Great post, RG, good to see a craftsman at work. And the little tips a long the way are great, me and a mate had a shot when we we're younger, it was a horror show, never even got glassed.

This is a great thread. Stoked to see someone sharing their craft.

I've been hanging out in shaping bays since I was 11, used to clean them out for $2.50 with a broom, brush and spade.

I love these dusty little rooms

I vividly recall using a surform on a blank many years ago and suffering the indignity of having it topple over sideways as I held it in the centre with just one hand.

This of course left a gash in the foam that a middle aged Columbian street Ho would be proud to call her own.

Thus ended any hopes I may have harbored of a being any sort of craftsman.

I notice you hold it very carefully with 2 hands and possible even drag it towards you rather than push it away from you.

very observant obct yeah the bastards bite...pulling them back is some thing that stops that roll over and I allso stick some masking tape along the body to grip better.

Yeah, I would have cleaned them for free.

Actually had a fight over who got to cut out decals at one particularly respected shaper.

Had to ride home past 5 board factories and hung out in them everyday, willing free slave labour. What happened to groms hanging out in factories??

Waterfront Surfboards in Napier, NZ used to have me hanging round like a bad smell for a while as well. The boys were always fun and used to educate us on the finer things in life

ok back on track with this thread - maybe for once we can keep a thread on its intended course

I am loving this thread and really appreciate the time and effort that RG has put into it so we can all see a master-craftsman at work making a board for one of our own.

Ron a question from one who has at the most patched some dings and cracks in boards and done a pretty crap job at that .

Love the bottom curve in that board . How have you shaped it ? Does the blank come with curve in it or have you done that with your shaping ?

Wanted a slightly more HP version first up mate so I'm getting an Islander 903 - with a fat 22 1/2" x 2 3/4" rounded pin . still talking to Ron about fin setup for this girl but I'm also getting one of those beautiful fins that he has his mate make up like Taz did - the rocker lifts are healthy from the pics I've seen and thats what i wanted ... for up 6 foot reef at home
Important for all Goddard buyers to know that Ronnie's sticks are all pretty much HP by his design , that traditional Log he posted up last week is a bit different however so you have to keep this in mind.

Edit : The other reasons are Goddard Tints are stunning and draw you in , 100% Hand shaping in Australia is priceless and must be supported by us , and Ronnie will always take the time to help anyone - pretty simple choice for mine.

I have been looking around for a board for a while with a bit more rocker then the 9 foot Mal I now have . Bought my 1 st Mal about 3 mths ago and since then have only used the short board once so really enjoying it . But have had a few issues with lack of nose rocker producing some great nose dives . Would have looked great on the contour might have won a few bucks on funniest home videos .

Ron supplied my new fin and the deal was so easy I had to go with him for the new board .

Had a real tough choice between 3 of Rons boards the Nimbus , Thunder , Islander . The Islander is a HP board aimed at larger surf , the Thunder is a speed machine aimed at beach breaks , the Nimbus is similar to the Islander but aimed at slightly smaller surf . Loved the Thunder but went with the Nimbus . Ron says his mates keep pinching his and he cant get them back so must be good .
have gone 9 foot same as the old board , but will be slightly thicker allowing for the fact I spend most of my life in a wetsuit of some sort .
Have gone with a thruster setup as basically I am too far away to be changing things so have stuck with what I know .
Colour gold and brown ( hawks colours ) should look great

good evening thrill seekers sorry I'm late......time to start shaping the rails now...I like to throw down some guide lines...cup your hand making a shape of a rail that you would like...measure roughly how thick it is about an inch in from what would be the edge of that rail and thats how much your first guide line should be,,,the ones around the nose and tail are roughly half and half again to complete three guide lines,

cut the first rail band from the deck until it roughly touches your first guide line,

I then cut my chine in If no chine I will throw down a narrower cut starting off the bottom rail cuts

you can see the lines working in this shot...I need to take off a little more on the right side to even it up....this method corrects itself...most all shaping has been self taught for me...if I can pass anything at all on, its these simple guide lines they have served me well...changing the widths will determine your rail shape so you really dont have to strain to see mistakes....remember it has to be a symetrical sculpture

same from the nose...needs a little tweek to get it even both sides

the rail is starting to form now, and it has been all flats and shadows...dont forget the shadows from here I just keep taking them off... long smooth lines, a few from the top then a few from the bottom being carefull not to pinch the edge...the last few strokes should be allmost vertical so as you end up with a nice round edge.

so not much to go now...biggest hint I can give here is dont rush and have lots of breaks...if you didnt do anymore than one of these posts at a time before you had a break you will end up with a good shape...after every break I guarantee you will come back to your board and say oh! I didnt see that bump before....oh and on your break refrain from drinking beer...then I guarantee you will come back and say wtf....so I'm finished for the day and a cold beer is on my mind.
