Withthe BOP starting this week-end look out for our young Aussies doing their first overseas race.
Here is a shot of Michael Booth who finished 10th in the sprint race at Huntington Beach last weekend. Kai Bates was also in the consolation final. These two youngsters beat a slew of established paddlers. Michael finished about 15th in the distance. Amazingly he has only had about 20 paddles on a Stand Up.
Who else is doing their first overseas race???

What's michaels background paddle sports yeah? Bright future ahead

how can you split jake connor kai danny and Travis.. Plus another dozen dark horses will be an epic battle I reckon a lucky wave at the right time for one person will only be the diference in winning. Connor somehow manages to catch that bump that the others miss time and time again.. Will be interesting

Does that mean Boothy could be 2nd at the BOP seeing as he was just behind Jakey at Huntington?

If we are starting predictions here are mine,

1st Danny
2nd Connor
3rd Mo
4th Kai
5th Zane

1st Annabell
2nd Karla
3rd Fiona
4th Jenny
5th Candice

Good luck to all the Aussies heading over.

Haha if Boothy can keep pace with Jake , then yep he will be a good chance of winning as well. Will be interesting on the girls side , I rekon if their is surf Karla will beat Annabel , and Angie will be right up their too. And don't forget Sondra. I just hope it is an Aussie that wins.

Yes Surf background. Clubbies/ocean Ski and Sprint kayak.
Just a case of intense technique /skills sessions.

Conner is very focused at the moment. At Huntington Beach he was on the line straight after his last race, even though he may not race for an hour. Just sat there watching ever heat going out. Reminded me of Trevor Hendy before a major final..... Thats why he will be hard to beat.

Danny, Conner , Kai will be hard to beat. If Jake gets his trademark start he will go with them. (and Kai will be hungry for the win) Good thing now is jake can come back from 30 meters behind.

Boothy did well to stay with Jake at Huntington. Just got to do it FOR LONGER.

I reckon dewsy will be top five with a chance of top spot if he stays switched on. Little grommy is paddling so strong this year.

Surf bigger today and its flat everywhere, so with the increase of swell tomorrow and Saturday its going to be a very interesting race.
A very hard thumping shore break has seen over 10 boards snapped in the last two days. Karla Gilbert is off getting her's fixed after creasing the Naish this morning.

The change-over area has more of a wave breaking out further but not the shore dump effect. But there is a lot of water moving around out there.
I wouldn't be surprised to see many not handle the conditions

Wow could be some real carnage , I wonder what the rule is with a broken board. Are you allowed a spare board if yours gets snapped in the shorey?

Agree post production looks cool with all the editing afterwards but it's not that hard and expensive to run a live feed the amount of money they would make with such a large scale event it would be cost effective and a smart way to grow the event for sponsors.. I watch all the ASP surfing tour events via the websites live feeds and they are great.

Its not just the "now" its the "I want to feel a part of it" factor. Some edited glossed up built for TV production looses the actual vibe IMO. Look at the cheesy promo highlights the waterman league do for the surf and race "world series" It glosses over and focuses on what and who THEY want us to see.

Totally. Very few sports have any relevance or must-see interest a day after the event. And our sport (the racing part) is just not dynamic enough to carry a highlights package.

4,5,6 ft waves with 100 12'6 boards out there!!!!!!!

snapper rocks on a crowded day is going to seem like a picnic compared to what's going to go down if the surf holds

Oh the surf is only getting bigger! Its gonna be a case of survival lol. I have 2 leggies systems incase one fails.
No leggie No pfd then No race and they will DQ us.
Its gonna be gnarly but fun of course.
Im picking aussies to kill it!!
The guys heats are stacked with over 100 in each heat!! Half will go thru to final.
Girls is straight out final this year.
This is all just hoping my board makes it thru the race too hahaha. I predict ALOT of broken boards tomorrow.
It will be great to finally get to watch the guys race too :)
Good night all.

Thanks. There's no live video feed anywhere at all? Is it that the best we are gonna get is a few still pics and tweet-style updates from SUPRacer (not that I'm knocking that in the absence of anything else, but I was hoping at least for "one man and his webcam on the beach" type coverage).

It really sucks that Andre and SupConnect can't do live broadcasts any more. Money and politics are really putting the quash on the SUP ohana. At least there's the Surfline cam and the SupRacer blog. Hard to tell from a panning camera, but the crowd looks super small. The tide's dropping and there's definitely some serious carnage. FYI, deep SW swells like the one we are getting right now are super inconsistent with long lulls. A lot of island shadowing from San Clemente and Catalina is also knocking down the OC size.
