Hi Andy, congratulations on what you've achieved. Listened to your comments on the podcast re. bigger boat. Do you have any thoughts on what style/size of boat for the next one?
Yeah it was pretty funny, as soon as I got permission I was on the internet straight away. Didn't take me long to find my dream boat. ........
Hi Andy,
I think it is amazing that a major sailing record like this exists that can be done in boat that is no better than what is owned by many of the members on this forum. It seems you have demonstrated that it possible to achieve the record within the resources available to the average sailor.
Do you think the S&S 34 is a good boat for the sub 40' westerly circumnavigation record ? Are there better alternatives ?
Andrew
Yeah I think its an ideal boat to set the record, definitely the boat performed really well from Bass Strait all the way to Cape Agulhas, over 2 months into the wind, which is a pretty good test of a boat. down wind all the way in the Atlantic was fun and easy sailing.
Of course once the record is set you'll need a state of the art 40footer to break it. But as a boat to sail single handed around the world on a budget a boat like the S and S 34 has to be at the top of the list.
Yeah Claverton it should be a bit of fun as well as having room for a few others in relative comfort

Yes, fantastic effort indeed!
Andy, you mentioned in one of David's podcasts about borrowing Jessica's idea of using close cell foam as a cabin top headliner. I have a similar problem in that the vinyl is pretty tatty and pealing off. I had a go at replacing with more vinyl but the exercise was a fraught with difficulty & results weren't good. Closed cell foam might be a much better solution.
Did you end up using this stuff? If so what type of foam did you use and how did you attach it? I found this supplier in Sydney which looks to have a pretty good range:

Andy , did she who must be obeyed tell you to get moving, and pick up some groceries on the way home ?????? !!
