Byrne Surfboards from Wollongong where contracted years ago to make Larry Bertlemans boards also,I remember my mate bought a black one and I went with him to pick it up.Where the board is today who knows but my mate is no longer with us!...

Interesting fish outline that one, the body and tail look like a mini-simmons with a fish tail and angled nose...

Looks very functional for improving wave catching ability and glide... Similar to a fish outline that I sorta had in mind to shape myself where its more of a Mini-Simmons with a more dynamic tail for turning and barrel riding.

The location of the leash plug is pretty crazy though, that would would tombstone like a B#$@h.

I know Bertleman liked the fins set further forward so its pretty crazy to see just how far up, I reckon thats a good 5-10cms further forward than my fish...

Sorry about your buddy too

Thanks Andyroo, yeah mate it was a long time ago, this pic was just one that I found as a reference, off memory his was all black without the white stripe.I can't remember the fin positioning at the time though,to long ago,haha!...

Andyroo,At the time my mate had his Bertleman I bought a Louis Ferreira made by Sky Surfboards I think, must've been a push on Hawaiian riders boards back then but we liked them and they went great.I've heard recently Louis is not a popular man in Waikiki these days though

I'm pretty sure you told me Mac,last time you where in Hi you put up a story about Loius backing those big companies that are pushing for cheaper rentals of boards and or undercutting them in price, something which is and has been a local Hawaiian thing always!..
Maybe it wasn't you maybe I'm getting dementure

This is pretty interesting that even Dane found surfing a true displacement hull challenging as has been my experience... There was a Liddle DM on GT awhile back and I nearly pulled the trigger on it... glad I didn't.

I'm still keen and i'll probaby shape one down the track, my last one was 6' though so I think i'll go 7'6" x 22' x 3'ish next time round which is kinda that magic length for me.

What I guess I'd consider more of a "shortboard" approach to midlength riding. Both boards are displacement hulls too if I remember correctly.

Super interesting read SP

Makes real sense as to why Christensen/Lovelace use a displacement hull entry that transitions to a planing hull and why those boards generate so much natural speed...

Looking for help.
My 24 year old daughter wants to get a surfboard.
She thinks she wants a midlength.
She wants to cruise and carve rather than do radical maneuvers.
She is 171 cm tall and 60 kg.
She has surfed occasionally, but is far from expert.
Expert snowboarder, good balance.
Any suggestions as to where she should start looking, size and style wise?

Surely a man with quiver such as yours you have one Ok not into sharing

She thinks she wants a midlength? WHY has she been reading seabreeze

Start her out on a 7.2 7.4 with here snowboarding experience.
Fun type board more volume than she needs so she bags heaps of waves
If this works report back to me and I'll give it a go

Depends a lot on the waves too I reckon, if they are steeper or more slopey as many of the vic waves seem to be (you are in victoria right?) That will affect the outline and tail design...

I would have a chat with Corey Graham down there, hear really good things about his boards and his general knowledge, his boards look unreal.

Being that lightweight I would look at a fish too as they will give you the natural glide but maybe more manageable in terms of transport and they are easier to surf, just pop up and go whereas a mid will surf better moving back and forward on the board...

That does look real nice...

I reckon for that region you want a wider or thicker tail though to get you in early on the flatter faced waves, Maybe something like the Sun Fish around the 5'6" to 5'8" region or the Daze around the 6'6" to 7'0...

Main thing is to listen to what he suggests rather than what you think you want. Tell the shaper how you want to surf and what sort of waves and let them complete the puzzle

Some new shapes on hi site too, looking really good...

There was a CG Fish for sale down here and I so nearly bought it, was just a bit small for me though...

I'd get her a 7ft ish foamy. Unless she can already get up and turn she is better buying something to learn on and not worry what looks cool. A Nsp like minimal around the same length is a good alternative.

Sure in 6 - 12 months and she'll be ready to get something else but the foamy will help her progress as they are built for it. Long fish or Mids aren't really learners boards. Flat rockers etc aren't great for learning on.

Thanks. I have an NSP (I think) soft top we get when she was about 15. Not sure of the length.
I'm going to retirieve it from the rafters of the garage to get her started again.
