Just new to this room and loving the midlength discussion. First time poster also, so i apologise in advance for any misdoings.

Looking at getting a midlenght and after some thoughts please.

Im 54 and currently downsizing from 100kg, first goal 95 and stand 170cm. Been surfing since early teens (performance shortboards). Lost my mojo 10 years or so back and quit, but buying a flat water SUP eventually lead me down the path to SUP surfing for the last 5 years in pretty much the same conditions that I used to surf in, without the suckier reefs or crowded angry points for obvious reasons LOL.

Made the switch back to shortboards 6 months or so back, starting with a 6'6 CatchSurf quad foamie 55L, then picked up a 6'8 JS Raging Bull step up 45.7L and lastly a Machado Seaside Quad 6'1 46.5L. Have had some fun waves on them all but for my local beach and surrounds (Wanda, Garie the Gong down to Bawley) Im thinking that a midlength is going to round out my quiver.
I'm at home laying down drawn out cutties, low bottom turns and love to draw 8's all day if possible:) So looking for a mid that will get me there.

From what i have read here, I'm thinking around the 7'2-7'6 length, with some entry and exit V, (single to double concave?). Not too flat in the rocker for steeper hollower waves but not too much rocker for smaller beach days?
I have already invested in a couple of different keel quad fin sets, so thinking of maybe going with the 5 fin option, to play with quad or twin options. Most here seem to love the 2+1 setup, mmmm what to do?
Also keen on light to medium swallow tails, but don't mind a rounded pin either.

These are my thoughts on what might suit me best so far but open to suggestions please.

Can anyone recommend and surf shops, in the Illawarra region, that have a good selection of mid's?
Have been keeping an eye on here and Gumtree also. If anyone has seen or knows of anything similar to these available anywhere, please let me know also.

The two pics below are of boards that have REALLY caught my eye as lovely specimens of midlenghts.
I think that the top one is only a 3 fin setup though?

Thanks for the tip justaddwater, i'll stop by and check them out next time I'm in Gerringong.
They do a 7'2 22" 2 13/16" at 49.4L or a 7'4 22 1/2" 2 7/8" at 52.9L, I guess the 7'4 would be the go as an all rounder?
My Starboard SUP"s were carbon, light and bulletproof, well worth the $.

If you like the seaside you could always grab a seaside and beyond.
I've ridden the Tolhurst Moe in a 7'2" and found it didn't paddle too well in the flats or catch waves easily. Once on the wave it turned shorter than its length. Demo if possible before you buy.

Great suggestion Cuttlefish. The Seaside and Beyond 7'4 looks perfect! LOL, the 7'0 model is 45.3L compared to my Seaside at 6'1, 46.5L! The 7'4 comes in at 49.5L, that seems to make more sense to me for a mid length option? I've already got the fins for it also hahahaha.

56 years old. 84kg. Surf most days. Had the board a year and used it in waist to 1.5 overhead beach breaks. Quad futures. Fast, plenty of rocker and turns well. A very good option.

Full custom with resin tint can be up around $1500 I paid just over $1,000 so not too bad. First new board I've bought for years as I usually buy mint second hand or unwanted new.

Hi All,
Like others I'm back into surfing after 20 years out.

Tried picking up where I'd left off but at 54 and with a payload of 82kg it's a pipe dream. Reality bites hard.

Biggest issue is paddle speed and wave pickup. Tried for about 50 waves the other day and only got onto a couple. And you guessed it, late drop with old and slow reflex speed = wipeout.

The thing is that when I do manage to climb up it all gels again and I and hit hard bottom turns, re entry, cut back, and even pulled off a floater. Likely because I have been land locked and surfskating for year, but that doesn't fix busted up shoulders or age. So the frustration of age and wave count is killing me.

What I'm looking at is a funboard or minimal compromise. Have been hunting around and the dream is a 6'10" SubX. But the budget is a 6'10" Beau Young Carbon Jet.

Anyone got any other budget based solutions for me? Or recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

What were you riding that wasn't giving you the easy wave catching?
Sounds like you'd rather ride something more shortboardy than midlength (when they often surf more towards the longboard end of the surfing spectrum with extra trim and glide at the expense of in the pocket vertical)?
If this is correct I'd be looking at something like the zephyr over the carbon jet.

A longer Miller could be good for shortboard wave catching ease.

An Egan 5'11" 1978 single fin with too much rocker that sinks my middle. Had a bow wave that I couldn't paddle over no matter how hard I tried. Also a 6'2" late 90s thruster, not enough volume in it for my Fram and paddle power.

Not planning on ripping as much anymore. More a transition board toward a Mal but has a bit of the best of both worlds. So a good all round single quiver that has the fin combo flexibility to suit the conditions. As long as it gives me the paddle in and pickup time to get myself set then I'm all good.

Had a Crozier 7'2" Mini gun single back in the early 80s that absolutely shredded for the size it was. Wish I still had it because it would have been perfect for me now. Closest I can see to it is the carbon jet but it's 4" shorter.

Still the volume is up there and if in the right places it would fit my needs well.

As for a Miller, my dream board would be the SubX in around 6'10" to 7'. That ticks all the boxes. Been emailing Grant by he came close to loosing everything in the fires and seems naturally preoccupied with that.

Plus my funds don't stretch that far at the moment so I need to save my pennies and get what I can that will work in the interim.

Something in the high 30 to low 40 litres around 6'10 x 20 1/2 x 2 3/4 or thereabouts will give you good paddle speed and still surf well,Id just look for a decent second hand board around those dimensions until you know exactly what you want for your hard earned coin.Good Luck

Reckon this would make Hydromann happy. The wider tail would help with the stability and maintain the glide. Flat bottom to V bottom would give it a nice old skool feel.

Thanks Cuttlefish, Reminds me of an old G&S 6'4" single I had back in 81. If I was on the east coast I would have an abundance of seconds to choose from, unfortunately her in the west there seems to be a drought of decent seconds that fit my bill. The best I have come across was a 6'2" Miller SubX, but Grant recons it's too short for my needs. Still I'm very tempted.

Yeah deep down I know. Just presses all the right buttons for me. If I'm honest though its not just the board, I think the fin setup is awesome and would finish it off amazingly.

I know Ricardo is saying don't do it but fugg it. Jump on it and give it a go.
Worst you can do is it doesn't do what you thought it would but you've scratched an itch.
Put it back on gumtree and move it on. With the fins included it is a good deal. Alkali fins ain't cheap.
You could sell it in a heartbeat for $100 less than what it cost you.
Yep $100. So what! Questions will have been answered and you can head in a better direction from there.
It will help in so far as I reckon you wouldn't need more than a 6'6" in a sub x stock dimensions at your weight anyway so riding the 6'2" could be a real eye opener to what that amount of foam can achieve.

Hydromann,

Where do you live.
2 x 6'2 SubXs on Guntree at the moment. At that size would be cheap to ship to you if budget is an issue. Not sure though as you may think it's too small.

I'm in WA so one SubX is just down the road. Wish I knew the volume on the 6'2", not everything but a good indicator. Grant Miller keeps the records and thought it would be too low for me.

Really got me thinking on this, if I don't like it I can pass it on to one of my son's son ride shorter. Could also get the SubX and a 6'10" Carbon Jet for less than a custom.

Feeling very trigger happy ATM, very dangerous place ;-)

Another thought is I'm thinking with more consistent surfing that my paddle strength will improve and I'll shed some kgs.

When I get active the kgs fall off fairly quick so maybe I could grow into the 6'2"?

Now I'm just trying to justify the potential spend ;-)
