Great result for SUPSA - excellent numbers. It just goes to show when you organise a race with maximum competitors interests in mind, taking account of the conditions and the board lengths that most people have and want to race with, then you attract a full field.

Results!!!!! please!! i hear Rhino Keck took out open men 14 on a Hobie Raw.... Go sunny coasters!

Ye He did
Unfortunately no second or third.
They were to scared to race him.

Ahahahahah

With all the whining about 12'6 boards being so bad for the sport I thought open 14 would be the biggest class.

I am an idiot for taking anything written on seabreeze to be even remotely close to the truth!

Maybe next time the entrants list can be posted so I don't drive 6hrs to race myself?

Good fun event all the same!! Great work Peasey and supsa.

it was the biggest class, but most went with the age group thing and left you to race yourself- kinda funny in away because i didn't have a good day but the 50 to 54 mens 14' class was pretty hot, well as hot as it gets for 50 plus. if i went open i would have got second

cheers

Hey at least you showed up. And had a good race too.
Maybe bring the 12'6 next time or wait another 15 years or so to hit masters....

You got to love it when the 50-54 class is "pretty hot"
The age group thing is a great concept as well as the wave start. Not being a local I had no idea who I was racing in my age division until the finish. It was great to have Jacko, Jake and Beau come past due to their later start, instead of taking off and never seeing them which is normally what happens.

Great course , catered for everyone I doubt we would have seen the same numbers if it was an ocean race!Having a few events that cater for everyone is the tickett. Also thanks for the nice lady who grabbed my hat when i lost my board < would have been shatterd to loose my favourite SUPSA trucker cap.(always wear a leggie stupid)Great fun and at times a challenging courseJust ask my back , and shoulders , and legs

One big dissapointment , nooooo beeeeer But we know why , stupid licencing laws.

I had a great time, best race I have been in I reckon. Long enough to be challenging, tactical on your line to work out where the tide was running against you the least and which line to take around the surf buoy to make the most of the waves and creek runners on the way back.

Good for spectators as well as you went past them a few times. My mum got some good pics of the race from the tents, I'll post em later if I get a chance. Good vibe at the event as well.

my maths must be different to yours, going by Ali's stats???? I guess you could still call it the biggest class, there is no doubting a 14' board is bigger than a 12.6' board

your right. maybe i thought they all looked like 14'ers. elite and 30 to 39 and 40 to 49 had the 12'6 numbers. the elite 'money' was on the 12'6 class. age groups over the above stated started swinging to the 14's including the 30 to 39 group- more so in the mens.

just like to give the heads up to ali for her hard work sorting out the results - a thankless job at best

I'm guessing Mark's talking about in his age group! 14' was the biggest class for the 40-40 Men and the 50-54 Men.

But yes 12'6" was the biggest overall! (But only due to the elite paddlers).

I think the stats really show how important it is to keep the option of both board classes in as many events as possible to cater for everyone!

The majority of age-group paddlers only have 1 board, so don't have a choice of what to paddle when it comes to race day. These paddlers choice of board purchase is generally going to be aligned with what they will enjoy paddling the most on a day to day basis, not on what size board they need to have to participate in most races.

If we exclude the Open/Elite classes (where paddlers will generally congregate to one class to race each other), there were:
- 35 age group paddlers in the 12'6" class and
- 36 in the 14'+ class.
So split almost exactly down the middle!

This even split carried through the men's/women's categories too:
Men's 12'6 = 27
Men's 14' = 29
Women's 12'6 = 8
Women's 14' = 7

The Open/Elite classes are a bit different because:
1. When no board class is defined as a single 'elite' class, most of the paddlers will congregate to one class to race each other (sorry Rhino if you weren't to know what everyone else had decided to paddle).
2. Choice of board purchase/ownership is generally based on defined classes for racing (which is increasingly tending towards 12'6" due to ease of international/interstate travel) rather than choosing a board that you'll have the most fun on for what you want to do most (ie. some prefer paddling a 12'6" for everything, but even if you prefer ocean racing/downwinding a bigger board, you need to own a 12'6" to compete in BOP style races).
3. Not all open/elite paddlers have two boards, and with the popularity of BOP racing among these competitors (in QLD at least), pretty much everyone has a 12'6, but not everyone has a 14' (even if many of them have access to a 14' when it is the set class for a race). So 12'6" ends up as the 'default' elite class when its not defined.
4. Locally, pretty much all the elite competitors train day in day out on 12'6" boards, its what they're used to using for crossing over in all conditions, so its what they'll choose to race most of the time.

For anyone waiting for the results... They will be posted in conjunction with a complete race wrap-up (by race director Peasey) over the next day or so.

Just want to say a MASSIVE thanks to Peasey for all his efforts in pulling together another fantastic race!

On the day, it might look like the girls/guys helping with rego and the BBQ etc. are doing a lot, and they deserve plenty of thanks too and shouldn't be forgotten! And many of you have thanked me for all the timing work on the day - which doesn't go unappreciated!

BUT behind the scenes, in the lead up to the race Peasey has worked tirelessly, and almost singlehandedly, to drum up sponsorship and prizes, organise the medals and organise the online registration system. Not to mention liaising with Council and Maritime safety to obtain the relevant permits, and face the challenge of the original permit for the same course as last year being revoked due to and unfortunate incident at the Alley a couple of weeks ago (which had nothing to do with the race or SUP's at all). Let alone a third change to the course to adapt to weather conditions on the day.

All his time & effort is for the good of the sport and to push growth and encourage a friendly competitive environment for everyone to participate in. There is little reward for the work he puts in (except for that satisfaction of running another successful event) and all on top of working a full time job like most of the rest of us!

So CONGRATULATIONS Peasey for another successful event and THANKYOU again for all you efforts!
