looking at the ISA website, it has Australia at the top of the points table, on maximum points. Are they sort of doing it backwards, ie counting down from maximum points available. To me it looks like a combination of having someone in each event and the maximum number of points able (ie a 1st and 2nd for 2 people events) to be scored. Some countries have 0 for an event, I figure they dont have a person in that event....
what is the relay? what craft, what distance, male, female etc?
I could be wrong, but I thought the relay was combined SUP & prone - 6 people in total - 2 guys and 1 girls on each, so for most countries, all their 'race' team will participate. The Aussie prone paddlers have set the foundation for a pretty solid team so far!
Not sure who will paddle for countries having different athletes racing in the technical & marathon courses?
I don't know the format of the relay either? Either Bop 'M' style or a single loop out through surf, paddle and back in for each athlete.
TEAM RELAY
1x guy + 1x girl from both SUP and Prone (so 4x in total per team). 400-1000m per relay leg.
The first SUP race of the event kicks off in 5 hours.

Heat draw:
Looks like the Aussies got a bad start but have made up heaps of ground and now 4th with a gap to the first three.. but catching.. Go, go, go!
Ooops wrong.. Now they are talking English and that's Travis in the lead and opening up a gap on everyone.. Woohoo!
DJ
Looks like they have a comedian out on the course entertaining the crowd .. .. Oops no.. That's a serious competitor .. Jeez.. Have these guys ever paddled before today?
DJ
Jacko and Jamie about to start in the second group.. This will be good..
They're off and racing.. Wow wot a start by Jamie.. and Jacko is now up onto second.. Awesome...
DJ
Wow drama.. Jacko catches a wave.. Almost takes Jamie out.. Jamie loses his board.. Jacko now leading and Jamie swimming for his board and now way back.. OMG.
Jamie now flying through the field and should finish 2nd.. Amazing
DJ
how fast was Mitchell in catching up?????? DJ, I agree the commentators lack some identification tools or cells......and camera keeps focusing on no 1 - we can see he is in the lead ffs - all the while the guys are taking each other out further back out of sight.....
But what a show - on the edge of our seats, boths Saffas through + our resident Italian, so all hands on deck for final!!!!
Speaking of South Africa - they're smashing it in Heat #1 of the Team Relay.
Each country has 2x SUPs (1 guy/1 girl) + 2x Prone Paddlers (1 guy/1 girl)
Heat #1: Chile, Brazil, Peru, South Africa
Heat #2: Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, USA, Spain
Australia leading comfortably over USA in Heat #2.
Spain in third, followed by Venezuela and Argentina.
Angie in action - moving so fast she's a blur.
Update: Australia just beat USA. Both move through to the Final.
Justin Holland/Joel Mason/Angie Jackson/Jordan Mercer raced the heat. Jamie Mitchell and Brad Gaul coming into the team for the Final.
Schedule's been delayed by an hour, so the SUP Finals will be on at a slightly more reasonable hour...

Ouch, big mistake from Jamie not crossing the line with his paddle. Well done Trav first, Jamie second, and Jacko third.
Team Relay FINAL is on!

The Aussie's are killing it... might be a few interesting exchanges at the after party from some other teams who were maybe expecting to do better.
Off their website:
