Okay so the lack of surf (for me) has me looking at boards again..
The last few times I've been in the drink its been with my kids on very small days. I have my board in tow, and even pulled out my 6'6" fish but to no real advantage.
SO my question is Sweet Potato
Good bad and will it work on days when its super small?
I have seen demos but i struggle with time to do that. Will probably buy and if don't like it sell it.
Im 90 kilos or just under, 5'8" ish and intermediate surfer at best
Any size suggestions? And to help save my marriage any second hand around
Well depends on where you surf, here's my 2 cents
Location: Tiger Beach aka Scarbs/Trigg
Board: Star Foamy 7'0" $250 - 5% if VIP member
Reason: Help the misus get waves.
I (82kg - average surfer) have spent the summer surfing this, for small waves I can catch them far quicker than with my 6'6". Even manage a few floaters and even got barrelled one day. Sure you get that learner look when paddling out, but once you get a few that changes.
It doesn't turn that well, but what are you going to do a 1 to 2 foot close out.
Still I'm out there get waves and having fun, plus its good learning on for the kids. Would love to try it out in head high :)
Check the FireWire web site, it has a volume calculator and all the boards have their volume to size listed.
hey JB check out the skud on the website katanasurf.com i did some mods to the SP and thats what we came up with ,i had a demo but some one wouldnt give it back your welcome to try mine
I've been surfing a few mellow point breaks with my dad lately.. been riding my minimal since non of my go-to boards can paddle me into those type of waves let alone have enough drive to get over the flat spots.
ive been looking into either a Rake Magic Peanut
rakefoamshapes.com/index.php?/surfboards/magic-peanut-/
or a Creative army Tacohttp://www.creativearmy.com.au/shortboards.html
Both are mini simmons inspired boards set up as quads.. even at 5'4 (around 34 litres) they still have a lot more volume than my current boards. from a few people ive spoken to they are a hell of a lot of fun in small surf
PS: love the new website Dave.. is the Scud that quad you were talking to me about last year? I still want one!! (and my birthday IS coming around!)
Ask Ted in the longboard room about your weight he has one and let me tell you,by far the best surfer in this forum by a long shot.
As for the SP - well I love mine - put some new fins on it recently and love it even more. I have sent you a PM back JB.
What fins did you chuck on Ted? I had a chat with some bloke in the water last week who had a pair of the Rasta Twin Keels on his SP and he swore by them in the small stuff.
Honestly it's got me fked what fins you've got in the 1ft surf would matter, it's volume you want. IMO.
Ted Ive not got the reply? Was really looking forward to it
I guess this board is really for absolute small stuff. Often clean but super small, like a foot to foot and a half...And before anyone says why bother with that? Well occasionally with the kids a reasonable set rolls in and my kids are wanting to surf more and more so i guess I've got to get used to there conditions a little more
Fins make a big difference no matter what size it is (within reason). You want something to grip in & get you racing across the face as fast as possible to make sections or get some speed up for a big cutty. Of course if you just want to do spins or slide out then I guess you don't need em lol
JB I've been looking at the Potatonator, its a cross between the Dominator & SP. It handles sucky sections a lot better & you can surf it in bigger waves than the SP. Maybe Dave could do something like that...Havn't seen any second handy's around ...if you just want to shell out a few bucks for some summer fun, I'd have to agree with photosbykarlo about the Foamies. They go pretty good on small summer beachies, the local kids have been having a great time on them
How about a mini-mal? Get you gliding, or ripping if you're up to it, and the missus can get in on the action too.
Yeah Thommo, I watched a vid of it on YT very cool...sorry so I guess your saying number of fins are not important then...volume is the main thing, yeah true that

Lots of foam..i don't care how many fins or what sort you've got you still have to catch the wave first. (1ft)
