I'd still say he is more likely to be in a position than most to comment on sharks

The same could be said if someone like me was to say i know more about board shaping than Katana, or maybe that i have a bit more knowledge on boats and the retails side of the trailer boat industry than others. We all have our areas of knowledge is my point and we all need to consider that sometimes

Surely everyone's allowed their opinion at least.

Totally agree and that's why i always say IMO But there's also a opportunity to learn to if you wanted to, or at least to try and see it from another angle maybe.

I have never slammed anyone for saying they want to cull sharks. But it just seems defending sharks seems to get you slammed

I reckon the whole lack of food rant over this attack at Red Bluff is b#llsh!t.

IMO if anything, a shark up there would attack due to overstimulation from food be it tuna/mackies or whatever feeding on schools of bait and baitballs and getting super keen and in the mood to bite.

The marine life in and around that area is amazing.

One post about fish stocks at Bluff is not exactly a "Rant" but i agree your comment regarding fish and shark over stimulation is a theory as well. But if that is the case, would the fact that there has been no attacks for so long up there, now make this attack just pure unlucky?

Are there more people in the water in that area these days

Cool

Not making light of this guys attack, i still call it extremely unlucky. As i said i hope he recovers all fine. It would seem that no one actually saw the attack or the shark according to the reports. Will be interesting to see what they say of teh bite marks

Read on one of the news sights just before and 'apparantly' a few people have come forward who saw it and said it was "a brutal attack" with the shark coming back for more with the poor dude fighting it off.
Not that witnessing any attack wouldn't be extremely brutal.
I just don't really trust the media anymore or ever have for that matter.

Incredible effort by him and all parties involved.

At a guess I'd say either bronzie or tiger but really who knows...

Spot on. Funny thing is though, I've never once claimed to know everything about sharks, just said that I study them, have been involved in their research and tagging and have been in the water with them quite a bit. I've been face to face with White Sharks on several occasions and had the privilege of watching them go about their business.

From the study and experience, both through university and outside it, I believe I've put myself into a position to be able to make statements about sharks that have a fairly firm grounding in factual evidence. I don't think I've once stated something about sharks that isn't supported by a peer-reviewed paper...and when I have said something that is still a hypothesis and not a theory, I have mentioned so.

On the other hand, there are more than a handful of people here who haven't the slightest clue about the marine world, let alone sharks, yet they're often the ones ranting the most. Unfortunately for them, watching Shark Week on Fox and watching the news coverage about 'serial killers on our beaches' doesn't make them the least bit informed. Sure, I get short with people on the topic from time to time, yet that is no more a crime than some of the ignorant comments people spout as fact.

At the end of the day, regarding this incident, a man went into waters that everyone knows is absolutely swarming with sharks. He got bitten. He's recovery. From everything we've heard it wasn't even all that bad...in comparison to recent attacks. To be frank, I'm surprised people don't get chomped up that way on a weekly basis. With the amount of sharks up there, more people in the water and 5hitloads of game fish smashing bait balls, often right next to the line up, well, do the maths.

I have 2 problems with your response suba;
"From the study and experience" get over yourself scrumpy I too have been to uni, and only after 15 years of post grad experience do I realise how little I knew when I was an undergrad. If you are anything like the undergrads we get at work you too will be a little wet under the ears.
"Sure, I get short with people on the topic from time to time, yet that is no more a crime than some of the ignorant comments people spout as fact."
The reason people have a problem with you is exactly that. You think everyone else is ignorant and that your the only one qualified to have an opinion. Once you get out of nappies, grow up and have a family of your own your opinion might change.
My suggestion is to move to indo so you can annoy the indos directly in indonean, after all you are fluent in it.

To my memory it was last year, can't remember which thread since it was a while ago now. "sharks are like puppy dogs of the ocean, they don't have hands so bite things to see what they are" maybe not exact but pretty close. feel free anyone to find it.

Suba not having a dig but at the start of this thread you were putting the attack down to
"less and less fish"

but then in your more recent comment you said

"with the amount of sharks up there, more people in the water and 5HITLOADS of game fish smashing baitballs often right next to the lineup"

I'm just wondering if you honestly think the attack up north is due to less fish?

I really do think that this attack is not relevant to the whole debate, with due respect to the bloke lying in RPH with some nasty injuries it was and is a place that is well populated with sharks. I've been going there for twenty five years and always wonder at the abundance of marine diversity and how we seemingly haven't screwed it up considering the commercial and recreational fishery impact factor. Good management and research has appeared to have worked, with the odd spot/species overfished. As for sharks it's clearly the GWS that is the bad guy here and the one that must be addressed, it is possible that it could be in the area but without a confirmed ID it might as well be Loyd Rayney. I'm more concerned with the lack of Govt action over the last month or so, seems that they need a tragedy for it to be back on the agenda, when's the next state election?

also sorry to jb, have given you some greens though to in the past,

the annoying thing also is that i can't find any fault in what the two last attackees were doing. any reasonable person would say the nw is safe due to unlimited meal options for sharks
