fair call i've prob been negative just find it hard to abide know it alls and claimers, woody and bakesy have had some good comments though. will endeavour not to defame others in future but please calm down the claims

also sorry to jb, have given you some greens though to in the past,

the annoying thing also is that i can't find any fault in what the two last attackees were doing. any reasonable person would say the nw is safe due to unlimited meal options for sharks

soleman as far as the gw is concerned the sw-perth-rto is just a short jog

no doubt rbl but why do peeps always have to say i surf down south alot? who cares? sameFreakin ocean.

If you want to debate me then try using something with substance.

The comment you are referring to was me saying that sharks have the same trait as puppies (and human babies) in that they explore things using their mouth/teeth. The shark has sensitive nerve endings in their teeth similar to our fingers. I never said they were the puppy dog of the sea. If I were to say that sharks, like dogs, have a great sense of smell does that mean I am also calling them the puppies of the sea? Or the fact that both animals have hearts? No.

Like I said, if you wanna argue the topic then fine. Just try a little harder next time.

Anyhoo, beastsurf you asked what my solution would be. I don't have one. That's what millions and millions of dollars has been set aside to look for. But I do have a 99.99% effective way of avoiding shark attacks. That is to stay out of the water if the risk isn't within your acceptable levels. I have my theories on why we are seeing the attacks that we're seeing and I'm pretty sure I've brought it up plenty of times on SB so I wont bother again. As a side note, we may suddenly see a sudden drop in the number of attacks/fatalities and years form now look back on the 2011/2012 years as a statistical anomaly. Time will tell.

People that think culling is the best solution just are not looking at all the angles and are not looking into the future, in my opinion. Killing something because you don't understand it leads no where. Like I've said before, if the risk is too much for you then don't go in. The more people that pus out of surfing the better

I really do think that this attack is not relevant to the whole debate,

As for sharks it's clearly the GWS that is the bad guy here and the one that must be addressed, it is possible that it could be in the area but without a confirmed ID it might as well be Loyd Rayney.

Agree 100%
Up North is a whole different playing field compared to metro and surrounds.

Why do you think the GWS is responsible Bakesy?

well Woodo, just a theory but it seems that one was hanging around Kalbarri for a long time at the end of summer this year which means they are up there and close to shore. Very rare for that area according to a few locals I know, so my theory is that for an attack to occur at the Bluff it must be either a tiger that's made a mistake and then another one (Suba's doggie theory or SPDT as I call it) as it came back for more. This is GWS predatory behaviour (thanks Shark Week!), I'm still pretty sure it's a tiger or reefie just being a shark but holy **** I've seen so many just cruising the channel and chasing your trout you've just hooked but never heard of the GWS up there. It seems that this is the season for statistical rarities so I'll have a bet that when the guy can tell us it may be whitey to blame, also rare for him to be able to tell us but a few have been able to over the years, one diver off Meelup a few years back and a dude down Walpole way.

Great Whites frequent the North West, including Ningaloo reef. so they are up there. That's a key migratory point for the ones that travel between Australia and Africa.

Still think it's most likely down to an over eager bronzie or maybe a Tiger. If it's a tiger then the bite marks will show it clearly as they have quite a distinct bite pattern compared to the other sharks in the region . We've all seen what their teeth look like and being bitten by one of them is not pretty.

can't blame them either, I like to migrate that way myself, unfortunately it's a rarity these days. If you tagged me you'd find an established pattern of movement and have an accurate understanding of my behaviour and prey items These have changed over the last two decades as I have a favoured breeding ground with an abundant food source that has not declined.

The sad part is everyone is about stopping shark attacks as a few people are getting hurt/killed. Yet last nights 7 news really said nothing new other than to mention the guy who rescued the surfer. (huge hats of to him and i do believe he deserves the credit due), then the next story was about Llyod Raney maybe killing his wife and some garbled voice message. the third story was about a Asylum boat that has was in distress with 120 people on board.

So the priority of news is nothing new about a person injured participating in sport.

Old news about a marital dispute.

120 people lives at risk or at least in imminent danger
Today they are finding survivors in the ocean. [}:)]

Maybe tomorrow's news should be why the media beat up such sh-t all the time

it's a double edged sword JB the old media mantra is "if it bleeds it leads" followed by proximity to the media outlet, e.g. local goes before national. However, it can also be seen as a positive. If the media continue to run it in a sensational way (using GWS images like perthnow and The West) it will lead to skepticism and ultimately understanding that this issue is being sensationalised, fooling people some of the time is easy, but all of the time is hard (known as a saturation point) So hang in there as we haven't reached that point as far as I can see, the culling lobby is gathering momentum....

Bakesy they ran a poll on the seven fb page and the supporting a cull was less than 30% of total vote. So they didn't run the results as promised[}:)]

I just believe if people really supported a cull then they should use the demographic right and push and promote it as much as they can. Not just for two days after an attack

I don't think we will see much change in our life time. Our kids though will be left to deal with what we do today

Who really cares about and could be bothered to vote in a MEDIA poll....

I think you'd find people that support culling the GWS always have and will continue to support it. Not just for 2 days after an attack. That is just stoopid even thinking that.

The tide is turning JB. I know PLENTY of people who were dead against killing a white a year or so ago that have changed their tune.
It's only a matter of time.
Watch this space.

From my perspective I've never met a single person that has been in support of culling sharks. Not a single one, not even from conversations with random people.

Not saying your wrong woodo but we're both seeing very different public attitudes here.

Well you're more likely to die driving up to bluff. Between the grey nomads, stray animals and road trains, sharks are the last thing that would stop me going up there.

You would, infact, be safe in the water anywhere. Not even the biggest sharks could stomach your oversized ego.

Thing is suba is right, the sharks up there are very well fed.

This is a forum, everyone is entitled to a opinion and some are obviously more qualified to comment on certain topics then others (ie Suba is in marine research industry) but why is that the pro cullers out there attack the people who have a different opinion to there's Play the ball not the man is the saying.

Another shark attack. Are you serous, sadly my opinion is it is only going to get worse. IMHO much worse. Less food around and more people in the ocean it has to happen. Everyone is saying they thought up north was one of the safest areas around. Why because of the supply of food they had. Now i hear from people returning from up north fishing trips and many complain about the poor fishing. To many smaller sharks around competing for everything they caught, or worse just catching nothing. Next thing we have a attack. I can see the link

We need to stop impacting on the ocean by stripping it bare.

Red thumb away

Mate we've always been competing with the sharks up there. We used to get spaniards chomped in half on a regular basis when trolling up around Gnaraloo and im talking 17 yrs ago when i first went there.
