AA, I have seen some injuries in my life but that one takes the cake.
That picture from the operating theatre is "GHASTLY".
I feel like throwing up everytime I look at it.
Hope you get well soon and recover 100%.
Cheers. ET.

Jeez AA, that last pic is full on. I got to see the pics Parko took on his phone of his attempt at removing his heel and this is certainly in the same ball park. OUCH.

Hope you are well on the way to mending... I have to admit I was the winner of your shoulder mis fourtune a few years back (I borrowed your board for a downwinder or two), but feel for ya with the run of luck.

catch ya at Merimbula.

When they had that flap up you should of asked for a permanant leg rope to be attached.
Remember years ago a friend did nearly the same thing by landing on the fin of his sailboard during a bad landing. The flap that was peeled back on your leg in theartre looked like his leg on the beach!, very nasty but heeled up well.
Better rest up mate, and thanks for the pics

Definitely not dinnertime viewing but it is a timely reminder that no matter how experienced we think we are mother nature and our equipment can turn on us.

This is the result of tangle with the 9' fin of my 12'6 in 1-2' surf.
Got rolled, I bail, board jack knifes, 10' slash. Ouch!

Fortunately I was close to Steyne Surf Club and the local crew got met out of the water into an Ambo and off to hospital. Thanks boys!
Over 100 stitches later I am left wondering HTF did I get caught out in such obscure conditions?

We invented Pro Teck fins, fiberglass fins with a flexible urethane edge, that greatly reduce fins cuts. Flexible trailing edges also improve board performance by allowing water to flow off the fin smoother and faster.
We have a Super Flex fin, with a flexible core that bends, making it the safest fin in the world for children, beginners, and surf schools. This Super Flex fin is also used on rescue boards and flat/shallow water SUP because it bends and does not break when struck against rocks and reef.
I invented the Pro Teck fins after our son got a severe fin cut to his inner thigh that required over 200 stiches.
We developed Nose and Tail Guards to protect surfers from injuries when hit by the nose and tail of fiberglass boards. They also protect the board from dings with out affecting performance.
Our theme is "Suf Smart" use Nose Guards and Pro Teck fins.
SurfCo products are available in surf shops and distributed in Australia by Surf Technicians. www.surftechaustralia.com www.surfcohawaii.com

Hey AA hope you have a speedy recovery!

I copped a fin chop to my foot a while back by the exact same shaped fin. It just punctured my foot with ease. Have to agree with sanding down that edge. It's just sometimes the small things we miss

Thanks Guys! The Seabreeze community has been one of the more uplifting parts of my recovery!

Going back to Merimbula where it all started back in 2008 and sharing a few with the crew is one thing I have to look forward to! Wouldn't miss it for the world!

Hmmm wonder how I would go in the Skate SUP leg - getting pretty good on crutches!

I will look into the Flexi fins, SurfCo!

Adapt, I reckon we have all had our close calls and serious cuts but that fin is dangerous! Apprantley the head honchos at Future Fins in the US have seen the pics and offered me a new set of fins. Generosity

Yeah it wasn't a pleasure Rod! From what I have seen I will have to tie your ankles together to have any chance anyway.

Thanks guys - appreciate the good wished so much!!

Put it this way Phil I ain't going nowhere next week! Swing by!

Looking back I wish I had done a few things differently - played the shark attack card with the locals, pushed a bit harder to get my moneys worth by putting the siren on as we drove past the shop and of course ask for a permanant leg rope to be attached at the stitch up! Oh well! Always easy to remember in hindsight.

Here's to sand paper, Flexi fins and Endone!

that is why i've just bought this 9" flexible and soft edged fin to experiment with. i've only tried it in tiny waves once but they were similar to the ones when the gash happened, and the board sizes were similar. the fin seemed to work fine and as soon as this crap adelaide change passes through i'll be testing it a lot more

Hi Andrew,I also wish you a speedy and full recovery...I can't help wondering though did the doctor or the nurse give you any strange looks when you started taking photos?

Thanks mate! Classic was they were ALL taking photo's! Doctors, Nurses they all took pics.
I guess it saves the specialists coming down! I just handed them my phone.

They texted me this one. Lying onthe Op table, out to the world just before they stitched me up.

I am one lucky guy! No permanent damage. It will all mend.

"All done, wow that was one hell of a gash"
"Nurse have you seen my watch?"
"No Doctor, but where is that ticking sound coming from?
