Okay so the lack of surf (for me) has me looking at boards again..

The last few times I've been in the drink its been with my kids on very small days. I have my board in tow, and even pulled out my 6'6" fish but to no real advantage.

SO my question is Sweet Potato

Good bad and will it work on days when its super small?

I have seen demos but i struggle with time to do that. Will probably buy and if don't like it sell it.

Im 90 kilos or just under, 5'8" ish and intermediate surfer at best

Any size suggestions? And to help save my marriage any second hand around

Well depends on where you surf, here's my 2 cents

Location: Tiger Beach aka Scarbs/Trigg

Board: Star Foamy 7'0" $250 - 5% if VIP member

Reason: Help the misus get waves.

I (82kg - average surfer) have spent the summer surfing this, for small waves I can catch them far quicker than with my 6'6". Even manage a few floaters and even got barrelled one day. Sure you get that learner look when paddling out, but once you get a few that changes.

It doesn't turn that well, but what are you going to do a 1 to 2 foot close out.

Still I'm out there get waves and having fun, plus its good learning on for the kids. Would love to try it out in head high :)

Check the FireWire web site, it has a volume calculator and all the boards have their volume to size listed.

I've been surfing a few mellow point breaks with my dad lately.. been riding my minimal since non of my go-to boards can paddle me into those type of waves let alone have enough drive to get over the flat spots.

ive been looking into either a Rake Magic Peanut

rakefoamshapes.com/index.php?/surfboards/magic-peanut-/

or a Creative army Taco

http://www.creativearmy.com.au/shortboards.html

Both are mini simmons inspired boards set up as quads.. even at 5'4 (around 34 litres) they still have a lot more volume than my current boards. from a few people ive spoken to they are a hell of a lot of fun in small surf

PS: love the new website Dave.. is the Scud that quad you were talking to me about last year? I still want one!! (and my birthday IS coming around!)

Thanks Prawnhead - I think that is a much more accurate statement than Mac's!! He has not even met you yet.......I think he must be drinking those rumbo's again

As for the SP - well I love mine - put some new fins on it recently and love it even more. I have sent you a PM back JB.

Katana - I have had a look at the details re your skud and it looks like a ripper of a board - but I would have thought that given what you have written about it and its general shape that its not really a like for like comparison with an SP. From what I have found with the SP its great from 1 to 3ft, 4ft is pushing it big time. Its works well in gutless / shapeless waves - the large amount of surface area around the tail is the reason I think. JB could easily ride a 5'8" which is significantly diff to a 6'4" in both length and shape. Your skud looks like it would have a much broader wave range and would be the type of board I would use as an all-rounder as opposed to a dedicated board for those small crap days where a short fat assed floaty board can bring you much joy. Happy to be wrong!!!

What fins did you chuck on Ted? I had a chat with some bloke in the water last week who had a pair of the Rasta Twin Keels on his SP and he swore by them in the small stuff.

Honestly it's got me fked what fins you've got in the 1ft surf would matter, it's volume you want. IMO.

Ted Ive not got the reply? Was really looking forward to it

I guess this board is really for absolute small stuff. Often clean but super small, like a foot to foot and a half...And before anyone says why bother with that? Well occasionally with the kids a reasonable set rolls in and my kids are wanting to surf more and more so i guess I've got to get used to there conditions a little more

Fins make a big difference no matter what size it is (within reason). You want something to grip in & get you racing across the face as fast as possible to make sections or get some speed up for a big cutty. Of course if you just want to do spins or slide out then I guess you don't need em lol

JB I've been looking at the Potatonator, its a cross between the Dominator & SP. It handles sucky sections a lot better & you can surf it in bigger waves than the SP. Maybe Dave could do something like that...Havn't seen any second handy's around ...if you just want to shell out a few bucks for some summer fun, I'd have to agree with photosbykarlo about the Foamies. They go pretty good on small summer beachies, the local kids have been having a great time on them

How about a mini-mal? Get you gliding, or ripping if you're up to it, and the missus can get in on the action too.

Both my kids ride foam boards. I really don't want anything like that guess although i could then use it in the swimming area. I don't want a long board as they tend to be different than what i'm used to. I thought the SUP would be good to surf but in a small beach break they don't really work. Plus between pushing a little they are simply too dangerous. (i haven't ever taken A SUP out when my kids are around me). That and they way a frekken tone

I do still like the idea of short too, as with a Prado i then get room in the back a little easier with my kids board too Honestly i just want to surf and can't at ATM as there is no f--king surf... Disclosure= in my area and when I'm not working[}:)]

Yeah Thommo, I watched a vid of it on YT very cool...sorry so I guess your saying number of fins are not important then...volume is the main thing, yeah true that

can't think of a board easier to get used to in small waves though. I've pretty much been riding one all summer mate & surfing at least 4 days a week (until this week). Feels very weird jumping back on my 6'0 Firewire, but then it would probably feel weirder after getting farkall waves.

Lots of foam..i don't care how many fins or what sort you've got you still have to catch the wave first. (1ft)

The fins I were running were way to loose causing me all sorts of problems when it got a touch bigger or just putting too much into your turns...with the big wide arse it does not take much to let go.

I was running these ones

I am now enjoying these ones - lots more drive and hold. Nice and stiff.

^^ Stiff fins in small surf work well, great for a bit extra drive.
