation record ? Are there better alternatives ?
Andrew
